For most U.S. households, Netflix Standard is the best overall choice. It costs $19.99 per month before tax and provides ad-free 1080p streaming, two simultaneous devices, and downloads on two supported devices. Choose Premium at $26.99 when you will actually use 4K/HDR, need three or four simultaneous streams, want downloads on up to six devices, value Netflix spatial audio, or need up to two eligible extra-member slots. Choose Standard with ads at $8.99 when keeping the monthly bill as low as possible matters more than uninterrupted viewing and complete catalog access.

The short answer: which plan should you get?
- Choose Standard with ads if you want the cheapest way to watch Netflix and can accept commercial breaks, a smaller selection of available titles, and no extra-member option.
- Choose Standard if you want the best balance of price and experience: ad-free 1080p viewing for one or two people, with downloads on two supported devices.
- Choose Premium if your household regularly watches on three or four devices at once, has a complete 4K/HDR-capable setup, downloads on several devices, uses compatible immersive audio equipment, or needs eligible extra-member capacity.
- Check a bundle first if you already pay for, or are actively considering, a qualifying U.S. wireless or broadband package that includes Netflix. Compare the provider’s total price rather than assuming the Netflix portion makes the bundle cheaper.
Standard: the best default for most households
Standard is the sensible choice for viewers who want Netflix without advertising but do not need Premium’s additional capacity or quality features. Its 1080p Full HD resolution is suitable for laptops, tablets, phones, and many ordinary television setups. It also supports two simultaneous devices, so one person can watch while another uses the account elsewhere in the household.
The plan permits downloads on two supported devices. That is enough for a person with a phone and tablet, or for a couple who occasionally saves films and series for a journey. Supported download categories include Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPad, and Google Chromebook devices, although individual titles, operating systems, and device support can vary.
Standard does not include 4K/HDR or Netflix spatial audio. That limitation matters if you regularly watch documentaries, films, or series on a large compatible 4K television and care about the best available picture. It does not matter merely because the television has a 4K label: the title, network, streaming device, receiver, ports, and cable must also support the desired format.
Premium: when the extra $7 is worthwhile
Premium costs $26.99 per month, or $7 more than Standard at the listed U.S. prices. It adds:
Recommended Free Tools
- 4K Ultra HD and HDR for supported titles and equipment;
- four simultaneous devices instead of two;
- downloads on up to six supported devices;
- Netflix spatial audio; and
- the possibility of up to two eligible extra-member slots, where supported.
Premium is most defensible when several of these benefits apply at the same time. For example, a family that watches different programs simultaneously on three televisions or devices gets a practical capacity benefit. A viewer with a properly configured 4K/HDR home cinema may also see a meaningful improvement in supported films and documentary titles. A household with several travelers may value six download devices, although downloads alone usually do not justify the upgrade for someone who saves content only on one phone and one tablet.
Premium is not automatically the right plan for every owner of a 4K television. Netflix’s highest quality depends on the entire playback chain, and a weakness anywhere in that chain can reduce the result to the highest format that the equipment supports.

Standard with ads: the cheapest option, with real trade-offs
Standard with ads costs $8.99 per month and still provides 1080p Full HD, two simultaneous devices, and downloads on two supported devices. It is therefore not a low-resolution plan. Its main compromises are advertising and catalog availability.
Netflix describes the ad-supported experience as having a few short ads per hour, shown before and during selected shows and movies. The ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded. For a short episode, the interruption may be tolerable; for a feature-length film or a serious documentary, viewers who prefer an uninterrupted presentation may find the compromise more noticeable.

Netflix marks unavailable titles with a lock icon when users browse or search. Older devices may also be incompatible if their Netflix software cannot be updated.
Standard with ads cannot add extra members. It is best for price-sensitive viewers who accept interruptions and do not rely on every title in Netflix’s catalog. It is a poor fit if ad-free viewing, uninterrupted films, or sharing with an eligible person outside the household is important.
Is Premium’s 4K and HDR worth paying for?
It can be, but only if your viewing setup and the title support it. Premium gives the account access to 4K/HDR playback; it does not guarantee that every title will play in that format.
Check all five parts of the 4K/HDR chain
- The title: The film, series, or documentary must offer the relevant 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or other quality label.
- The plan: The account must be on Premium. Standard and Standard with ads top out at 1080p Full HD.
- The connection: The network must be fast and stable enough to sustain the target quality. A connection that frequently slows or fluctuates can still produce buffering or reduced quality.
- The playback devices: The television and any streaming stick, receiver, or other component in the signal path must support the format.
- The HDMI path: The relevant port and cable must support the required standard. Netflix identifies an HDCP 2.2-or-later-compatible HDMI port and Premium High Speed HDMI or Ultra High Speed HDMI cables as relevant to 4K/HDR setups.
If a television is connected through a streaming device and audio receiver, all three devices need to support the target 4K/HDR format. Otherwise, the picture may fall back to the best quality supported by the limiting component. Check your existing equipment before buying a new cable, streaming device, or receiver; upgrading hardware is not automatically necessary.

Simultaneous streams: the clearest reason to upgrade
Standard with ads and Standard allow two devices to watch at the same time. Premium allows four. This is separate from the number of devices that can be signed in to an account: the relevant question is how many people regularly watch concurrently.
Two people who occasionally watch at different times will not gain much from Premium’s stream allowance. A household in which three or four people frequently watch different programs at once may encounter interruptions or device limits on Standard, making Premium’s extra capacity more useful than its picture-quality upgrade.
Downloads: Standard is enough for many travelers
Both Standard plans allow downloads on two supported devices. Premium increases that limit to six. Downloads are useful for flights, journeys, unreliable connections, or travel where mobile data is expensive.
For one viewer downloading to a phone and tablet, Standard with ads or Standard already covers the stated device allowance. Premium becomes more persuasive when several household members download content for the same trip, or when the household also wants four simultaneous streams or 4K/HDR.

Extra members and household sharing
Netflix accounts are intended for people who live together in one household. Someone outside that household generally needs a separate account or must be added as an eligible extra member. This is not unrestricted account sharing.

In many countries, Standard and Premium account owners can add extra members, subject to country, billing, and package restrictions. Netflix’s listed U.S. figures provide one possible extra-member slot on Standard and up to two on Premium. The listed additional price is $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 per month without ads for each extra member, but eligibility and actual charges can depend on the package and region. Standard with ads does not offer extra-member slots.
Extra members must be activated in the same country where the account owner created the account, and some accounts billed by third parties or included in bundles are excluded. Check the current terms and price in the account before treating an extra-member slot as part of the value calculation.
Netflix spatial audio: a useful Premium bonus, not the main reason to upgrade
Netflix lists spatial audio as a Premium feature. It may improve the sense of immersion for viewers with compatible speakers, soundbars, receivers, headphones, and supported playback devices. The experience is not uniform across every title or setup, however.
Spatial audio is best treated as a supporting Premium benefit. For most households, the stronger reasons to upgrade remain four simultaneous streams, 4K/HDR on a compatible setup, additional download capacity, and eligible extra-member options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bundles, billing, and gift cards
Netflix normally bills monthly on the date the membership began, although dates can vary when a date does not occur in every month or when a third party handles billing. Taxes, plan changes, extra-member purchases, and provider packages can change the amount charged.
Netflix documents U.S. T-Mobile packages and add-ons that can provide Standard with ads, Standard, or Premium, depending on the package. If you are already considering a qualifying wireless or broadband plan, compare the complete monthly cost, required lines or services, taxes, promotional expiration dates, and eligibility rules. A Netflix bundle is not automatically cheaper simply because the Netflix service appears as a separate benefit.

Decision checklist
| Your situation | Best starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the lowest bill and can tolerate ads | Standard with ads | $8.99, 1080p, two streams, and two download devices, with commercial breaks and possible title exclusions. |
| One or two people want ad-free Netflix at 1080p | Standard | Ad-free viewing, two simultaneous devices, and two download devices without paying for unused Premium features. |
| Three or four people watch at the same time | Premium | Four simultaneous devices remove the main capacity limitation of the Standard plans. |
| You have a complete 4K/HDR setup and watch supported titles | Premium | It is the only listed plan with 4K Ultra HD and HDR. |
| You download on several household devices | Premium, if six-device capacity matters | Premium allows downloads on up to six supported devices rather than two. |
| You share with eligible people outside the household | Standard or Premium | Extra-member options may be available; Standard with ads does not support them. |
| You already have a qualifying provider bundle | Compare the bundle first | The total provider cost and eligibility determine the real value. |
Bottom line
Start with Standard unless you can identify a specific Premium feature you will use. Standard is the strongest all-purpose plan for ad-free 1080p viewing by one or two people. Move to Premium when your household needs four simultaneous streams, has the complete equipment chain for 4K/HDR, downloads on more than two devices, values spatial audio, or can use eligible extra-member capacity. Select Standard with ads only when the $8.99 price is the priority and you accept interruptions and possible title exclusions.
Before upgrading for picture quality, check the title, internet connection, television, streaming device, receiver, HDMI port, and cable. Before choosing a bundle, compare the provider’s entire bill. Those two checks prevent the most common ways of paying for Netflix features you cannot actually use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Netflix Standard or Premium better?
For most households, Standard is the best choice. It offers ad-free 1080p streaming, two simultaneous devices, and downloads on two supported devices for $19.99 per month before tax in the United States. Premium is better for households that need 4K/HDR, four simultaneous streams, six download devices, spatial audio, or eligible extra-member slots.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is Netflix Premium worth it for a 4K TV?
Premium is worth considering if the television, streaming device, receiver, HDMI port, cable, network, and title all support 4K/HDR. A 4K television alone does not guarantee that Netflix will stream in 4K.
Does Netflix Standard with ads have 1080p and downloads?
Yes. Standard with ads provides 1080p Full HD, two simultaneous devices, and downloads on two supported devices. It includes commercial breaks, and a small number of titles may be unavailable because of licensing restrictions.
Can Netflix Standard or Premium be used by someone outside my household?
Standard and Premium may offer extra-member slots in eligible countries and billing arrangements. Netflix’s listed U.S. figures provide one possible slot on Standard and up to two on Premium. Standard with ads does not offer extra members.
The Bottom Line
Best overall: Standard. Best for 4K, larger households, and heavier downloads: Premium. Best budget option: Standard with ads, provided you accept advertising and possible catalog exclusions.
