John Ramsey did not reveal a confirmed killer. In a Nov. 22, 2024 exclusive interview with PEOPLE, JonBenét Ramsey’s father theorized that a masked intruder who allegedly assaulted another Boulder girl about nine months after JonBenét’s death could have been the same person who killed his daughter.

Ramsey cited the alleged entry pattern, the proximity of the homes and a shared dance connection. Boulder police have not publicly confirmed that theory. As of Aug. 12, 2026, the homicide remains an open and ongoing investigation with no publicly announced arrest, DNA identification or official link to the later assault.

What John Ramsey actually claimed

John Ramsey did not name a confirmed killer in the interview. In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE published on Nov. 22, 2024, he offered a theory: a masked intruder who allegedly sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl in Boulder about nine months after JonBenét’s death could have been the same person who killed his daughter.

Ramsey said the later assault was the lead that most strongly suggested a connection to him. He pointed to the alleged offender already being inside the house, waiting until the household went to sleep and taking advantage of the family’s absence. He also cited the reported distance between the two homes—about two miles—and a shared dance-studio connection involving the two girls.

Those details are important to understanding Ramsey’s argument, but they remain Ramsey’s account and interpretation. Neither the Boulder Police Department’s public updates nor the reporting cited here confirms that the two crimes were committed by the same person.

The alleged similarities behind Ramsey’s theory

Ramsey’s point What it does—and does not—establish
The later offender allegedly entered the home before the family returned. Ramsey sees this as consistent with an intruder who knew how to enter and wait undetected. It does not identify the person or prove the same method was used in JonBenét’s killing.
The offender allegedly stayed inside after the burglar alarm was set. Ramsey viewed the alleged willingness to remain hidden in an occupied home as a distinctive behavior. Similar behavior alone is not a forensic identification.
The later assault occurred roughly two miles from the Ramsey home. Geographic proximity can make a possible investigative connection worth examining, but it does not establish that one offender committed both crimes.
The two girls had a connection through the same dance studio. Ramsey considered that connection significant. It should not be treated as evidence that the offender knew JonBenét or had targeted her.

Ramsey told PEOPLE that he believed it was “very possibly” the same person. He also said Boulder authorities had dismissed the possible connection. That characterization came from Ramsey; the public police material cited for this article does not confirm either a dismissal or an official finding linking the cases.

Because the later victim was a minor, this article does not identify her, her family, her address or other details that could make her identifiable.

What Boulder police have actually said

JonBenét was six years old when she was reported missing from her Boulder home on Dec. 26, 1996. She was later found dead inside the house. Boulder’s official case information says the autopsy identified strangulation as the cause of death.

The Boulder Police Department continues to describe the homicide as an open and ongoing investigation. Its case page says investigators have followed more than 21,016 tips, letters and emails, traveled to 19 states and spoken with or interviewed more than 1,000 people connected with the case. The department says it continues to work with the FBI, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, the Colorado Department of Public Safety, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and outside forensic laboratories.

In a December 2025 update, police said detectives had conducted new interviews and re-interviewed people based on tips received during the previous year. The department also said it had collected new evidence and tested or retested other evidence in an effort to develop new leads. Police noted that DNA-related methods and technology continue to evolve.

That update did not identify the people interviewed, describe the evidence tested, disclose test results, announce an arrest or name a suspect. It also did not publicly confirm a connection between the JonBenét investigation and the later Boulder assault.

Accordingly, the most supportable description of the case as of Aug. 12, 2026, is that it remains unsolved and active. Investigators say they are still working the case and examining evidence, but there has been no public confirmation of a DNA breakthrough, an identified killer or the intruder link proposed by Ramsey.

Why the DNA question is more complicated than a new test

Ramsey has repeatedly urged investigators to use newer DNA methods and genetic genealogy. In a December 2024 interview reported by ABC News, he discussed the possibility of building a reverse family tree from a usable DNA profile. A December 2025 report also said he continued pressing for advanced testing and had expressed interest in Othram, a private laboratory associated with forensic genetic genealogy.

That advocacy should not be confused with an official result. Boulder police said in a November 2022 update that the available DNA evidence is extremely small and complex. The department explained that additional testing could consume some or all of the sample, and said it had discussed the viability of further testing and genetic-genealogy analysis with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the FBI and private laboratories.

Police said additional analysis would be pursued when proven technology could reliably test samples of that type. The department’s later updates did not specify which item or items were tested, whether a usable profile was obtained or whether genetic genealogy produced a lead.

In practical terms, the existence of an investigative interest in genetic genealogy is not the same as a genetic-genealogy identification. A successful result would require a sufficiently reliable profile and a legally and investigatively meaningful path from that profile to a person. Nothing in the public updates cited here establishes that those conditions have been met.

Likewise, any probability Ramsey has expressed about genetic genealogy solving the case is his expectation, not a police estimate or a published scientific finding.

The original case and why the headline needs qualification

The investigation began with a ransom note demanding $118,000, an amount widely reported as matching John Ramsey’s bonus from that year. ABC News reported that John later found JonBenét’s body in a basement room.

The Ramsey family faced intense public suspicion, but John, Patsy and Burke Ramsey were never charged in connection with JonBenét’s killing. Patsy Ramsey died in 2006. The absence of charges should not be rewritten as a new official finding about the unidentified perpetrator, and the public record does not support presenting the family as having been legally cleared by a particular DNA result.

The case has also produced prominent false leads. In 2006, John Mark Karr publicly confessed. ABC News reported that his DNA did not match the evidence and that he was not in Boulder at the time of the murder, eliminating him as a suspect. That episode is one reason a public confession or theory must be separated from corroborated investigative evidence.

Ramsey’s 2024 comments similarly do not mean that he knows the killer’s identity in a factual or official sense. More precisely, he believes a later, allegedly similar crime may point investigators toward the kind of intruder—or possibly the same unidentified offender—responsible for JonBenét’s death.

How the Netflix documentary fits into the story

Ramsey’s interview was published ahead of Netflix’s three-episode, TV-MA documentary series Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?, which premiered on Nov. 25, 2024. The series focuses on alleged police missteps, media scrutiny and the decades-long search for justice.

Netflix’s companion Tudum coverage said director Joe Berlinger’s series includes previously unseen material, including portions of Lou Smit’s audio diaries, as well as a new interview with former Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter. Berlinger said there was “zero chance” the Ramsey family was responsible; that is the director’s view and should not be presented as an official legal finding.

For viewers following the documentary angle, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey? is the three-part series tied to the interview’s news cycle. Its availability and access can vary by country and date.

The series also illustrates the difference between audience interest and evidence. Netflix reported that it entered the English TV list at No. 1 for the week of Nov. 25, 2024, with 13.4 million views. That figure measures the documentary’s reach, not the strength of any theory about the homicide.

A published account is still a perspective, not a solution

Readers who want the Ramsey family’s published account can look for The Death of Innocence, John and Patsy Ramsey’s book about the case. It is a first-person family perspective and does not resolve the open investigation; retailer availability should be checked before publication.

What remains unanswered

  • Whether the later Boulder assault and JonBenét’s homicide involved the same offender.
  • Whether the alleged similarities described by Ramsey are supported by evidence that investigators have publicly evaluated.
  • What specific evidence police tested or retested during the work described in December 2025.
  • Whether the available DNA can produce a reliable profile without exhausting the sample.
  • Whether genetic genealogy can generate a legally and factually supportable lead.
  • Who, if anyone, will ultimately be identified and charged in JonBenét’s death.

None of those questions has been answered publicly by Boulder police as of Aug. 12, 2026.

Sources and reporting scope

This article separates John Ramsey’s statements in PEOPLE from the Boulder Police Department’s official case updates. Historical and DNA context comes from ABC News and earlier Boulder police information. Documentary details come from Netflix’s official listing and Tudum coverage. No uncharged person is identified as JonBenét’s killer, and the proposed connection to the later assault is presented as an unconfirmed theory.
