The Empress Season 3 is officially happening—and it will be the final season. Netflix has confirmed a six-episode conclusion, with the current release window set for the end of 2026. Production began in 2025, but an exact premiere date and trailer have not yet been announced.
The Empress Season 3 is confirmed—and it will be the Netflix historical drama’s final season. Netflix renewed the series on January 27, 2025, and later described the conclusion as a six-part finale. The current release window is the end of 2026. Netflix has not announced an exact premiere date, trailer, episode titles, runtimes, or release schedule.
When will The Empress Season 3 be released?
Netflix currently lists The Empress Season 3 for the end of 2026. That means viewers should expect the final season in late 2026, but there is no confirmed day or month yet.
Reports suggesting a specific November or December launch go beyond the official information currently available. Until Netflix gives a firm date, “coming to Netflix at the end of 2026” is the most accurate description.

Season 3 is the final season
Netflix’s January 27, 2025 renewal announcement explicitly calls Season 3 the third and final season. The later production announcement reinforces that description and confirms that the conclusion will consist of six episodes.
There is no indication in the official announcements that the story will continue into a fourth season or a separate sequel series. Season 3 is being presented as the planned ending of the show starring Devrim Lingnau as Elisabeth and Philip Froissant as Franz.
Production began in 2025
Netflix announced on October 14, 2025, that production was underway. The creative team returned to work in September 2025, and filming was taking place in:
- Bavaria, Germany;
- the Czech Republic; and
- parts of Spain.
Netflix has not stated in the official material reviewed that filming has wrapped. The safest status update is therefore that Season 3 entered production in 2025 and remains scheduled for a late-2026 release window.

Returning cast
Netflix has confirmed the return of the principal performers:
- Devrim Lingnau as Elisabeth;
- Philip Froissant as Franz;
- Melika Foroutan; and
- Johannes Nussbaum.
The production announcement also lists Josephine Thiesen and Runa Greiner among the returning ensemble, alongside Lingnau, Froissant, Foroutan, and Nussbaum. Netflix’s announcement includes Dejan Bućin and other performers in the production cast information, but it does not provide a complete character-by-character list for every returning actor.
New cast members and characters
Netflix has announced five new named roles for the final season:

The announcement does not say how much screen time these characters will receive or whether every new role will appear throughout all six episodes. It is also too early to treat unannounced casting rumors as confirmed.
What will Season 3 be about?
Netflix’s official synopsis begins after the Sardinian War. Franz returns traumatized and weighed down by the deaths of thousands of young men. Elisabeth tries to support her husband while advocating for what she believes is right for the empire, but she encounters resistance at court.

Elisabeth’s health is also declining. The synopsis says that she is forced to leave Vienna and embark on an unexpected adventure. During the six-part finale, she meets someone whose arrival will permanently change her life—and the future of Europe.
Netflix has not named that person in the official synopsis. Although the newly announced Count Andrássy is an obvious subject of speculation, the available announcement does not confirm that he is the unnamed figure. Any identification should be treated as historical inference, not as an official plot detail.

The reference to the Sardinian War places the opening of Season 3 in the aftermath of the 1859 conflict involving the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia, supported by France. The war left Austria facing political and military consequences, providing the backdrop for Franz’s trauma and Elisabeth’s conflict with the imperial court.
The Empress is a dramatized historical series, not a documentary account. Real events from Elisabeth’s later life may help viewers understand the period, but they should not automatically be treated as confirmed Season 3 storylines.
Historical events that are not confirmed as Season 3 plot points
- the Austro-Hungarian Compromise;
- Maximilian’s venture in Mexico; and
- Elisabeth’s assassination in 1898.
Elisabeth’s real-life biography ended in 1898, but that fact alone does not prove that the series will depict her death in its final season. Netflix has confirmed a final season, not the precise historical endpoint the drama will reach.
