Released during Disney Animation’s centennial celebrations, Wish deliberately looks backward and forward at once. Its story, songs, character designs, and watercolor-inspired computer animation draw on a century of Disney traditions, while its central conflict asks a distinctly modern question: does surrendering personal freedom for the promise of security actually make a community better?

What is Wish about?
Asha lives in Rosas, a kingdom founded by King Magnifico. The kingdom attracts people from many places because Magnifico offers to safeguard their wishes. Residents voluntarily entrust their deepest hopes to him, believing that the king’s knowledge and magical abilities will eventually allow those wishes to be granted.
When Asha applies to become Magnifico’s apprentice, she expects to find a wise and benevolent protector. Instead, she discovers that the king keeps most wishes locked away and has no intention of granting many of them. Magnifico argues that the wishes are too dangerous, impractical, or destabilizing to release. Asha sees something more troubling: the people of Rosas have given up the ability to act on their own aspirations, and Magnifico has made himself the sole authority over their futures.
After making a desperate wish of her own, Asha summons Star, a small cosmic force with extraordinary transformative powers. Star’s arrival brings magic, chaos, and renewed possibility to Rosas. With help from her friends and fellow citizens, Asha tries to return the wishes to the people while confronting Magnifico’s increasingly authoritarian response.
The film is therefore more than a conventional battle between a heroic young woman and an evil king. Its main conflict concerns ownership and agency. Magnifico believes that centralized control prevents people from harming themselves or one another. Asha believes that a protected dream is not the same thing as a lived one. That tension gives the fairy-tale premise its strongest interpretive dimension, although Wish should be understood as a fantasy story rather than a direct political allegory.
Asha, Magnifico, Star, and Valentino
Asha
Voiced by Ariana DeBose, Asha is an idealistic, quick-thinking 17-year-old whose challenge to the kingdom’s system begins with personal disappointment and grows into a communal cause. She is not simply wishing for a better life; she is trying to convince other people that they should be allowed to participate in shaping their own lives.
King Magnifico
Chris Pine voices Magnifico, the ruler of Rosas and guardian of its collected wishes. His appeal depends on the idea that people are safer when a knowledgeable leader makes difficult decisions for them. That argument initially gives him more complexity than a purely random villain. As the story progresses, however, his fear of losing control overwhelms his claim to be acting solely for the public good.
Rank #2
Star
Star is a small, energetic cosmic presence rather than a conventional speaking sidekick. The character functions as the physical embodiment of possibility: Star’s magic changes the world around Asha and helps reveal what the people of Rosas have suppressed. Star also gives the film one of its clearest visual links to the traditional Disney wish motif.
Valentino
Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, supplies much of the comic relief. Alan Tudyk voices the character, continuing the actor’s long association with prominent supporting roles in Disney Animation. Valentino is not the story’s thematic engine, but his presence keeps the film’s more serious ideas accessible to younger viewers.

Wish was released as Disney Animation marked 100 years of filmmaking. Disney presented the movie as an original story created to celebrate the studio’s visual and musical legacy—not as an adaptation of one particular earlier film.
That distinction matters. The film uses familiar fairy-tale ingredients—a young heroine, a magical kingdom, a powerful ruler, a wish, and a battle over the future—but combines them into a new setting and plot. It also includes visual and character references that recall earlier Disney productions. The broad strategy is well established in the film’s centennial framing, but individual apparent references should not automatically be treated as officially confirmed allusions.
The result is a movie interested in Disney tradition as both inheritance and responsibility. The familiar idea that “any dream can come true” is given a social dimension: what happens when an entire population hands its dreams to someone else? In that sense, the centennial celebration is not limited to nostalgia. It also turns the studio’s most recognizable promise into the subject of the story.
Why the animation looks different
One of Wish’s most distinctive production choices is its blend of modern 3-D computer animation and a watercolor storybook appearance. The film retains the depth, movement, lighting, and visual effects associated with contemporary digital animation, but its surfaces and backgrounds are designed to evoke hand-painted Disney concept art and classic illustrated fairy tales.
Production designer Michael Giaimo and visual-effects supervisor Kyle Odermatt were associated with this hybrid visual approach. Rather than reproduce the look of an older Disney film exactly, the design uses texture and painterly softness to suggest the studio’s history while remaining a contemporary computer-animated feature.
This choice is especially appropriate for a story about wishes. Rosas often looks less like a realistic place than a storybook kingdom being brought to life. The style also makes the film’s centennial purpose visible: the movie’s past is not only referenced in dialogue or marketing, but built into the way its world is presented.
The music: seven new songs and “This Wish”
Wish is a full Disney musical, with seven new songs written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice. The songwriting combines contemporary pop influences with the character-driven storytelling expected from a Disney animated musical.
“This Wish” is the film’s signature song and the clearest expression of Asha’s decision to act rather than passively wait for authority to approve her hopes. Its role is narrative as well as promotional: it articulates the moment when Asha’s private frustration becomes a public commitment.

The official “Wish (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)” listing on Amazon Music identifies a 12-song release of approximately 36 minutes, dated November 17, 2023. That listing is evidence of a digital soundtrack release; it should not be interpreted as confirmation of a physical CD edition. The soundtrack is a natural companion for viewers who particularly enjoy the film’s songs, but availability and format can vary by territory and service.
Where to watch or own Wish
Wish received its U.S. theatrical release on November 22, 2023. Disney’s official U.S. Disney+ page lists the film for streaming, although catalog availability, subscription requirements, and regional access can change. Check the current Disney+ listing in your country before planning a viewing.
The film also received a home-video release through Walt Disney Home Entertainment on January 23, 2024. Readers who want a permanent copy, a gift, or an option that does not depend on streaming access can check the current listing for a Wish (2023) DVD. Edition, seller, price, and availability should be verified at the time of purchase; the existence of a home-video release does not guarantee that every format remains in stock.
Is Wish suitable for children?
Disney classifies Wish as PG and positions it as entertainment for children and families. Parents should expect fantasy peril, magical confrontations, mild action, and moments in which characters are threatened by a powerful antagonist. The film’s emotional conflict can also be significant for younger viewers because it involves the loss of hopes, the misuse of authority, and a community confronting its ruler.
Rank #4
There is no need to treat the film as a documentary or a realistic political drama. Its themes are communicated through songs, visual magic, comedy, and fairy-tale conflict. For most families, the most useful preparation is simply to explain that the story asks whether people should surrender their dreams to a leader who promises to protect them.
Reception, awards, and commercial context
The Golden Globes’ official film record lists Wish as a 2024 nominee for Best Motion Picture—Animated. The record shows one nomination and zero wins. It is therefore inaccurate to say that the film won a Golden Globe, and the nomination should not be confused with a separate award for “This Wish.”
The Numbers reports an estimated production budget of $200 million and worldwide box-office performance of approximately 1.3 times that budget. Those figures support describing the film’s commercial response as underwhelming relative to its reported cost, but they do not by themselves establish the studio’s final profit or loss. Marketing expenses, distribution arrangements, theater splits, home entertainment, and streaming value all complicate a simple budget-versus-box-office calculation.

What makes Wish worth revisiting?
Wish is most interesting when viewed as a film about the responsibilities that come with hope. Its plot is built from recognizable Disney ingredients, but its central question is unusually direct: can a community remain free if its people surrender their wishes to a ruler who decides when those wishes are safe?
Best Value
The answer is presented through a colorful musical adventure rather than a philosophical drama. Asha’s rebellion, Star’s magic, Valentino’s comedy, and the watercolor-inspired design keep the movie accessible as family entertainment. At the same time, the story gives older viewers a useful lens through which to consider the difference between protecting people and controlling them.
As a centennial film, Wish does not attempt to recreate one specific classic. Instead, it assembles a visual language, musical tradition, and familiar emotional promise into an original story. Its success as a celebration of Disney history will depend on how much a viewer enjoys those echoes, but its underlying premise remains clear: a wish has meaning only when the person who made it still has the freedom to pursue it.
