In the days after her death, representatives from 101 Modeling publicly described the case as a robbery-and-homicide investigation. That was not the position stated by Albuquerque police. Police told PEOPLE, in reporting carried by Yahoo News, that the preliminary autopsy showed no trauma, had not established a cause of death, and that the case was being handled as a suspicious death rather than a confirmed homicide.
On August 20–21, 2024, TMZ reported, citing law-enforcement information, that authorities had determined the cause and manner of death to be an accidental drug overdose. The reports did not name the drug or drugs involved.
Why was the death initially called suspicious?
“Suspicious” described the investigative stage, not a finding that Leone had been murdered. At the time, the cause of death was undetermined and toxicology results were still pending. Police said the preliminary autopsy found no trauma and did not establish how she died.
That uncertainty helps explain why the case received different descriptions in early coverage. 101 Modeling characterized it publicly as a robbery and homicide, while Albuquerque police said there was no established homicide and described the death as suspicious or unusual pending further examination. The later reported accidental-overdose determination superseded that initial uncertainty.

There is no reliable basis in the reviewed reporting to state that Leone was murdered, that a home invasion occurred, or that theft was established. Those claims should not be presented as facts.
Timeline of the investigation
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| March 1, 2024 | Family members found Leone unresponsive in her Albuquerque apartment. |
| March 9–13 | Family members and representatives publicly announced her death. 101 Modeling described the matter as a robbery-and-homicide investigation. A GoFundMe organized by her stepfather, Mike Romero, sought funeral and related expenses. |
| March 13–15 | Albuquerque police disputed the homicide characterization. Police said the preliminary autopsy revealed no trauma and did not determine the cause of death; toxicology was awaited. |
| August 20–21 | Later reports said Albuquerque authorities classified the death as an accidental drug overdose. The specific substance was not disclosed in the sources reviewed. |
What is known about the final cause of death?
The publicly reported final classification was accidental drug overdose. That wording indicates an accidental manner of death; it does not establish suicide or intentional self-harm.
The available reports do not identify:
- the substance or substances involved;
- the concentration or toxicology levels;
- whether more than one substance contributed; or
- the full findings of the medical-investigator report.
It is therefore inaccurate to name a particular drug or to describe a detailed toxicology result unless an authoritative record becomes public. The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator explains that unexpected and violent deaths are investigated using information including autopsy findings and toxicology. Its overview of the process is available through the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
Who was Sophia Leone?
Sophia Leone was the professional name of an adult-film performer and model. Reporting that quoted Albuquerque police identified her by that performance name. She began working in the adult-entertainment industry as a young adult and appeared in numerous productions, although the number of productions varies among sources and is not necessary to establish the facts of the case.

A fundraiser organized by her stepfather, Mike Romero, sought help with funeral and related expenses. Those personal details provide context about the person mourned by her family; they are separate from the forensic findings.
What should—and should not—be concluded?
- Supported: Leone was found unresponsive at home in Albuquerque on March 1, 2024, at age 26.
- Supported: Police initially described the death as suspicious while the cause remained undetermined.
- Supported by later reporting: Albuquerque authorities reportedly classified the death as an accidental drug overdose.
- Not established: that Leone was murdered or that a robbery or home invasion caused her death.
- Not publicly specified in the reviewed reports: the drug or drugs involved.
- Not equivalent to the final classification: early reports about alleged suicidal thoughts. Such reports do not prove that the death was suicide, and the later reported manner was accidental.
The most accurate summary is: police initially called Sophia Leone’s death suspicious because the cause was unknown, but later reporting said authorities ruled it an accidental drug overdose. The initial label and the later classification refer to different points in the investigation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why the wording matters
Death investigations often change as autopsy and toxicology information becomes available. A preliminary description such as “suspicious” does not necessarily mean investigators have identified a crime. Conversely, a later reported accidental-overdose ruling should not be expanded into details that have not been released.
In Leone’s case, the reviewed public sources do not include the underlying medical-investigator document. The final classification is supported by later news reporting attributed to Albuquerque law-enforcement officials, while important particulars—especially the substance involved—remain undisclosed.
