Danielle Louise Spencer, the former child actor best known as Dee Thomas on ABC’s What’s Happening!!, died on August 11, 2025, at age 60. ABC News reported that family spokesperson Sandra Jones identified gastric cancer and cardiac arrest as the causes of death. The death was announced publicly on August 12, with additional obituary coverage following on August 13.
Spencer’s television career began when she was a child, but acting was only the first chapter of her life. After appearing in two versions of What’s Happening!!, she pursued veterinary medicine, became a veterinarian in 1996, and built a professional identity that reached well beyond her familiar role as Raj Thomas’s sharp-tongued younger sister.
Danielle Spencer was Dee Thomas on What’s Happening!!
Spencer joined What’s Happening!! in 1976, playing Deadra “Dee” Thomas, the younger sister of Roger “Raj” Thomas. Dee was observant, precocious, meddling, and often sarcastic. Her recurring warning—“Ooh, I’m gonna tell mama”—became closely associated with the character.

The sitcom ran on ABC from 1976 through 1979 for three seasons and 65 episodes. Set in Los Angeles’s Watts neighborhood, it followed Raj, Dwayne Nelson, and Freddie “Rerun” Stubbs as they dealt with friendship, family, school, and adolescence. The series was loosely based on the 1975 film Cooley High.
What’s Happening!! was significant in part because it centered everyday teenage life in a Black community rather than treating its characters as occasional supporting figures in someone else’s story. Spencer was a supporting performer rather than the show’s principal star, but Dee was one of its memorable recurring characters. Her comic interruptions and blunt observations gave the Thomas family’s scenes a distinctive rhythm.
Spencer later reprised the role in the syndicated sequel What’s Happening Now!!, which ran from 1985 to 1988. In the sequel, Dee was college-aged and appeared in a recurring capacity. Entertainment-reference accounts commonly credit Spencer with 16 episodes, a figure that is best treated as reference reporting rather than a primary production record.

Her other acting work
Spencer’s work outside the What’s Happening!! franchise included appearances associated with The Brady Bunch Hour and Days of Our Lives. She also appeared in the 1997 film As Good as It Gets, playing a veterinarian—a role that had an especially resonant connection to the profession she would later enter.
A serious accident changed the course of her life
During production of the second season of What’s Happening!! in September 1977, Spencer was involved in a serious automobile accident with her stepfather, Tim Pelt. Published accounts report that Spencer spent approximately three weeks in a coma and that Pelt died in the crash. Spencer’s recovery reportedly continued for about six months.
Later biographical and obituary accounts connected the accident with continuing spinal problems, including spinal stenosis, paralysis, and debilitating pain. In 2018, she underwent emergency brain surgery for a bleeding hematoma that those accounts associated with injuries from the earlier accident. The available public reporting does not substitute for medical records, so these details are best understood as accounts of her medical history rather than independently verified clinical documentation.

Spencer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and reportedly underwent treatment, including chemotherapy. That earlier diagnosis should not be conflated with the gastric cancer identified by her family spokesperson in connection with her death in 2025. The available reporting does not establish that the two cancers were related or that the gastric cancer was a recurrence of the breast cancer.
From child actor to veterinarian
One of the defining facts of Spencer’s biography is what she did after her early fame. Published accounts state that she studied at the University of California, Davis, and later attended Tuskegee University’s veterinary school. She became a veterinarian in 1996.

Public accounts do not provide a sufficiently verified basis for assigning her a specific veterinary specialty, employer, practice location, or detailed animal-rights portfolio. What is clear is that veterinary medicine became a major part of her adult identity—one that deserves equal attention alongside her television work.
Her memoir preserves her own account
Spencer’s memoir, Through the Fire… Journal of a Child Star, offers a first-person resource for readers who want to understand the life behind the television role. Listings describe the book as covering her experience as a child performer, the 1977 accident, disability, rehabilitation, and her return to working with animals.
Bibliographic listings connect the book with Danielle Luise Spencer-Fields and Cheryl P. Pelt and place its publication around 2010–2011. Because the available evidence comes primarily from book-listing and reader-reference pages rather than a publisher catalog, exact publication details and current availability should be checked before purchasing. The memoir should also be treated as Spencer’s own account, not as a substitute for independent medical or production records.

A life that extended beyond Dee Thomas
For many viewers, Danielle Spencer will remain associated with Dee Thomas: the quick-witted girl who could puncture a scene with a sarcastic remark or threaten to tell her mother. That role mattered. What’s Happening!! was part of a period of television history in which Black teenagers and their families occupied the center of a popular situation comedy, and Spencer helped make its youngest Thomas family member memorable.

But her legacy is broader than a role she played as a child. She survived a devastating accident, dealt with serious long-term health challenges, returned to education, became a veterinarian, and documented parts of that journey in her own memoir. Spencer died on August 11, 2025, but the story of her life does not end with the television character who first made her famous.
