The simplest chronological order is the same as the films’ release order:
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
- Captain America: Civil War (2016)
- Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
This four-film sequence follows the Captain America mantle from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson. It is the focused order for the Captain America-branded MCU movies—not a complete list of every MCU film in which Steve Rogers appears.
The Captain America movies in chronological order
1. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Release date: July 22, 2011
Runtime: 124 minutes, according to Marvel’s official movie-collection listing
Set primarily during World War II, The First Avenger is the natural starting point. Steve Rogers volunteers for a secret military research project and becomes the super-soldier Captain America. The film establishes his relationships with Peggy Carter and Bucky Barnes, as well as his conflict with HYDRA and the Red Skull.
#1 Best Overall
- Steve Rogers wields the shield in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Then it?s Sam Wilson who unleashes his wings and takes up the mantle in Captain America: Brave New World. Join them as they fight evil global forces with this action-packed 4-movie set.
Although it was the fifth MCU feature released theatrically, its main story takes place earlier than the events of the other Captain America films. It provides the essential background for Steve, Bucky, the Captain America identity, and the unresolved history that drives later stories.
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Release date: April 4, 2014
Runtime: 136 minutes on Marvel’s official page; Disney+ lists it at approximately 2 hours 19 minutes
The Winter Soldier moves the story into the modern MCU, after the events of The Avengers. Steve is attempting to adapt to modern Washington, D.C., when a new threat forces him to confront a painful connection to his past: Bucky Barnes has returned as the Winter Soldier.
The film also introduces Sam Wilson as Falcon. Sam’s partnership with Steve becomes one of the most important relationships in the Captain America storyline, making this chapter essential preparation for the eventual transfer of the mantle.

3. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Release date: May 6, 2016
Runtime: 147 minutes on Marvel’s official page; Disney+ lists it at approximately 2 hours 31 minutes
Rank #2
Civil War follows the political fallout from the Avengers’ actions, particularly the destruction and civilian casualties associated with superhero activity. Governments want the Avengers placed under official oversight, while Steve Rogers is increasingly concerned that political control could prevent the team from acting when people need help.
Bucky’s reappearance makes the dispute personal. Steve’s decision to protect his old friend brings him into direct conflict with Tony Stark and divides the Avengers into opposing sides. Watching The Winter Soldier first is especially important because it explains why Steve’s loyalty to Bucky is so powerful and why the conflict in Civil War becomes more than a disagreement about policy.
4. Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
Release date: February 14, 2025
Runtime: approximately two hours on Disney+
Brave New World is the latest Captain America-branded MCU feature film covered by this guide. It does not center on Steve Rogers. Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is now the Captain America, following the character’s development from Falcon into the new holder of the shield.
The story begins after Sam meets newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross and becomes involved in an international incident. For the clearest understanding of how Sam accepts the Captain America identity, watch the optional Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before this film.

Why the chronological order and release order are the same
For the four Captain America-branded movies, there is no complicated rearrangement: they were released in the same sequence as the recommended focused story order—2011, 2014, 2016, and 2025.
The chronological question becomes more complicated only when you add MCU ensemble films and television. Steve Rogers appears in major entries such as The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Those films are not included in the four-film list because they are not Captain America-branded features.

You can watch the four films by themselves, but the following additions make the continuity easier to follow:
- Watch The Avengers before The Winter Soldier. Marvel describes The Winter Soldier as taking place after the catastrophic events in New York involving the Avengers. It shows the world Steve is trying to navigate after becoming a modern-day hero.
- Watch Avengers: Age of Ultron before Civil War. Civil War is shaped by political pressure following another major Avengers incident, and Age of Ultron supplies much of that context.
- Watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before Brave New World. This six-episode Disney+ series follows Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes after Avengers: Endgame and directly explores Sam’s eventual assumption of the Captain America mantle.
A practical context-first sequence is therefore:
The First Avenger → The Avengers → The Winter Soldier → Avengers: Age of Ultron → Civil War → The Falcon and the Winter Soldier → Brave New World
For strict MCU continuity, remember that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier follows Avengers: Endgame. You do not need every intervening MCU title to understand the Captain America plot, but watching Endgame gives additional context for the post-Steve Rogers status quo.
Rank #4
- As he takes on the mantle of Captain America, Sam Wilson soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident. In a race against time, Sam must unravel a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Focused marathon or wider MCU watch?
| What you want | What to watch |
|---|---|
| A quick Captain America movie marathon | The First Avenger → The Winter Soldier → Civil War → Brave New World |
| More context for the first three Captain America films | Add The Avengers before The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron before Civil War |
| The clearest Steve-to-Sam transition | Watch the four films and add The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before Brave New World |
| A broader MCU chronology | Use the focused sequence as a starting point, then add the relevant Avengers films and other MCU entries rather than treating the four Captain America titles as the complete MCU story |
Where to watch the Captain America movies
Official Disney+ pages identify The First Avenger, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Brave New World as movie titles on the service in the researched U.S.-oriented listings. Streaming catalogs change, and availability can differ by country, subscription, and date, so check the Disney+ title page for your region before starting the marathon.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a six-episode Disney+ series, not a movie. If you include it, treat it as optional television context between Civil War and Brave New World.
Owning the films
For viewers who prefer not to rely on changing streaming catalogs, Marvel’s official collection and home-media pages identify physical purchase paths for the Captain America films, including Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD formats. A Captain America movie collection is the most convenient option for a focused physical-media marathon, though format, edition, price, and retailer inventory should be checked before purchase.
The first film is also available through individual home-media purchase paths, including Captain America: The First Avenger Blu-ray editions. Availability and exact packaging may vary by retailer and region.
If you use retailer links for physical editions or digital purchases, disclose the affiliate relationship near the relevant links. Do not assume that a particular edition, retailer, or streaming catalog will remain available indefinitely.
What is not included in the four-film order?
The list is intentionally limited to feature films whose titles identify Captain America:
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Captain America: Civil War
- Captain America: Brave New World
Steve Rogers also appears in ensemble movies, including The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes also have an important story in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. These titles are useful additions, but including them would answer a broader question—how to watch Captain America’s MCU appearances—rather than the narrower question of how to watch the Captain America movies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Captain America: Brave New World a sequel to Steve Rogers’ story?
It continues the Captain America storyline but does not center on Steve Rogers. Anthony Mackie plays Sam Wilson, who has taken on the Captain America mantle.
Do I need to watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before Brave New World?
No. The four Captain America movies can be watched independently in the listed order. However, the six-episode series gives the clearest on-screen explanation of Sam Wilson’s transition from Falcon to Captain America.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is the chronological order different from the release order?
Not for the four Captain America-branded films. Their release sequence—2011, 2014, 2016, and 2025—is also the recommended focused story order.
Are The Avengers and Avengers: Endgame Captain America movies?
They are MCU ensemble films that feature Steve Rogers, but they are not Captain America-branded movies. Add them for wider MCU context rather than treating them as part of the four-film focused list.
The Bottom Line
For the focused marathon: watch Captain America: The First Avenger, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Brave New World in that order. Add The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when you want more context—especially the series before Sam Wilson’s full Captain America story in Brave New World.
