News coverage identified the condition as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a progressive neurological disease in which motor neurons degenerate. As the disease advances, it can cause increasing muscle weakness and may affect movement, speech, swallowing and breathing. The course varies, and general information about ALS cannot establish an individual patient’s prognosis. CBS News reported on Dane’s announcement and the medical context.
What symptoms did Eric Dane describe?
In his first major television interview about the diagnosis, which aired on Good Morning America on June 16, 2025, Dane told Diane Sawyer that he had first noticed weakness in his right hand more than a year earlier.
By the time of the interview, Dane said that his right side had completely stopped working and that he had only one functioning arm. He expressed concern about possibly losing function in his left hand and in his legs as well. Those details come from Dane’s own description during the interview and from ABC News’ account; they are not an independently published set of clinical measurements.
Dane remained hopeful and said he was fighting the disease as much as he could. He also spoke about his fear that ALS might prevent him from seeing his two teenage daughters grow up. His statements describe the emotional and physical reality he was facing, but they should not be converted into a specific medical prediction about how ALS would progress for him or for other people.

Did Eric Dane continue acting after his diagnosis?
Yes. When he announced the diagnosis, Dane said he expected to return to Euphoria. Later reporting described him as continuing to work and appearing in the show’s third season. Production, broadcast and streaming are separate milestones, however, so the current status of any season should be checked against HBO’s latest listings rather than inferred from the original announcement.
Dane was best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan—nicknamed “McSteamy”—on Grey’s Anatomy. He also played Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, starred in The Last Ship and appeared in films including Marley & Me and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. His career, sobriety, family life and fatherhood were also among the subjects he addressed in his memoir project.
What treatments or research was Eric Dane involved in?
By fall 2025, ABC News reported that Dane was using his public platform to raise awareness of ALS and research. The report said he had participated in a research study and was taking medication in the hope of slowing the disease’s progression.

The specific medication and study details should not be assumed from that report. There is also no basis for claiming that a particular treatment worked for Dane, cured ALS or would be appropriate for another person. ALS remains a progressive disease without a universal cure, while treatment and research options must be discussed with qualified medical professionals.
No reliable reporting in the available record establishes that Dane’s ALS was caused by a particular exposure, inherited mutation, medication or lifestyle factor.
When did Eric Dane die?
Eric Dane died on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 53. His family confirmed his death and said he had died after a courageous battle with ALS. The Associated Press also described Dane as an advocate for ALS awareness. Read the Associated Press report on Dane’s death.
Later reports attributed respiratory failure as the immediate cause of death and ALS as the underlying condition, citing information said to come from his death certificate. Because that formulation was reported secondhand through PEOPLE rather than verified from the certificate or another primary official record in this research, it is more accurate to describe it as a later reported account—not as an independently confirmed document finding.

Famous Last Words: Eric Dane and his final recorded interview
Dane recorded an interview for Netflix’s Famous Last Words in November 2025 with producer and longtime friend Brad Falchuk. The conversation was intentionally held for release after Dane’s death. Netflix released the program in February 2026, making it a posthumous presentation of a prerecorded interview—not an interview conducted after his death.
According to Netflix Tudum’s account, Dane discussed his family, sobriety, acting career, friendship, terminal illness and changing relationship with death. His final recorded message was addressed to his daughters. The program offers a documentary-style portrait of Dane’s reflections, but it should be understood in the context in which it was made: Dane knew the interview would not be broadcast until after his death.
Availability can vary by country and over time. Viewers should check Netflix for current regional access rather than assuming that the program is available everywhere.
Eric Dane’s forthcoming memoir
Dane’s perspective will continue in his posthumous memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments. Penguin Random House lists the book as a hardcover scheduled for publication on November 3, 2026, from The Open Field. The listed edition is 272 pages and carries ISBN 9780593995662.

The publisher’s description says the memoir reflects on Dane’s acting career, sobriety, family, fatherhood, ALS diagnosis and the meaning of living in the present. Because November 3, 2026 is a future publication date in the publisher’s listing, it should be described as forthcoming or scheduled—not as a book already available.
