Presence (2024) is a ghost story in which the ghost is also the camera. Steven Soderbergh turns an unseen supernatural observer into the film’s viewpoint, allowing it to glide, retreat and linger through a family’s troubled life inside an old suburban house. The result is less a conventional haunted-house movie than a formally restricted family drama about watching, grief and repeated harm.
Presence (2024) is a ghost story in which the ghost is also the camera. Steven Soderbergh does not simply show an unseen spirit haunting a suburban home; he restricts the entire film to that entity’s point of view. The camera glides through rooms, pauses at doorways, rushes down hallways and lingers beside the family as though it is thinking, remembering or trying to decide what to do.
That formal decision makes Presence less a conventional haunted-house movie than a tightly controlled family drama filtered through a supernatural observer. The household’s arguments, secrets and instability provide the story, but the camera’s impossible movement provides the film’s personality.

What is Presence about?
A family moves into an older suburban house and soon realizes that they may not be alone. The entity in the house was there before the family arrived, and it observes their private lives from a position no human character can share.
Rebekah, played by Lucy Liu, tries to manage a household already under pressure. Chris Sullivan plays her husband, Chris, while Callina Liang and Eddy Maday play the children, Chloe and Tyler. The family does not enter the house as a stable unit: resentment, grief, secrecy and emotional distance are already present. The supernatural disturbance exposes those fractures rather than replacing them.
NEON’s premise deliberately leaves the entity’s motives open. It appears to want or need something, but Presence does not immediately explain what that means. Instead, the viewer learns about the house and its residents by following the observer’s attention. What the camera approaches, avoids or returns to becomes part of the mystery.
The camera is the film’s main character
Soderbergh’s central experiment is simple to describe and difficult to execute: the film is shot entirely from the presence’s point of view. There are no ordinary cutaways to show the supernatural protagonist, no conventional reverse angles that place the audience outside the haunting, and no sustained human viewpoint that explains what the entity is doing.

A quick movement through the house can suggest urgency. A retreat from a room can feel like fear. A prolonged pause can indicate curiosity, attachment or indecision. The presence is defined through behavior, and camera movement becomes its body language.
This is why describing the film as merely a handheld POV movie misses its most important feature. The viewpoint is not an ordinary human camera carried through the home. It moves with supernatural speed and freedom, hovering in rooms and traveling between spaces in ways unavailable to the family. It is closer to an invisible resident with an emotional connection to the house than to a conventional cinematographic observer.
Soderbergh both directed and operated the camera. He shot under the name Peter Andrews, a family name he has used for cinematography credits, and the production used a small digital camera. The crew reportedly filmed the movie in 11 days, with Soderbergh wearing slippers to minimize the sound of his footsteps. Those practical details matter because the film’s effect depends on movement that feels deliberate but not mechanically obvious.
How the restricted viewpoint changes the horror
1. The house becomes a map of the story
In a standard haunted-house film, rooms mainly provide atmosphere or hiding places. In Presence, each room is also a position from which the unseen observer can watch, withdraw or intervene. Hallways connect moments of tension. Bedrooms become sites of private behavior. Stairs and doorways control what the presence can see and how quickly it can respond.

- DIMENSIONS: This large picture frame features a 1.1-inch wide modern profile and holds a 27x40 x 0.75 poster, picture or artwork.
The home is therefore not just a setting. It is a narrative system. The film’s suspense often comes from spatial questions: Where is the presence now? What has it noticed? What is happening in another room? Why has it chosen to stay?
2. Domestic scenes become supernatural scenes
Many of the film’s most uncomfortable moments are not built around spectacular apparitions. They come from arguments, silences and small signs that the family is failing to communicate. Because the camera is always aligned with the presence, even an ordinary family conversation carries an additional question: what does the observer understand that the people onscreen do not?
This gives the film an unusual blend of household realism and supernatural subjectivity. The dialogue and interpersonal conflict belong to a family drama, while the camera’s impossible position turns that drama into a haunting.
3. Watching becomes part of the subject
The presence watches the family, but the audience also watches through the presence. That creates an ethical and emotional tension. The camera can seem protective in one moment, intrusive in another and almost predatory in a third. The viewer is not placed safely outside the haunting; the viewer is made to share the act of surveillance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat choice also makes the audience work harder. Rather than waiting for the film to show a ghost in a doorway, viewers scan the frame, track movement and infer emotion from the observer’s decisions. The question is not simply whether something is in the house. The question is what that something feels, remembers and wants.
Family dysfunction, grief and inherited harm
Presence uses the haunted-house premise to examine a family carrying emotional baggage into a new home. The house does not create every problem. It reveals pressure that was already there.
The film’s deeper concern is the possibility that destructive behavior can repeat itself. The family’s instability is connected to an earlier tragedy, allowing the supernatural story to function as a meditation on grief and inherited harm. The presence is not treated only as a jump-scare device; its connection to the house gives the haunting an unfinished, almost mournful quality.
That emotional dimension helps explain why the camera sometimes feels as if it is searching rather than attacking. Its movements can be read as attempts to understand the family, to remain close to certain people or to respond to danger. The film withholds conventional exposition, but it makes the ghost’s behavior increasingly legible.

Spoilers: what the presence means and how the ending works
Warning: this section discusses the identity of the presence and the film’s ending.
The film eventually connects the entity’s history to the possibility that the family’s violence and destructive conduct may repeat an earlier tragedy. The haunting is not random, and the camera’s previous movements take on new meaning once the viewer understands the presence’s relationship to what happened in the house.
The ending reframes the film’s formal gimmick as emotional behavior. The presence has not merely been wandering through rooms because the production needs an unusual camera angle. It has been reacting to the family, observing patterns and trying to understand—or intervene in—what it sees. Earlier moments of approach, hesitation and retreat become signs of attachment, fear and urgency.
This does not turn Presence into a conventional explanation-heavy ghost movie. The film still leaves some of its supernatural experience open to interpretation. Its payoff lies less in a complete mythology than in the realization that the camera has been expressing a point of view all along. The ghost’s first-person perspective is also the film’s emotional perspective.

Is Presence scary?
That depends on what kind of horror you want. Presence is not primarily a spectacle-driven haunted-house film built around a constant stream of jump scares. Its tension comes from restricted information, spatial uncertainty and the discomfort of watching a family’s private life through an invisible observer.
Viewers interested in experimental cinematography, slow-building supernatural mysteries and family drama may find the approach unusually absorbing. Viewers expecting a faster plot, frequent shocks or a clearly visible monster may find the deliberate pacing less satisfying.
The film’s conceptually positive reception has centered on its unusual construction, cinematography and single-location discipline. Audience response has been more divided, largely because the same formal restraint that makes the film distinctive also limits its pace and conventional horror payoffs.
How Presence was made
Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp treated the film’s restrictions as a creative engine. The production confined itself to one primary location and one supernatural viewpoint. Koepp has described this kind of limitation as useful because arbitrary rules narrow the available choices and can force more inventive solutions.

The result is a film in which production method and story premise are inseparable. A conventional camera would tell a different story. A visible ghost would create a different relationship between the viewer and the family. By refusing both, Soderbergh makes the camera’s movement carry exposition, atmosphere and character information at the same time.
At 84 minutes, the film is compact enough to sustain that experiment without expanding into a larger mythology. Its modest scale is part of its identity: the drama stays inside the house, and the house stays inside the presence’s field of attention.

The film attracted attention because of its formal idea rather than scale or spectacle. Its most marketable feature is also its artistic risk: the camera is effectively the titular character.
Who should watch Presence?
- Watch it if you enjoy supernatural films that experiment with point of view.
- Watch it if domestic conflict, grief and family secrets interest you as much as traditional horror.
- Watch it if you like analyzing camera movement, blocking and the way a house organizes a story.
- Approach cautiously if you want frequent jump scares, a visible monster or rapid plot progression.
- Choose the 4K release if you have compatible equipment and want the strongest listed audio specification; the standard Blu-ray retains the same 1.78:1 presentation and 84-minute runtime.
Final verdict
Presence works because its formal rule is not decoration. Making the camera identical with the ghost changes how the audience understands space, family conflict and suspense. The entity’s movements supply the exposition that another film might deliver through dialogue or reaction shots.
It is a small, controlled and sometimes deliberately quiet horror film, but its restraint has a purpose. Soderbergh turns camera movement into character, then uses that character to watch a family repeating the kinds of damage that make a house feel haunted long before anything supernatural appears.
