Devin had been more direct about his love for Jenn and his desire to build a future with her. Marcus cared about Jenn, but he was still trying to reach the certainty and level of commitment she needed before an engagement.
That difference ultimately decided the first half of the finale. Marcus told Jenn that he loved her, but he also acknowledged that he was not giving her the reassurance she wanted. Rather than accept a relationship that still felt uncertain, Jenn ended things with him.
Marcus’s departure was not presented as a dramatic betrayal or a sudden villain turn. It was a recognition that affection was not enough for the commitment Jenn wanted at the end of the season. Once Jenn sent him home, Devin became her only remaining choice.
Jenn proposed to Devin
The finale’s defining moment was not Devin proposing to Jenn. Jenn proposed to Devin.

In the moment, the proposal looked like a powerful statement of agency. Jenn was not waiting for the show’s usual roles to determine who could ask for a future. She knew what she wanted and asked Devin directly.
Why Jenn and Devin’s engagement ended before the finale aired

The emotional impact of watching the proposal after the breakup
The reunion’s most difficult scene came when Jenn had to watch the proposal again. For viewers, the footage was the climax they had been waiting for. For Jenn, it represented a relationship that had already ended.

The larger issue was not simply whether the breakup happened by phone or on a particular day. Jenn and Devin disagreed about how long Devin had been emotionally pulling away, how much communication continued after filming, and whether the relationship was already deteriorating before the breakup conversation.

Jenn had been clear that she wanted someone ready to choose her fully. When Marcus could not offer that certainty, she let him go. When Devin appeared ready to commit, she proposed to him herself.
