Hints for Connections #599
Here are the clues from gentlest to most revealing:
#1 Best Overall
- Yellow: Think of a quality or presence that cannot be physically held.
- Green: Think of food and drink commonly associated with watching or attending a game.
- Blue: These words can be followed by “on” when someone will not stop discussing a subject.
- Purple: Look for words that begin with the names of European capital cities.
Extra nudges
For the yellow group, consider words describing an atmosphere, impression or surrounding presence. The green group includes three familiar game-day foods and one drink. For blue, try placing on after each word. For purple, focus on the beginnings of the words rather than their complete meanings: some start with a capital city hidden in plain sight.
NYT Connections #599 answers
| Category | Words |
|---|---|
| GAME DAY FARE | BEER, DIP, PIZZA, WINGS |
| INTANGIBLE QUALITY | AIR, AURA, HALO, VIBE |
| KEEP GOING ON ABOUT, WITH “ON” | DWELL, HARP, INSIST, LINGER |
| STARTING WITH EUROPEAN CAPITALS | BERNIE, PARISH, RIGATONI, ROMEO |
How the four groups work
Yellow: INTANGIBLE QUALITY
AIR, AURA, HALO and VIBE can each describe an intangible quality, atmosphere or impression surrounding a person or place. You cannot literally hold any of them.
HALO is the likely distraction here. It can evoke angels, which may encourage you to group it with HARP and WINGS. In the intended solution, however, HALO belongs with the less concrete descriptions AIR, AURA and VIBE.
Green: GAME DAY FARE
BEER, DIP, PIZZA and WINGS are familiar food-and-drink choices for watching sports or attending a game. The category is about the kind of casual fare associated with game day, not a narrower type of cuisine.
WINGS creates the biggest overlap in the grid. Alongside HALO and HARP, it can suggest an angelic theme. But once the food connection becomes clear, WINGS is the word that completes this group.
Blue: KEEP GOING ON ABOUT, WITH “ON”
The four words form phrases when followed by on:
- dwell on
- harp on
- insist on
- linger on
These expressions can describe continuing to discuss, emphasize or remain focused on something. This is a grammatical category rather than a group based on a shared object or topic, which makes it easier to overlook.
Rank #3
Purple: STARTING WITH EUROPEAN CAPITALS
Each word begins with the name of a European capital:
- BERN + IE = BERNIE
- PARIS + H = PARISH
- RIGA + TONI = RIGATONI
- ROME + O = ROMEO
The full words are not themselves capital-city references. The trick is to spot the capital at the beginning of each ordinary word: Bern, Paris, Riga and Rome.

The puzzle’s most tempting false lead is an angelic grouping involving HALO, HARP and WINGS. That association is understandable, but it leaves the group one word short and uses words needed elsewhere. The correct move is to place WINGS with BEER, DIP and PIZZA, then use AIR, AURA, HALO and VIBE for the intangible-quality group.
Rank #4
The blue group is also easy to miss because its members do not share a straightforward subject. They become connected only when paired with on. The purple group works similarly through word beginnings: BERNIE, PARISH, RIGATONI and ROMEO look unrelated until the hidden capital names are separated from the remaining letters.
