Victoria Season 4 was never officially canceled—but it was never commissioned either. ITV said in July 2021 that there were “no plans presently to film” another series, while leaving open the possibility of revisiting the drama. The show therefore remains an indefinite pause, not a confirmed permanent cancellation.
The main documented obstacle was the challenge of continuing with Jenna Coleman as an increasingly older Queen Victoria. Coleman said she was open to returning but wanted to wait until she was older, while creator Daisy Goodwin had already acknowledged that the principal roles would eventually need recasting.
Victoria has not been officially canceled—but Season 4 was never commissioned
Victoria ended after three series and 25 episodes, which aired on ITV from 2016 to 2019. ITV has not announced a fourth series, filming schedule, production date, or commissioning decision. However, the broadcaster also did not formally say that the drama was canceled.
The most accurate description is that Victoria Season 4 remains unmade and indefinitely paused. On July 25, 2021, ITV said there were “no plans presently to film Victoria,” while leaving open the possibility of revisiting the programme with its production team. That is different from an official cancellation.

The main publicly documented obstacle was timing: Jenna Coleman was concerned about playing a much older Queen Victoria convincingly while still in the role. Coleman said she remained open to returning, but wanted to wait until she was older rather than rely on extensive daily prosthetics to portray the later stages of Victoria’s life.
What happened to Victoria Season 4?
Series 3 covered roughly 1848 to 1851 and ended with Prince Albert collapsing after the Great Exhibition. That was not a definitive ending to Queen Victoria’s story. Historically, Albert lived until 1861, leaving approximately a decade of major events that the drama could still have explored.
The unresolved finale therefore appears to have been designed as a possible continuation point. It left the door open to a fourth series rather than closing the story with Victoria’s later reign or Albert’s death.
Yet the planned continuation never moved into production. ITV’s position in 2021 was that there were no current plans to film another series. No verified announcement in the available record has since confirmed a commission, a production date, recasting, filming, or a completed Season 4.
Why did Jenna Coleman want to wait?
The clearest explanation comes from Coleman herself. After Series 3, she described the future of the show as a break rather than an ending. In May 2019, she said the series would “take a break.” In August 2020, she said she was still open to returning and was waiting until she was older.
Her concern was the age gap between the actress and the historical figure. Victoria was only 18 when she became queen, and the existing series followed her through early adulthood and motherhood. A continuation would eventually need to portray Victoria as a middle-aged woman and, potentially, into her sixties.

Coleman said she could play the character into her sixties, but that there was a limit to how old she could portray Victoria naturally without spending hours each day in prosthetics. That practical and creative problem helps explain why the show was paused while Coleman remained in the title role.
This does not support the claim that Coleman simply quit. The documented comments show that she wanted a break, remained interested in returning, and was considering the right time to play an older Victoria.

Was the series going to recast Queen Victoria?
Recasting was discussed as a long-term possibility, but it never happened for Victoria. Creator Daisy Goodwin had said in March 2019 that she knew where the story was going and expected a fourth series to be “amazing.” She also acknowledged that the principal roles would eventually need to be recast because the characters’ ages would outgrow the original actors.
Goodwin’s position was not that Coleman had to be replaced immediately. She hoped the change would not happen too soon. Coleman had also mentioned Imelda Staunton as a possible successor, but Staunton was subsequently cast as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown.
There is no verified announcement that a new actress was formally hired to play Victoria in Season 4. Recasting was an idea for managing the show’s historical timeline, not evidence that production had entered an active casting stage.
Did ITV officially cancel Victoria?
No. ITV’s reported statement on July 25, 2021, said there were “no plans presently to film Victoria” and suggested the series might be revisited with the production team at a later point. The statement confirmed that a fourth series was not in active development at that time, but it did not use the word “canceled” or declare the programme permanently over.

The distinction matters because headlines and search results often compress an indefinite pause into a cancellation. Based on ITV’s documented wording, the status is more precisely:
- Series 1–3: completed and available as the existing run.
- Series 4: not commissioned, not filmed, and not released.
- ITV’s public position: no plans presently to film it, with a possibility of revisiting the show left open.
- Permanent cancellation: not formally announced in the cited record.
ITVX’s current listing identifies Victoria as an ITV series starring Jenna Coleman, while current reporting identifies the available run as Series 1 through Series 3.
Was low ratings the reason Victoria stopped?
There is no confirmed evidence in the cited ITV statement that low ratings caused the pause. ITV did not publicly identify ratings, budget pressure, a production dispute, or a cast conflict as the reason for the lack of a fourth series.
That means claims such as “ITV canceled Victoria because of poor ratings” go beyond the verified record. Ratings may be discussed in speculation about television renewals, but they should not be presented as the confirmed explanation here.
The evidence supports a more limited conclusion: the series was not in active development, while Coleman’s comments point to the difficulty of continuing with an older version of Victoria and the need to choose the right time—or eventually a different lead actress—to move forward.
How much story was left for Season 4?
A considerable amount. Series 3 ends around 1851, after the Great Exhibition, when Prince Albert collapses. Albert did not die until 1861, so the series had roughly ten years of historical material between its finale and his death.

A continuation could have dramatized later developments in Victoria’s marriage, family, political position, and public life, followed by the effect of Albert’s death on the queen and the country. The creators had not reached the natural endpoint of Victoria’s reign; they had reached a point at which the actors’ ages and the production’s long-term casting strategy became increasingly important.
That is why the Season 3 ending should not be treated as proof that the writers ran out of material. The unresolved collapse was compatible with a planned continuation, and reporting describes it as a deliberate setup for a possible future installment.

It cannot be ruled out solely from the wording of ITV’s 2021 statement, because ITV left open the possibility of revisiting the drama. But there is no verified evidence in the available record of an active revival. No production date, commission, filming schedule, or confirmed returning cast has been announced.
If the story were revived after a long gap, the age issue would probably need to be addressed in one of two ways:
- Return with Jenna Coleman after a time jump: This would preserve the original central performance but might require careful makeup, prosthetics, writing, and staging to make the older Victoria believable.
- Recast Victoria and possibly other principal roles: This would make it easier to portray the queen across later decades, but would change the emotional continuity established by the first three series.
Goodwin had already anticipated that recasting would eventually be necessary. What remains unknown is whether the creative team, ITV, and the cast would ever decide that a revival was worth making under those conditions.

The premise needs correcting: Victoria was not formally canceled according to ITV’s documented statement. Instead, the series entered an indefinite pause after three completed series.

The best-supported explanation is a combination of timing and the challenge of aging the title character. Coleman wanted the show to take a break and was open to returning later, but she questioned how long she could play an older Victoria without extensive prosthetics. The creators had more history to tell and had discussed eventual recasting, yet ITV confirmed in 2021 that there were no present plans to film another series.
So the final status is straightforward: Victoria Season 4 was never commissioned and remains unmade; ITV has not publicly characterized it as a permanent cancellation.
Sources and status notes
The episode and availability information is reflected in ITVX’s programme listing. The reported ITV statement, Coleman’s comments about taking a break and portraying an older Victoria, and Goodwin’s comments about the story and eventual recasting are summarized in Radio Times’ reporting on the show’s status. The historical gap after the Series 3 finale and the interpretation of the ending as a continuation point are discussed by TV Insider.
