Transformers has no single television timeline. The most useful chronological order is release order: begin with The Transformers in 1984, then follow the Japanese G1 anime, the Beast Era, the Unicron Trilogy, later standalone reboots and the streaming-era productions. The list below covers regular TV series and major anime, while one-off OVAs, re-edits, digital shorts and announced projects appear separately.

Chronological release-order list

The table below covers conventional Transformers television series and major anime productions, ordered by their first release rather than by fictional chronology. Where two shows overlap in calendar years, the order reflects their debut year, not an attempt to place individual episodes inside one another.

# Series Release Production and format Continuity or significance
1 The Transformers 1984–1987 U.S./Japanese animated series The foundational G1 cartoon: Autobots versus Decepticons, with characters such as Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and Starscream.
2 Transformers: The Headmasters 1987–1988 Japanese anime A Japanese G1 continuation, produced as a substantially new series rather than simply another U.S. season.
3 Transformers: Super-God Masterforce 1988–1989 Japanese anime A separate Japanese G1 production with its own cast, story and episode run.
4 Transformers: Victory 1989 Japanese anime A Japanese G1 series centered on Star Saber and the conflict between the Cybertrons and Destrons.
5 Beast Wars: Transformers 1996–1999 North American computer-animated series The 52-episode, three-season centerpiece of the Beast Era, starring the Maximals and Predacons.
6 Beast Wars II: Super Life-Form Transformers 1998–1999 Japanese anime A separate Japanese Beast Era companion series, released during the North American Beast Wars run.
7 Beast Wars Neo 1999 Japanese anime The second major Japanese Beast Era companion production, following Beast Wars II in release order.
8 Beast Machines: Transformers 1999–2000 North American computer-animated series The North American follow-up to Beast Wars, with a noticeably different visual style and more thematic approach.
9 Transformers: Robots in Disguise 2001–2002 Japanese series localized internationally Originally released in Japan as Car Robots; the Western localization represents a practical post-Beast-era reboot.
10 Transformers: Armada 2002–2003 Animated series The first installment of the Unicron Trilogy, introducing the Mini-Cons and a new continuity.
11 Transformers: Energon 2004–2005 Animated series The second Unicron Trilogy production and a separate series in its own right.
12 Transformers: Cybertron 2005–2006 Japanese-origin animated series localized for other markets The third Unicron Trilogy show. Its continuity relationship with Armada and Energon was handled differently across markets and localizations.
13 Transformers: Animated 2007–2009 2-D animated series A stylistically distinct continuity developed by Hasbro and Cartoon Network; its U.S. debut was in 2008, although release and episode presentation varied by market.
14 Transformers: Prime 2010–2013 Full-CGI animated series A Hasbro Studios production for The Hub. It opened with a five-part introductory miniseries before moving into regular weekly episodes.
15 Transformers: Rescue Bots 2011–2016 Younger-skewing animated series A separate, younger-audience production launched alongside the Prime-era brand push; it is not a season of Prime.
16 Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy 2019–2021 Preschool/younger-audience animated series A follow-up centered on training new recruits. Its placement after Rescue Bots is based on release date.
17 Transformers: Robots in Disguise 2015–2017 Animated series A completely different production from the 2001 show, generally associated with the Prime/Aligned-era family.
18 Transformers: Cyberverse 2018–2021 Animated series A new production tied to its own toy and media push, not a continuation of the 2015 Robots in Disguise.
19 Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy 2020–2021 Streaming animated trilogy A distinct modern continuity released in three chapters. The opening chapter, Siege, was released by Hasbro and Netflix in July 2020 as a six-episode series.
20 Transformers: EarthSpark Launched in 2022 Animated series A rebooted/new continuity co-produced with Nickelodeon and eOne, about a new generation of Transformers born on Earth and a human family that welcomes them. Confirm the current end date and regional release status when publishing.

What the continuity labels mean

Transformers does not have one television continuity that runs uninterrupted from 1984 to the present. The franchise repeatedly reinterprets its characters, setting and mythology. Release order is therefore the reliable way to answer when each production appeared; it is not a single in-universe watch order.

The original U.S./Japanese G1 partnership

The Transformers is the familiar starting point for most viewers, but the Japanese productions that followed it should not automatically be treated as U.S. seasons four, five and six. The Headmasters began airing in Japan on July 3, 1987, and concluded on March 25, 1988. It was produced as a substantially new Japanese anime, with character concepts and continuity assumptions that differ from the U.S. cartoon’s treatment of the Headmasters.

Super-God Masterforce and Victory continue the Japanese G1 production tradition while telling their own stories. Masterforce has its own cast and premise, while Victory shifts the focus to Star Saber and the Cybertron–Destron conflict. They belong together as Japanese G1-era productions, but they are best listed as separate series rather than collapsed into a single long show.

The Beast Era

Beast Wars replaced the traditional vehicle-heavy presentation with Maximals and Predacons who transformed into animals. Its computer animation was a major change from the earlier 2-D cartoons, and its 52 episodes were spread across three seasons from 1996 to 1999.

The North American series is generally connected to the broad G1/Beast continuity, but that does not mean every G1 production fits into it cleanly episode by episode. Japan also produced Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo as separate companion anime. Their overlapping dates with the North American show are not a reason to interleave episodes; place them by their own first-release years. Beast Machines then follows Beast Wars as the principal North American continuation, although its visual and thematic presentation is markedly different.

The Unicron Trilogy

Armada, Energon and Cybertron are commonly grouped as the Unicron Trilogy. They should still appear as three individual entries because each is a separate production with its own release period. The trilogy begins a new continuity rather than continuing the G1 or Beast Wars story directly.

  • PERSONAL MEMORIES: Create meaningful wall decor from wedding photos, family portraits, vacation snapshots, or artistic images

For viewers comparing versions from different countries, the relationship among the three shows can be less straightforward than the umbrella name suggests. Localization and market-specific continuity decisions affected how the productions were presented. The safest reading order is still their release order: Armada, then Energon, then Cybertron.

Standalone interpretations and the Aligned-era family

Transformers: Animated is best approached as its own stylistic interpretation. Its 2-D design, tone and character treatment distinguish it from both the Unicron Trilogy and the later CGI productions. The 2007–2009 release window can look inconsistent in international lists because the U.S. debut was in 2008 and some material was released or presented differently by market.

Transformers: Prime belongs to the franchise’s commonly identified Aligned continuity family. Its rollout started with a five-part introductory miniseries and continued as a regular full-CGI series. Rescue Bots launched during the same broader brand period, but it was explicitly aimed at a younger audience and should be watched as a separate series rather than as a side season of Prime.

Rescue Bots Academy follows Rescue Bots in release order and focuses on training new recruits. The 2015 Robots in Disguise series is another distinct production, generally presented as a follow-up within the Prime/Aligned-era family. That family connection does not make it interchangeable with the 2001 show, which originated in Japan as Car Robots.

The rebooted and streaming-era shows

Cyberverse is a new series, not a continuation of 2015 Robots in Disguise. War for Cybertron Trilogy is likewise its own modern animated continuity, structured as three streaming chapters rather than as a conventional long-running broadcast series.

EarthSpark moves in another direction again. Its premise introduces a new generation of Transformers born on Earth and places a human family at the center of their arrival. It should not be inserted as a direct season after Cyberverse or War for Cybertron Trilogy. Since current availability and completion status can differ by territory and publication date, use 2022 as its launch anchor and verify the latest official listing before adding an end date.

The 1986 animated film: where it belongs

The Transformers: The Movie is not included in the TV-only chronology. In broad G1 release order, it falls between the second and third television seasons. If you are watching the original cartoon as a complete G1 experience, the practical placement is after season two and before season three.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That placement explains why some general Transformers timelines appear to have a film between the first two blocks of television episodes. It does not make the film a television series, so it remains outside the numbered list above.

Supplemental chronology: productions that are not regular TV seasons

These entries matter to a complete animation history, but they should be labeled separately from conventional television series.

Production Release How to classify it
Transformers: Zone 1990 A one-episode Japanese animated OVA/special, not a conventional multi-season TV series.
Transformers Generation 2 1990s broadcast era A re-edited or repackaged presentation of G1 material with additional CGI presentation elements, rather than a wholly new Transformers narrative series.
Transformers: Robotmasters 2004 DVD-only or short-form Japanese material; include it in an expanded animation appendix, not the main TV list.
Transformers: Universe 2008–2009 Digital shorts or online supplemental material, not a conventional television season.
Triple Combination: Transformers Go! 2013–2014 A Japanese DVD/short-form production that was not a conventional internationally distributed television season.
Transformers: BotBots Announced in 2021 Hasbro announced a 20-episode Netflix animated comedy series. A definitive release chronology should verify completed public release and U.S. availability before counting it as an aired entry.
Transformers One: New Adventures 2025 A 14-episode toy stop-motion YouTube series inspired by the Transformers One film and described as going beyond the existing canon. It belongs in a web/digital appendix.

Physical media for a chronological watch-through

Physical releases can be useful when a series is split among changing digital catalogs, but the edition and territory matter. The G1 collection noted above is the clearest starting point. There are also documented complete-series releases for Transformers Animated and Beast Wars, while Transformers: Prime has documented DVD and Blu-ray releases. Verify the exact format, region and current inventory before purchasing; the existence of a release does not guarantee that every edition remains in stock.

Collectors may also encounter toy lines associated with Cyberverse, EarthSpark and BotBots. Transformers has historically paired animation with transforming action figures, beginning with the original 1984 launch. Match the product line to the show and release year, because similarly named figures can come from different continuities and later reissues.

Which order should you use?

For a complete franchise history

Follow the numbered table from The Transformers through EarthSpark, then consult the supplemental table for specials, digital projects and announced productions. This gives the clearest view of how the brand moved from 2-D G1 animation to Japanese anime, CGI Beast Era storytelling, the Unicron Trilogy and successive reboots.

For continuity rather than release history

  • G1 and the Beast Era: Start with The Transformers, then move to Beast Wars and Beast Machines if you want the broad North American lineage. Treat Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce and Victory as a separate Japanese G1 branch.
  • Unicron Trilogy: Watch Armada, Energon and Cybertron in that order, while remembering that localization affects how their continuity is explained.
  • Standalone show: Watch Transformers: Animated on its own terms; it does not require the preceding shows.
  • Prime-era family: Begin with Prime, then consider Rescue Bots, Rescue Bots Academy and 2015 Robots in Disguise as related-era productions rather than as one uninterrupted series.
  • Modern reboots: Treat Cyberverse, War for Cybertron Trilogy and EarthSpark as separate modern interpretations.

Important title traps

  • Robots in Disguise has two entries. The 2001 show is the Western localization of Japan’s Car Robots. The 2015 show is a different production associated with the Prime-era family.
  • Headmasters is not simply the U.S. cartoon’s next season. It is a separate Japanese continuation with different production and continuity assumptions.
  • Generation 2 is not a new animated story. It repackaged G1 material with additional presentation elements.
  • Overlapping years do not indicate a shared weekly schedule. Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo are separate Japanese productions released during or after the North American Beast Wars period.
  • Streaming and web projects need stricter labeling. A digital short, announced series or YouTube stop-motion project should not silently be counted as a conventional TV season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 1986 Transformers movie included in the TV-show chronology?

No. The 1986 animated film is a movie, not a TV show. In broad G1 release order, watch it after season two and before season three of The Transformers.

Are the 2001 and 2015 Robots in Disguise shows the same series?

No. The 2001 series originated in Japan as Car Robots and was localized as Robots in Disguise. The 2015 Robots in Disguise is a separate production associated with the Prime-era family.

Is Transformers: The Headmasters just season three of the original cartoon?

Not exactly. Headmasters is a substantially new Japanese production and is best treated as a separate Japanese G1 continuation, even though it follows the original cartoon era in release order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does chronological mean in-universe story order?

This article uses chronological to mean first release order. Because Transformers contains multiple continuities, there is no single reliable in-universe order for every show and anime.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Use release order for the master list, not a supposed single Transformers timeline. Start with The Transformers, keep the Japanese G1 and Beast Era anime as distinct productions, and treat each later reboot or streaming project as its own continuity unless the series explicitly establishes a connection.
