What does Kara Robinson do now?

Robinson Chamberlain’s present-day work centers on public speaking, advocacy, education, and media. Her keynote and outreach topics include:

  • survivor resilience and empowerment;
  • trauma recovery and healing;
  • supporting victims and their loved ones;
  • ethical coverage of true-crime cases; and
  • ways professionals and communities can respond more supportively to survivors.

Her official biography also says that she creates social-media content, answers questions about her experience, discusses trauma healing, and speaks to groups around the country. That makes “survivor advocate and keynote speaker” a more accurate description of her current public role than “former police officer” alone.

Her work reflects several stages of her life after the 2002 case. She survived the abduction, later trained for a career in criminal justice, worked with victims and law enforcement, became a parent, and eventually began using her story as a platform for education and advocacy. That is why current coverage should present her as an adult with an ongoing professional mission—not only as the teenager whose escape made headlines.

Is Kara Robinson married, and how many children does she have?

Public biographies describe Robinson Chamberlain as married. Her current first-party biography says she has three children. Older third-party coverage described her as the mother of two boys, but that account is earlier and conflicts with the current information on her own website. The current first-party source is the stronger basis for reporting her present family size.

Robinson has written publicly about parenting after trauma, including the difficulty of responding to children’s intense emotions while managing trauma-related reactions and attachment wounds. Those discussions should be understood as her personal reflections, not as a diagnosis of her or her children. Her children’s names, ages, and private lives are not necessary to answer where she is now.

What happened to Kara Robinson in 2002?

On June 24, 2002, 15-year-old Kara Robinson was abducted at gunpoint from a friend’s front yard in Lexington County, South Carolina. Richard Evonitz took her to his apartment in the Columbia area, where he held and sexually assaulted her for approximately 18 hours.

Robinson escaped after Evonitz fell asleep. She then gave investigators unusually detailed information about the man who abducted her and the apartment where she had been held. Her account helped authorities identify Evonitz and move quickly to locate him.

Evonitz fled South Carolina and died by suicide in Sarasota, Florida, shortly after Robinson escaped, as authorities closed in. Sources differ by one day on whether his death occurred on June 26 or June 27, so the safest wording is that he killed himself in Florida soon afterward.

Investigators later connected Evonitz through forensic evidence to the murders of Sofia Silva and sisters Kristin and Kati Lisk in Virginia. The FBI’s account notes that Evonitz was never convicted in Robinson’s abduction because he died before a prosecution could take place.

How did the escape affect her later career?

Robinson remained connected to the law-enforcement agency involved in her case and later completed training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Her official biography describes several roles in criminal justice and victims’ services, including:

  • school-resource officer;
  • sex-crime and child-abuse investigator; and
  • victims’ advocate.

Those roles gave her professional experience alongside her personal experience as a survivor. She eventually left law enforcement after becoming a parent. Earlier coverage focused on her raising two sons and homeschooling them; that is historical reporting, not the best description of her current family situation.

Her career change does not mean that the case ceased to matter to her. Instead, her public work now combines knowledge of investigations and victim services with the perspective of someone who personally experienced the criminal-justice system as a child survivor.

Documentaries and films about Kara Robinson’s story

Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story

Oxygen’s 2021 documentary special, Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story, examines Robinson’s abduction, her approximately 18-hour captivity, her escape, and the information she provided to investigators. Robinson participated in the project, and Elizabeth Smart served as an executive producer. The two women have also spoken publicly about their friendship as fellow survivors.

Because this is a documentary featuring Robinson and her testimony, it should be distinguished from dramatized versions of events and from official investigative records. A documentary can provide firsthand context, but it is not itself a substitute for law-enforcement documents.

The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story

Lifetime’s The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story premiered on February 11, 2023. Robinson’s official media materials identify the film as a project connected to her story.

The Lifetime production is a dramatization. Scenes, dialogue, pacing, and composite or rearranged moments should therefore not automatically be treated as literal transcripts of what happened. For the clearest account, viewers should separate the film’s storytelling choices from Robinson’s first-person interviews and official investigative reporting.

Where can you watch the film?

Availability for the Lifetime film and the Oxygen documentary varies by country, platform, subscription package, and date. Recent U.S. listings have included streaming and digital rental or purchase options, including Amazon Video for the Lifetime film, but listings and prices can change. Check the current platform listing before renting or purchasing, and do not assume that availability in the United States applies elsewhere.

Further reading about the case

Readers looking for a book-length account can consider Into the Water by Diane Fanning. It is a third-party true-crime account concerning Richard Evonitz and the related investigation—not Kara Robinson’s own memoir. Because the subject includes sexual violence and murder, readers may want to review the book’s description and content warnings before choosing it.

As with the screen adaptations, a book about the case should be read alongside reliable primary reporting rather than treated as a replacement for Robinson’s own account or official records.

Why her current work matters

Robinson’s public message is not that a survivor simply “got over” trauma. Her work emphasizes that recovery can involve ongoing healing, relationships, parenthood, professional choices, and control over how one’s story is told.

That perspective is especially important in true-crime coverage. The most responsible account can acknowledge the seriousness of the crime without making the assault the entirety of Robinson’s identity. It can describe the verified investigative facts, identify what has been dramatized, protect the privacy of her family, and give attention to the adult survivor who chose to educate others.
