The cast of Jaws took very different paths after the 1975 film. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Murray Hamilton died in the years that followed; Richard Dreyfuss remains the surviving member of the movie’s central Brody-Hooper-Quint trio; Lorraine Gary retired from acting; and Jeffrey Kramer moved into television production. The current lives of some other performers are not reliably documented, so this account separates confirmed facts from unanswered questions.
Three of Jaws’ best-known adult performers—Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Murray Hamilton—have died. Richard Dreyfuss, who played Matt Hooper, is the surviving member of the film’s famous Brody-Hooper-Quint trio, while Lorraine Gary is retired from acting. Several supporting performers followed very different paths: Jeffrey Kramer moved into television production, Susan Backlinie remained closely associated with the opening attack until her death in 2024, and the current lives of some child actors and crew-performers are not reliably documented.
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws was released in 1975 and turned a summer beach story into a landmark of modern blockbuster filmmaking. Its cast remains one of the reasons the film still works: Scheider supplied the anxious humanity of Chief Martin Brody, Shaw gave Quint his dangerous charisma, Dreyfuss brought scientific skepticism to Hooper, and Hamilton made Mayor Larry Vaughn’s political calculation instantly recognizable.
The principal cast of Jaws: where are they now?
Roy Scheider as Chief Martin Brody
Roy Scheider was the emotional center of Jaws as Martin Brody, the Amity police chief who fears the water but understands the danger before the town’s leadership is willing to act. His “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” reaction became one of the film’s defining moments.

Scheider returned as Brody in Jaws 2 and maintained a substantial film and television career. His later credits included All That Jazz, Blue Thunder, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and The Russia House, in addition to his earlier work in The French Connection.
Scheider died in Little Rock, Arkansas, on February 10, 2008, at age 75. The Television Academy reported that he had been battling multiple myeloma and also suffered a fatal staph infection. For a brief cast update, the essential fact is that the actor who anchored the original film died in 2008 after a long illness. [c003]
Robert Shaw as Quint
Robert Shaw played Quint, the grizzled shark hunter whose experience, pride, and trauma make him the most dangerous person aboard the Orca—at least until the shark attacks. Shaw’s account of the USS Indianapolis disaster remains the film’s most famous monologue and gives Quint a depth that extends beyond the role of a stereotypical sea captain.
Shaw was already an acclaimed stage and screen actor before Jaws. Afterward, he continued appearing in major productions, including The Sting, A Man for All Seasons, From Russia with Love, and Force 10 from Navarone.

Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper
Richard Dreyfuss played Matt Hooper, the marine biologist who arrives in Amity with technical knowledge, enthusiasm, and a willingness to challenge both Brody and Quint. Hooper is the only member of the film’s central three-man boat crew who was still living as of the research cutoff.

Dreyfuss went on to become an Academy Award-winning actor. He won the Oscar for Best Actor for The Goodbye Girl and continued working with Spielberg in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Always. The Academy’s records document his win for The Goodbye Girl. [c005]
He also remained publicly connected to Jaws. At the film’s 50th-anniversary celebrations on Martha’s Vineyard in June 2025, Dreyfuss appeared with Jeffrey Kramer, signed autographs, and discussed the production. That is recent evidence of public activity, but it does not establish details about his private life, health, or day-to-day routine. [c006] [c007]

Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody
Lorraine Gary played Ellen Brody, Martin Brody’s wife and a crucial source of the film’s domestic perspective. She reprised the role in both Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge.
Gary’s last credited film appearance was Jaws: The Revenge in 1987. She subsequently largely withdrew from acting and is generally described in biographical references as a retired actress. Recent public images and coverage connected with the Jaws 50th-anniversary period do not provide a reliable, detailed account of a new professional career or her private routine.
There is no sound basis for reporting that Gary has died. The accurate update is simply that she retired from acting after completing the Brody trilogy. [c001] [c008]
Murray Hamilton as Mayor Larry Vaughn
Murray Hamilton played Amity mayor Larry Vaughn, the official who worries that closing the beaches will damage the town’s tourist economy. His insistence on keeping the beaches open makes him one of the film’s most memorable antagonistic figures, even though the shark—not the mayor—is the immediate threat.

Hamilton had already built a long career in stage, film, and television before Jaws, and he continued working afterward as a character actor. He died on September 1, 1986, at age 63. Reference biographies identify lung cancer as the cause of death. [c001] [c009]
Notable supporting cast members
Jeffrey Kramer as Deputy Leonard Hendricks
Jeffrey Kramer played Deputy Leonard Hendricks, one of the Amity police officers helping Brody respond to the attacks. He reprised the part in Jaws 2.
Kramer later moved substantially behind the scenes and became a television producer. His production credits include The Practice and Ally McBeal. He has also remained willing to discuss Jaws publicly: he appeared with Dreyfuss at the 2025 Martha’s Vineyard anniversary events, and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum listed him for a behind-the-scenes program about the film.
Among the supporting performers, Kramer has one of the clearest documented “where are they now?” stories: he shifted from acting into television production and continued participating in Jaws-related public events decades later. [c006] [c010]
Susan Backlinie as Chrissie Watkins
Susan Backlinie played Chrissie Watkins, the swimmer killed in the opening attack. Her nighttime swim is one of the most recognizable sequences in the movie, and the performance helped establish the shark as an unseen, almost supernatural threat before audiences ever saw it clearly.
Backlinie also worked as a stunt performer and remained associated with the film through public appearances and fan conventions. She died on May 11, 2024, at age 77. Contemporary reports, citing information from her husband and representatives, identified a heart attack as the cause. [c011] [c012]

- SECURE PACKAGE: Each frame is individually plastic sealed with corner guard and finally overall sealed to ensure safe shipping and avoid damaged. Strong collisions may cause the frame corners to separate, just simply slide the strips to get a intact poster frame again.
One distinction matters: Backlinie was an actress and stunt performer playing a fictional victim. She was not harmed by a shark during filming, and calling her “the first victim in real life” repeats a misleading myth.
Chris Rebello as Michael Brody
Chris Rebello played Michael Brody, one of Chief Brody’s sons. He died on November 30, 2000, at age 37. Biographical reporting says he suffered a heart attack while deer hunting in Massachusetts. Because the available death information comes chiefly from biographical records rather than a substantial contemporary newspaper archive, the date and age are more useful here than additional personal detail. [c013]
Carl Gottlieb as Ben Meadows—and screenwriter
Carl Gottlieb appears in Jaws as Ben Meadows, the newspaper editor. His more important contribution was behind the camera: he co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Benchley. Universal’s 50th-anniversary materials credit the screenplay to Benchley and Gottlieb.
Gottlieb is therefore both a cast member and a key creative contributor. The research does not establish a sufficiently authoritative current biography for a definitive update about his present status, so it would be misleading to speculate about his work, residence, or personal life. [c001]
Jay Mello as Sean Brody
Jay Mello played Sean Brody, the younger of the Brody children. His role is documented in cast listings, but no sufficiently authoritative current biography or public professional profile was located for him.
That leaves a clear research boundary: there is no reliable basis here for stating what Mello does now, where he lives, whether he remains in entertainment, or even details about his private life. Sparse public coverage is not proof of death or retirement. [c014]

What happened to the Jaws cast after the movie?
| Performer | Jaws role | Documented later path |
|---|---|---|
| Roy Scheider | Chief Martin Brody | Continued as a leading film and television actor; died in 2008. |
| Robert Shaw | Quint | Continued his distinguished stage and screen career; died in 1978. |
| Richard Dreyfuss | Matt Hooper | Won an Academy Award and remained publicly connected to Jaws, including the 2025 anniversary events. |
| Lorraine Gary | Ellen Brody | Retired from acting after Jaws: The Revenge in 1987. |
| Murray Hamilton | Mayor Larry Vaughn | Continued working as a character actor; died in 1986. |
| Jeffrey Kramer | Deputy Leonard Hendricks | Moved into television production and later appeared at Jaws-related events. |
| Susan Backlinie | Chrissie Watkins | Worked as an actress and stunt performer; died in 2024. |
The group’s story is unusually varied. Scheider became a durable screen presence before his death; Shaw’s career ended abruptly at 51; Dreyfuss became the most visible surviving member of the central trio; Gary left acting; Hamilton continued as a familiar character actor; and Kramer shifted into television production. Backlinie’s brief but unforgettable appearance continued to define how many viewers remembered her career.
The Jaws 50th anniversary and how to rewatch the film
The 50th anniversary of the film’s U.S. release took place in 2025—not 2026. Universal released the Jaws 50th Anniversary Edition on June 17, 2025, in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital formats. The physical combo pack includes the documentary Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story and more than five hours of bonus features. Universal’s catalog also lists standard Blu-ray and DVD options. [c001] [c015]
For viewers who want the most substantial current physical release, the Jaws 50th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray edition is the natural collector-oriented choice, particularly if the documentary and extensive bonus material matter to you. It is not essential to appreciate the movie, and a 4K disc requires compatible equipment.
If you do not have a 4K player, Universal also lists Jaws on Blu-ray and DVD. Those are format alternatives rather than newer anniversary upgrades, and the right choice depends on the equipment you already own.

Why the cast still matters
Jaws is often remembered as the movie that made the summer blockbuster, but its staying power depends heavily on the people above the waterline. Brody’s fear, Hooper’s curiosity, Quint’s obsession, Vaughn’s economic pressure, and Ellen Brody’s concern create a human conflict that continues even when the shark is off-screen.
The cast’s later history also explains why anniversary coverage needs care. Some performers have well-documented deaths and careers; Gary is reliably described as retired; Kramer’s move into production is well established; and the current circumstances of Gottlieb and Mello are not sufficiently documented in the available research. “Where are they now?” should not turn an absence of public information into an invented biography.

The Bottom Line
The short version: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Murray Hamilton, Susan Backlinie, and Chris Rebello have died. Richard Dreyfuss remains the surviving member of the original Brody-Hooper-Quint trio and appeared at the 2025 anniversary celebrations. Lorraine Gary retired from acting, Jeffrey Kramer moved into television production, and the available research does not justify claims about the current lives of Carl Gottlieb or Jay Mello.
