What happened to Freddie Freeman’s son Maximus?
In July and August 2024, Chelsea publicly shared that Maximus, then three years old, had suffered a serious medical emergency. His symptoms were initially described as transient synovitis, but his condition progressed to Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurological disorder in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves.
According to public accounts, Maximus deteriorated rapidly, developing full-body paralysis and requiring emergency hospital treatment. The Children’s Hospital of Orange County later reported that his care included ventilation and immunotherapy. He was subsequently expected to make a full recovery.

The Freemans’ $1 million donation to CHOC
In May 2025, Freddie and Chelsea announced a $1 million donation to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where Maximus received treatment. The gift followed the family’s experience with Guillain-Barré syndrome and became one of the most significant public charitable actions associated with Chelsea.
