Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) is not a documentary and it is not a remake of the 2005 movie scene for scene. It is an eight-episode Prime Video spy series about two strangers who are assigned new identities, a Manhattan home, and a marriage—then sent into dangerous missions that test whether their manufactured relationship can become genuine.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) is an eight-episode American scripted spy series on Prime Video. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine play two lonely strangers who accept new identities, move into a Manhattan brownstone, and are assigned to each other as both spouses and covert operatives. Their missions involve surveillance, travel, weapons, and lethal danger—but the series is equally interested in the harder assignment: learning how to trust someone when both partners are trained to lie.
All eight episodes of Season 1 premiered on February 2, 2024, and were released at once rather than weekly. You can watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Prime Video, subject to regional availability and the platform’s current membership or subscription terms.
What is Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) about?
John Smith and Jane Smith are not an established married couple hiding secret careers. They begin as strangers recruited by an enigmatic agency. The organization gives them new names, a home, jobs, a marriage, and assignments. Their domestic life is part of the operational package.

That arrangement creates the show’s central contradiction. Espionage rewards secrecy, improvisation, manipulation, and emotional control. Marriage, at least in theory, depends on openness, reliability, and vulnerability. John and Jane must perform a convincing relationship for the outside world while trying to discover whether a genuine relationship can exist underneath the performance.
The missions provide the thriller machinery, but they are also relationship tests. A dangerous assignment can expose different attitudes toward risk, competence, morality, money, loyalty, or the future. A disagreement about tactics can become an argument about respect. A private insecurity can affect a professional decision. The show’s violence therefore does more than supply action: it puts pressure on the partnership and reveals what each person is willing to protect.
How the series differs from the 2005 movie
The television series is a reimagining of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, not a straightforward retelling. In the movie, the Smiths are already married and discover that they are rival professional assassins. The 2024 series reverses that premise: its protagonists are strangers who are recruited by the same organization and given marriage as their cover identity.
That change shifts the emphasis from revealing a hidden profession to constructing intimacy. The series can spend time on first dates, sex, domestic routines, jealousy, arguments, questions about children, and the awkward process of becoming emotionally legible to another person. Its mission-of-the-week structure leaves room for individual assignments to work as self-contained thrillers while the larger story asks whether a manufactured partnership can become real.
The official background material from Amazon describes the show’s blend of espionage, action, romance, and relationship drama as a kind of “spy sandwich.” That description captures the unusual rhythm: an operation or threat may be followed by mundane domestic behavior, an uncomfortable conversation, or an argument that feels as consequential as the gunfire.
Why Mr. & Mrs. Smith works as a spy thriller and relationship drama
Trust versus deception
John and Jane’s work requires them to misdirect other people, conceal information, and adopt roles. Those same habits can damage the relationship they are supposed to be building. The show’s suspense consequently comes from more than whether a mission will succeed. It also comes from wondering what the couple is withholding from each other and whether honesty is safe.

A manufactured identity
The agency does not simply employ the Smiths; it packages a life for them. Their names, house, jobs, and marriage are assigned as components of a new identity. The premise raises a question that extends beyond espionage: is identity something a person chooses, something other people impose, or something built through repeated behavior?
Intimacy under observation
The series often makes private behavior feel exposed. Domestic habits, sexual uncertainty, awkward silences, and emotional evasions are treated as meaningful evidence. That voyeuristic quality makes the relationship feel less like polished action-romance and more like access to the things people normally conceal—even from a spouse.
Loneliness and companionship
John and Jane are not presented merely as efficient operatives. They are also people looking for a new life and some form of belonging. The creative influences discussed by the show’s creators include relationship-centered drama such as Scenes from a Marriage as well as reality-dating formats. The result is a series that treats companionship as a need that can be as urgent—and as dangerous—as any assignment.
Violence as emotional pressure
The action is stylish and consequential, but it is not the only reason the missions matter. Combat and danger expose disagreements about preparation, risk, loyalty, professional ability, and moral limits. The show is most distinctive when an operational problem continues into the brownstone and becomes a marital problem.
Cast and guest stars
| Actor | Role or contribution |
|---|---|
| Donald Glover | John Smith; co-creator and executive producer |
| Maya Erskine | Jane Smith |
| Michaela Coel | Notable guest performer |
| Paul Dano | Notable guest performer |
| John Turturro | Notable guest performer |
| Sharon Horgan | Notable guest performer |
| Parker Posey | Notable guest performer |
| Wagner Moura | Notable guest performer |
| Ron Perlman | Notable guest performer |
The guest cast is a major part of the series’ anthology-like mission design. Different assignments introduce different personalities, pressures, and tonal possibilities. However, the official cast information does not establish that every listed guest character is a permanent member of the Smiths’ organization, so it is more accurate to describe these performers as notable guest and supporting appearances rather than assign them a single organizational status.
Creators and production
Mr. & Mrs. Smith was created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. Sloane also served as showrunner and writer, while Glover was a co-creator and executive producer. The creative approach uses the familiar title and premise of the 2005 film as a starting point, then builds a more serialized examination of how two people learn to function as a couple.

This is a good choice for viewers who want a spy thriller in which the emotional consequences of a mission matter as much as its tactical outcome. It should appeal to people looking for character-driven action, uneasy marriage comedy, stories about constructed identities, or a relationship drama with genuine danger around the next corner.
Viewers expecting the 2005 film’s high-concept assassin-versus-assassin setup may find the series slower, stranger, and more intimate. Its main question is not simply whether two professionals can defeat their enemies. It is whether two strangers can build a marriage when the marriage itself began as part of the job.
