What is Reminders of Him about?
Seven years after a tragic mistake led to her imprisonment, Kenna Rowan returns to her Wyoming hometown hoping to start over. Her most important goal is to meet Diem, her young daughter, who was raised by her late father’s parents and has never known Kenna as her mother.

- Baby is becoming a young woman in the summer where she meets Johnny Castle who teaches dance at a family Summer Camp and in his off hours Dirty Dances with the other dancers. She learns a routine so that one of the women can recover from an abortion and becomes Johnny's lover. As the summer winds down, Each must come to grips with responsibility and love and others' expectations.
Diem’s custodial grandparents, Grace and Patrick Landry, do not trust Kenna and refuse her efforts to establish a relationship with the child. Their opposition reflects the grief surrounding the past as well as their fear that Kenna could disrupt the life they have built for Diem. Kenna is therefore forced to seek forgiveness and prove her intentions while much of the local community treats her with suspicion.
Kenna finds an unexpected ally in Ledger Ward, a former NFL player who owns a local bar and has a connection to Diem. As Ledger offers Kenna understanding, the two develop a secret romance. Their relationship complicates an already fragile situation: Ledger must balance his feelings for Kenna with his ties to Diem and the people protecting her.
The movie is a romantic drama, but romance is only one part of its conflict. Its larger subjects are motherhood, grief, accountability, forgiveness, and whether a person can earn a second chance after causing life-changing harm. The custody and family conflict is as central to the story as Kenna and Ledger’s relationship.

Director, writers, and producers
Vanessa Caswill directed Reminders of Him. Colleen Hoover and Lauren Levine wrote the screenplay from Hoover’s novel. Hoover also produced the film with Levine and Gina Matthews, while Robin Mulcahy Fisichella served as executive producer.
Universal identifies the film as a Heartbones Entertainment and Little Engine production. Its headline creative team is notably female-led, with Caswill directing and Hoover and Levine handling the screenplay.
Hoover’s involvement extends beyond the source material. Peacock’s production guide describes this as the first adaptation of one of her novels in which she was able to adapt the book into the screenplay, as well as participate through the filmmaking process. That direct involvement makes the film different from an adaptation based only on an existing Hoover story.

The book behind the movie
Reminders of Him is adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel, first published on January 18, 2022. Hoover’s book follows a troubled young mother seeking redemption after prison and attempting to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. Ledger Ward is also the local bar owner who becomes one of Kenna’s few remaining links to her child.
Readers who want the source material can start with the original Reminders of Him novel. The book offers the longer version of Kenna’s history, her struggle to be accepted by the community, and the relationships surrounding Diem.
A difference in the official summaries
There is one notable wording discrepancy between the current official book and movie descriptions. Universal’s film synopsis says that Kenna served seven years in prison. Hoover’s current book-page copy describes Kenna as having served five years.
Those figures should not be silently combined or treated as interchangeable. The seven-year figure is the appropriate description when discussing the movie, while the five-year figure belongs to the wording on the author’s current book page. The discrepancy may reflect an adaptation change or differing synopsis copy, but the available material does not establish the reason.

Why the film is more than a conventional romance
The relationship between Kenna and Ledger provides the film’s romantic storyline, but it is also the mechanism through which Kenna begins to re-enter a community that has rejected her. Ledger’s connection to Diem means that his support is never emotionally separate from the custody conflict.
That structure gives the film two linked questions rather than one: can Kenna and Ledger build a relationship under secrecy and pressure, and can Kenna become part of Diem’s life after years of absence? The answer depends less on a declaration of love than on accountability, patience, and the willingness of other characters to decide whether trust can be rebuilt.
