Sirens is a five-episode, TV-MA Netflix limited series about two sisters, a wealthy seaside estate, and the hidden costs of class mobility. Created by Molly Smith Metzler and adapted from her 2011 stage play Elemeno Pea, the series uses the myth of the sirens as a metaphor for the seduction of money, status, luxury, and belonging—not as confirmation of literal supernatural creatures.

Sirens is a five-episode, TV-MA Netflix limited series about class, caregiving, desire, and the cost of entering someone else’s world. Created and showrun by Molly Smith Metzler, the 2025 series follows Devon DeWitt, a struggling woman from Buffalo who travels to a wealthy seaside estate after becoming concerned about her younger sister Simone’s unusually close relationship with Simone’s employer, Michaela Kell.

The title is metaphorical rather than a confirmation of supernatural creatures. The series uses the idea of the Greek sirens to ask who is doing the luring, who gets blamed for desire, and whether the apparent seductress is actually the person with less power.

What is Sirens about?

Devon DeWitt is the older sister who has spent much of her life trying to hold things together. She returns from a personal downward spiral to deal with the needs of her family, including her father Bruce, a Navy veteran recently diagnosed with early-onset dementia. When Devon becomes alarmed by Simone’s new life as a personal assistant to the wealthy philanthropist Michaela “Kiki” Kell, she goes looking for her sister.

That search takes Devon to Cliff House, the Kells’ lavish seaside estate. Simone has gained access to an environment of private boats, elaborate parties, expensive clothes, charitable causes, and apparently effortless privilege. Devon sees something more troubling: a relationship in which affection, employment, status, and dependence are difficult to separate.

The story unfolds over one explosive weekend. Devon’s protective instincts make her the person most willing to challenge the household, but those instincts are not presented as entirely innocent. She is carrying resentment, fear, and the pressure of being the family fixer. Simone, meanwhile, has to decide whether Cliff House represents genuine freedom, another form of exploitation, or both at once.

Cast and characters

Character Actor Role in the story
Devon DeWitt Meghann Fahy Simone’s older sister, whose intervention at Cliff House drives the central conflict.
Simone DeWitt Milly Alcock Devon’s younger sister and Michaela’s personal assistant, caught between self-invention and dependence.
Michaela “Kiki” Kell Julianne Moore An ethereal philanthropist, animal activist, and social power center whose closeness with Simone concerns Devon.
Peter Kell Kevin Bacon Michaela’s billionaire husband, an old-money outdoorsman whose authority helps define the household.
Ethan Corbin III Glenn Howerton A wealthy neighbor, lifelong bachelor, and Peter’s friend whose trust-fund lifestyle intersects with Simone’s decisions.
Jose Felix Solis Publicly a gardener, but in practice Cliff House’s manager, security chief, surveillance operator, and Peter’s right-hand man.
Bruce DeWitt Bill Camp Devon and Simone’s father, whose dementia diagnosis intensifies the sisters’ unequal burdens.
Raymond Josh Segarra Devon’s on-and-off boyfriend in Buffalo.
Jordan Trevor Salter Ethan’s yacht captain and an object of attention among the island’s wealthy women.

The ensemble also includes Missy, the Kells’ seasonal housekeeper; Patrice, their longtime personal chef; and the Fates—Cloe, Lisa, and Astrid—three women devoted to Michaela’s preservation work who often speak and dress as a unit. Their coordinated presence reinforces the sense that Cliff House is not simply a home but a carefully maintained social order.

Is Sirens based on a book?

No. Sirens is based on Elemeno Pea, a full-length comedy by Molly Smith Metzler. She wrote the stage play in 2011 while studying at Juilliard, then adapted it for television.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction matters: there is no novel called Sirens that the series is adapting, and a script or anthology containing Elemeno Pea should not be described as an official Netflix companion book or screenplay. Concord Theatricals identifies the play as a roughly 90-minute work written for three women and two men. Authorized reading options include the play’s acting-edition, large-print, stage-manager, and ePlay formats, as well as the anthology Humana Festival 2011: The Complete Plays.

Readers who want to explore the story’s theatrical source can look for Molly Smith Metzler’s Elemeno Pea or the Humana Festival anthology. The stage version is the direct literary connection, not an unrelated mermaid story or a novelization of the Netflix series.

Cliff House: the estate as a social machine

Cliff House and its island are fictional, but the production used real New York locations. The grounds of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve in Lloyd Harbor, New York, represented the estate grounds, while Lloyd Harbor also stood in for the small beach town Devon enters while searching for Simone. Interior scenes were constructed on a soundstage at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn.

The locations do more than provide attractive scenery. Cliff House operates like a machine with rules:

  • Access is controlled. Wealth determines who belongs on the island, who is working there, and who must ask permission to enter its spaces.
  • Staff preserve the illusion of ease. Gardening, cooking, cleaning, transportation, security, and surveillance are made nearly invisible so that privilege can appear effortless.
  • Politeness conceals coercion. The household’s manners and rituals make control look like hospitality.
  • Charity softens power. Michaela’s philanthropic and animal-preservation work gives the estate a benevolent public image, even as the private structure remains unequal.

The production deliberately contrasts Devon and Simone’s Buffalo background with the culture, colors, rules, and politeness of Cliff House. This makes class visible as a way of speaking, dressing, moving, hosting, and understanding obligation—not merely as the amount of money in a bank account.

The major themes in Sirens

Class mobility and cultural dislocation

Simone’s new position offers more than a paycheck. It gives her access to a lifestyle that appears to erase the limitations of her old one. But entering a wealthy social world does not automatically make someone secure within it. The series keeps asking whether sudden wealth or proximity to wealth can change a person’s class identity, or whether it simply teaches that person to perform a different set of rules.

Devon’s discomfort is therefore not only sibling jealousy. She recognizes that Simone is entering a system whose language and expectations she may not control. At the same time, Devon’s perspective is limited by her own resentment and fear. The show does not give her an uncomplicated moral authority.

Gendered blame

The series questions why women are so often described as manipulative, seductive, or dangerous when powerful men and institutions create the conditions in which dependence becomes possible. The siren label can be directed at Michaela, Simone, or even the women surrounding them, but the label may obscure the larger structure of money, marriage, employment, and male authority.

Peter’s position is crucial to that question. Even when the plot appears to center on the bond between two women, the household’s hierarchy is shaped by the billionaire husband and the systems that serve him.

Caregiving and resentment

Devon’s responsibility toward Bruce and Simone makes her behavior understandable. She has learned to intervene, repair damage, and anticipate disaster. That identity can look like love from one angle and control from another.

Sirens treats caregiving as emotionally complicated rather than automatically virtuous. The person who carries the most responsibility may also feel entitled to decide what everyone else should do. Devon’s resentment does not cancel her concern, and her concern does not excuse every intrusion.

Wealth as performance

At Cliff House, privilege is presented through uniforms, parties, rituals, manners, seasonal staff, and carefully chosen charitable causes. These performances make unequal relationships feel natural. The estate’s calm surface depends on a great deal of labor and surveillance beneath it.

That is why Jose’s job is so revealing. He is publicly identified as a gardener, but his actual responsibilities include management, security, surveillance, and close service to Peter. The gap between his visible role and his real authority mirrors the show’s broader interest in appearances that conceal power.

Loyalty versus self-invention

Simone is not simply abandoning her family, nor is she simply being rescued by wealth. She is trying to become someone other than the person circumstances have required her to be. The difficult question is whether self-invention can remain genuinely hers when it depends on the approval of people who control her employment, housing, social access, and future.

Ambiguous agency

One of the series’ strongest choices is refusing to make Simone’s situation fit neatly into a victim-or-mastermind category. She may be manipulated, strategically adapting, or doing both. The same ambiguity applies to Michaela and Devon. Each woman has motives that can be understood without being accepted as harmless.

Spoilers: what the finale means

Stop here if you want to experience the ending without knowing its final image.

The five-episode story ends with Simone standing before Cliff House in a silk dress and looking toward the ocean from her newly acquired domain. Netflix’s official finale explanation frames the image as a victory that comes with casualties, while emphasizing that Simone herself was nearly a casualty.

The ending is deliberately ambiguous rather than a conventional mystery solution. It reverses the viewer’s assumptions about who possesses power and who is being lured. Simone’s final position can be read as liberation, succession, compromise, or a new version of the same system that endangered her. The series does not require a literal supernatural explanation for the title: its “sirens” are wealth, status, romantic attention, luxury, and belonging—the rewards that call people toward relationships they may not fully control.

That final image also complicates the idea that Simone merely escaped Cliff House. If she now occupies its center, the question becomes what she has gained, what she has lost, and whether possessing the estate changes the rules or makes her responsible for enforcing them.

The creative team’s adaptation strategy expands the intimate pressure of the stage play into a broader television world: Buffalo, the island, the estate grounds, the yacht, the staff hierarchy, and the surrounding wealthy community all become part of the conflict. The result keeps the play’s focus on social behavior while giving the class divide a physical geography.

What kind of series is Sirens?

Sirens is best approached as a compact social power drama with a deliberately unstable point of view. It is a strong fit for viewers interested in:

  • class mobility and the culture of extreme wealth;
  • sibling relationships shaped by unequal caregiving;
  • the difference between consent, dependence, and strategic adaptation;
  • female characters who cannot be reduced to victim or villain;
  • stories in which architecture, staff, etiquette, and money carry as much meaning as dialogue.

It is not a confirmed fantasy series about literal sirens, and it is not an adaptation of a novel. Its central mystery is social: who has the power to make another person want what they want, and who pays for that desire?
