Born in December 2017, Deuce became familiar to NBA fans because his father regularly brought him into the Celtics and NBA All-Star environments. He has appeared at games, celebrated major moments with his father and shown an early interest in youth basketball.
Because Deuce is a minor, reliable public information about him is intentionally limited. What can be documented is the relationship at the center of his public story: a father and son growing up alongside one another while sharing books, basketball and major moments in Jayson Tatum’s career.
Who is Deuce Tatum?
Deuce Tatum is the family, friends and Celtics-fan nickname for Jayson Tatum Jr., Jayson Tatum’s eldest son. The nickname is the name most often used in NBA and Boston Celtics coverage, while “Jayson Tatum Jr.” is the more formal identification used by several outlets.
Deuce was born in December 2017, during the period of his father’s rookie NBA season. Public reports differ on the precise day—Celtics coverage has used December 7, while other reputable reports and databases have cited December 3 or December 6. For that reason, the most responsible summary is that he was born in December 2017 rather than presenting one date as unquestionably settled.

Why Celtics and NBA fans recognize him
Deuce became recognizable because Jayson Tatum made him part of important basketball moments from an early age. The Boston Celtics have described the pair as a recurring “package deal” at NBA All-Star Weekend, a tradition that began during Tatum’s rookie season, when Deuce was still an infant.
He has also attended many Celtics home games and has often been seen courtside with family. NBA and Celtics-produced videos have highlighted father-and-son celebrations, postgame interactions and All-Star appearances. Those appearances explain why fans know Deuce, but they do not make him a professional athlete or a public official in his own right.
The distinction matters. Deuce’s visibility comes primarily from being Jayson Tatum’s son and from participating in public basketball events with his father. It should not be confused with an independent career in the NBA.
Jayson Tatum’s perspective on fatherhood
Jayson Tatum has spoken about becoming a father at 19 and about growing up alongside Deuce. In a 2022 NBA.com interview, he explained that having a child so young meant the two were developing through life together. He also said he wanted Deuce to be able to see and remember parts of his basketball career.

That description gives the father-son relationship more context than game-day photographs alone. Tatum has presented fatherhood as an active part of his identity and motivation, not simply as a celebrity-family detail attached to his public image.
One revealing example came during the 2020 NBA bubble. Tatum had copies of Deuce’s favorite books sent to him and read to his son over FaceTime. The episode showed how he tried to maintain ordinary parenting routines despite the unusual restrictions surrounding the season.

Has Deuce Tatum started playing basketball?
Public reporting indicates that Deuce began participating in youth basketball activities while he was still very young. Boston.com reported in December 2022 that five-year-old Deuce had attended his first basketball practice with his father present. Sports Illustrated later covered a video shared by Jayson Tatum showing Deuce making a spin move and a turnaround jumper in a youth game.
These reports support a careful conclusion: Deuce has shown an early interest in basketball. They do not establish that he is destined for a professional career.

How Deuce inspired Baby Dunks-a-Lot
Deuce is central to the origin of Jayson Tatum’s children’s picture book, Baby Dunks-a-Lot. Tatum co-authored the book with Sam Apple, and the project was inspired by the relationship between Tatum and his son. According to NBA.com’s coverage, Deuce also helped his father choose between possible illustration styles.
The official Abrams Books description identifies Baby Dunks-a-Lot as a 40-page hardcover picture book illustrated by Parker-Nia Gordon. It was published on September 10, 2024, and is aimed approximately at children ages four through eight. The basketball-themed story follows a baby who becomes an unusually talented dunker.
For families interested in the reading side of the Tatum story, Baby Dunks-a-Lot is the most direct product connected to Deuce. It is a book inspired by Jayson Tatum’s experience as a father, not a product that should be described as personally endorsed by Deuce. The publisher lists Amazon among the book’s retail outlets; availability can vary by location and date.

What is known—and what should remain private?
Deuce is a minor, so responsible coverage should stay with information intentionally made public through official NBA or Celtics material, reputable interviews and established news reporting. His public appearances at games and basketball events are appropriate subjects when they are documented by authorized coverage.
There is no editorial need to publish or speculate about a child’s school, home address, daily routine, private travel, medical information or family arrangements. Those details are either private or unsupported by the reliable public record. Photographs and videos should likewise come from lawful, authorized sources and be clearly connected to public events.
It is also important to separate documented facts from online speculation. Public appearances do not establish custody arrangements, residence, schooling or private family conflict. None of those subjects is necessary to understand Deuce’s place in Jayson Tatum’s public story.

Deuce’s public significance is not that he is already a basketball celebrity or a confirmed future player. It is that he has been present during a formative period of Jayson Tatum’s life and career.
He was born around the beginning of Tatum’s NBA journey, appeared with his father at Celtics and All-Star events, shared reading routines during the NBA bubble and helped inspire a children’s book. Together, those details portray Tatum as a young father who has tried to bring his son into meaningful parts of his life while continuing to protect the boundaries around the child’s private life.
