Eminem announced The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) in April 2024, but the album is no longer forthcoming: it arrived on July 12, 2024. Its rollout treated the apparent death of Slim Shady as a true-crime-style mystery, with “Houdini” as the lead single and a 19-track finished album that later debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and U.K.

The announcement is now history: Eminem revealed The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) in April 2024, and the completed album was released on July 12, 2024. The 19-track LP became a No. 1 album in both the United States and the United Kingdom, while its rollout presented the apparent death of Eminem’s most famous alter ego as a true-crime-style mystery.

An album announcement staged like an obituary

Eminem introduced the project in late April 2024 with an obituary-style trailer focused on Slim Shady. Rather than announcing a title through a conventional music video or press statement, the campaign used the visual language of a news report and true-crime investigation. Its central question was not simply what Eminem would rap about next, but what had happened to Slim Shady.

That framing gave the album its initial dramatic premise. “Slim Shady” is Eminem’s deliberately provocative alter ego, associated with the darker humor, shock value, violent fantasies, and confrontational wordplay that defined much of his early work. The title’s reference to a coup de grâce—a finishing blow—made the character’s apparent death seem like the subject of the record.

However, the campaign should not be treated as proof that Eminem permanently retired the persona or stopped making music. The death was a promotional and conceptual device. It encouraged listeners to approach the album as a story about the character’s fate without establishing that this was Eminem’s final album or that Slim Shady could never return.

What Eminem announced—and when

The April reveal described the project as a summer 2024 release but did not initially provide a specific day. It followed Music to Be Murdered By, Eminem’s 2020 studio album and, at that point, his most recent major album-era release.

On May 31, Eminem’s official site identified the project as his 12th album and announced “Houdini” as its first single. The exact album date arrived later: a trailer publicized on July 2 confirmed that The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) would be released on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Some readers may encounter July 11 as the streaming date. Eminem’s official site announced that the album was available on streaming platforms on July 11, while Shady Records lists July 12 as the formal release date. These references describe the timing of the digital availability and the listed release date, not two separate releases.

“Houdini” brought Slim Shady into the present

“Houdini,” released on May 31, was the lead single and the first substantial musical preview of the album. Its title reinforced the campaign’s interest in disappearance, escape, and the possibility that Slim Shady might evade the fate suggested by the announcement.

Eminem produced the song, which uses a sample and interpolation of Steve Miller Band’s “Abracadabra.” The music video turns that musical idea into a collision between different stages of Eminem’s career: a version of Slim Shady arrives in the present day, creating a deliberately comic and disruptive encounter with contemporary culture.

The video included appearances from Dr. Dre, Pete Davidson, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Jimmy Iovine, and other familiar figures. It also used generative artificial intelligence supplied by Metaphysic as part of its production. The result functioned as more than a standalone single: it established the album’s time-bending promotional language and made the older Slim Shady persona visible before the full record arrived.

“Tobey” completed the pre-release rollout

The second major pre-album release was “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron. It arrived on July 2 alongside the announcement of the album’s release date. On the official album sequence, “Tobey” is track 17, placing it late in the finished project rather than at the beginning of the narrative.

That positioning matters: the singles introduced the project’s public-facing campaign, but they do not by themselves explain the complete story. The album includes skits and transitions that make it a sequenced project rather than a simple collection of promotional tracks.

The official 19-track sequence

Shady Records lists The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) as a 19-track album. The full sequence is:

  1. “Renaissance”
  2. “Habits”
  3. “Trouble”
  4. “Brand New Dance”
  5. “Evil”
  6. “All You Got” (skit)
  7. “Lucifer”
  8. “Antichrist”
  9. “Fuel”
  10. “Road Rage”
  11. “Houdini”
  12. “Breaking News” (skit)
  13. “Guilty Conscience 2”
  14. “Head Honcho”
  15. “Temporary”
  16. “Bad One”
  17. “Tobey” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron
  18. “Guess Who’s Back” (skit)
  19. “Somebody Save Me”

The three explicitly identified skits—“All You Got,” “Breaking News,” and “Guess Who’s Back”—help support the album’s conceptual presentation. They also caution against reducing the record to a straightforward “Slim Shady is dead” announcement. The marketing supplies a narrative frame, but the exact meaning of each song and the album’s ending remains open to interpretation rather than having one officially declared explanation.

A return to the Slim Shady persona, with a divided reception

The finished album returned Eminem to a persona that had been central to his early career, but that return created an obvious tension. For some listeners, it offered the appeal of revisiting a recognizable character; for others, the project raised questions about nostalgia, provocation, and whether an older persona can operate in the same way decades later.

Contemporary critical discussion was mixed. Reviews and coverage debated the album’s relationship with Eminem’s earlier work and the idea of ending—or symbolically killing off—Slim Shady. It is more accurate to describe the reception as divided than to call it universally acclaimed or universally rejected. A single consensus score would also be incomplete without specifying which review aggregate and which date is being used.

Chart performance

The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 for the chart week of July 24, 2024. It also reached No. 1 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart. The U.K. chart record showed a peak of No. 1 and 24 weeks on the chart in its December 27, 2024 listing.

Chart totals are time-sensitive archival figures, so the U.K. weeks-on-chart number should be read with that December 27, 2024 reference date rather than as an unchanging lifetime total.

Physical editions and collector formats

Eminem’s official store promoted several physical editions, including a standard-cover crayon-colored vinyl, an alternate-cover blood-stain clear vinyl, CD editions, and a translucent red cassette. The store’s product listings also included digital album products. Availability has varied: at the time reflected in the research, several CD, marble-vinyl, cassette, and alternate clear-vinyl listings were marked sold out.

For shoppers, the most useful album-specific search is Eminem The Death of Slim Shady vinyl. That wording identifies the main physical format without promising that a particular color variant is still available. Stock, pricing, seller identity, pressing details, and condition should all be checked at the time of purchase. The same caution applies to The Death of Slim Shady CD and the The Death of Slim Shady translucent red cassette: the official store documented those formats, but an earlier sold-out status does not establish current availability elsewhere.

For collectors, the cover variation may be as important as the playback format. For ordinary listeners, the standard vinyl, CD, digital release, and streaming edition all contain the same official 19-track sequence; a particular physical color or alternate cover should not be treated as a different album unless an edition-specific bonus track is explicitly documented.

Why the announcement still matters

The rollout was effective because it made the album’s subject a question before it made the tracklist the news. The obituary trailer supplied a mystery, “Houdini” visualized a collision between past and present, and “Tobey” arrived with the final release-date confirmation. By the time the album appeared, listeners had been invited to think about whether Slim Shady was being revived, judged, transformed, or symbolically killed off.

The answer is not a confirmed permanent retirement. What can be stated with confidence is narrower and more useful: Eminem announced the project in April 2024, shaped its promotion around the apparent death of Slim Shady, released the finished 19-track album on July 12, 2024, and used the record to revisit the alter ego’s place in his music.
