Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara return for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), which continues the story of the Deetz family 35 years after Tim Burton’s original Beetlejuice (1988). This guide identifies the main performers, explains their characters, and maps the relationships connecting the two films.
Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara return for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the 2024 continuation of Tim Burton’s 1988 supernatural comedy. The original film centers on recently deceased Adam and Barbara Maitland, teenage Lydia Deetz, and the dangerous “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice. The sequel moves the story decades forward, adding Lydia’s daughter Astrid, Beetlejuice’s vengeful former wife Delores, and afterlife detective Wolf Jackson.
This guide covers the principal characters and performers in both live-action feature films: Beetlejuice (1988) and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). It does not attempt to catalog the animated series, Broadway musical, or wider merchandise franchise.
Beetlejuice (1988): cast and characters
Tim Burton’s original film follows Adam and Barbara Maitland, a married couple who die in an accident but remain attached to their former home. When the Deetz family moves in and begins transforming the house, the Maitlands try to scare them away. Their attempt to summon Beetlejuice creates a threat far more troublesome than the living occupants.

Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice is the film’s flamboyant, unscrupulous title character. He presents himself as a supernatural “bio-exorcist”—essentially a specialist in frightening living people—but his help comes with serious risks. The Maitlands can summon him by saying his name three times, yet Beetlejuice is opportunistic, manipulative, and dangerous rather than a trustworthy ally.
The name is commonly written Beetlejuice, while Betelgeuse is an in-universe alternate spelling. “Beetlejuice” is the standard form for the film title and character search.
Alec Baldwin as Adam Maitland
Adam is one half of the deceased Maitland couple. He remains tied to the house he shared with Barbara and initially wants the new Deetz occupants gone. Adam is the more cautious and practical of the two Maitlands, which makes him a useful contrast to Beetlejuice’s impulsive schemes.
Geena Davis as Barbara Maitland
Barbara is Adam’s wife and fellow ghost. She shares Adam’s desire to reclaim their home, but the couple’s decision to involve Beetlejuice turns their domestic haunting into a much larger supernatural crisis. Barbara is one of the emotional anchors of the original film’s ghost story.

Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz
Lydia is Charles Deetz’s goth-leaning teenage daughter and the living person most receptive to the supernatural. Unlike her parents, she can see Adam and Barbara, making her the bridge between the Deetz family and the Maitlands.
Lydia’s relationship with Beetlejuice is uneasy from the beginning. She is not simply another person to frighten away: her ability to perceive the dead makes her central to the film’s supernatural conflict. Ryder returns as an adult Lydia in the sequel.

Jeffrey Jones as Charles Deetz
Charles is Lydia’s father and Delia’s husband. He brings the living Deetz family into the Maitlands’ former home, where his family’s plans for the property collide with the ghosts already occupying it.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice takes place after Charles’s death, which helps set the sequel’s family story in motion. Jeffrey Jones is not part of the sequel’s principal returning cast.
Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz
Delia is Lydia’s stepmother and Charles’s wife. In the original, she is an image-conscious and eccentric art-world personality whose remodeling ambitions conflict with the Maitlands’ attachment to their home. O’Hara returns in the sequel, where Delia is part of a three-generation Deetz family.
Glenn Shadix as Otho
Otho is Delia’s flamboyant acquaintance and becomes involved in the Deetz household’s supernatural events. He is a memorable supporting character in the 1988 film, but he should not be presented as one of the principal continuing leads in the 2024 sequel.
Sylvia Sidney as Juno
Juno is the Maitlands’ caseworker in the afterlife bureaucracy. She explains the rules and limitations facing the dead and warns Adam and Barbara about Beetlejuice’s true nature. Her scenes establish the film’s distinctive vision of the afterlife as a strange, procedural institution.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024): cast and characters
The sequel is a direct continuation of the Deetz-family story and is set 35 years after the original film. After a family tragedy, Lydia returns to Winter River with Delia and her daughter Astrid. A mysterious model of the town and a reopened portal to the Afterlife draw Astrid into the supernatural world.

Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice
Michael Keaton reprises the title role. Beetlejuice still wants access to the living world and has not abandoned his fixation on marrying Lydia. His plans become more complicated when Delores, his vengeful former wife, returns and Wolf Jackson begins pursuing him.
Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz
Ryder returns as an adult Lydia, whose ability to see ghosts remains central to the story. Lydia is now a mother and hosts the paranormal television program Ghost House with Rory. The sequel shifts much of her emotional focus toward her strained relationship with Astrid.
Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz
O’Hara returns as Delia, now Lydia’s stepmother and Astrid’s grandmother. Rather than functioning only as the eccentric art-world intruder from the first film, Delia is part of the sequel’s three-generation family dynamic.
Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz
Astrid is Lydia’s rebellious teenage daughter and the sequel’s principal new human character. She becomes connected to the mysterious model of Winter River and gets entangled with the portal to the Afterlife.
Astrid’s relationship with Lydia drives much of the sequel’s human storyline. The mother and daughter are emotionally distant, and the supernatural crisis forces them to confront that distance while dealing with the consequences of opening a path between worlds.
Justin Theroux as Rory
Rory is Lydia’s manager, boyfriend, and later fiancé. He works with Lydia on Ghost House, but he is not Astrid’s father. His role connects Lydia’s public paranormal persona with the family and romantic conflicts unfolding in Winter River.

Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson
Wolf Jackson is an afterlife investigator and ghost detective pursuing Beetlejuice. The character also has a show-business past: he was a B-movie action star while alive. Wolf’s investigation gives the sequel an additional afterlife authority figure besides the bureaucratic characters associated with the original.
Arthur Conti as Jeremy
Jeremy is a significant new character connected to Astrid’s storyline. Arthur Conti plays the role in the sequel.
Nick Kellington as Bob-Shrinker

Which film should you watch first?
Watch Beetlejuice (1988) before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice if you want the clearest understanding of the relationships. The original establishes Lydia’s ability to see ghosts, the Maitlands’ connection to the house, Beetlejuice’s behavior, and the Deetz family history. The sequel can be understood on its own at a basic plot level, but its family conflicts and Beetlejuice’s fixation on Lydia carry more context when viewed in release order.
Home-video options for both films
For viewers who prefer a physical edition, the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is the most direct match for the sequel section of this guide. Warner Bros. home-entertainment material documents a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray release. Edition-specific extras can vary by market; the documented Japanese home release includes a 36-page booklet, character cards, a poster, behind-the-scenes features, a stop-motion featurette, and Tim Burton audio commentary.
Fans revisiting the source film can also look for the Beetlejuice 1988 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Availability, packaging, and the exact contents of a particular listing can change, so check the edition details before buying—especially if you want a gift set or particular extras.
Costumes and collectibles for fans
Beetlejuice’s black-and-white striped suit makes a Beetlejuice striped suit costume a natural choice for Halloween, cosplay, or a themed event. Costume listings vary substantially in fabric, cut, sizing, and licensing. A striped suit is not automatically an officially licensed product, so verify the seller, size chart, return policy, and licensing description before ordering.

These are dubbing performances, not additional live-action cast members, and should be kept separate from the primary cast list.
