Warning: the complete answers and the reasoning behind them appear below.
Yellow: Things That Are Red
3 BALL, CARDINAL, HEART EMOJI, SOLO CUP
- A standard billiards 3 ball is red.
- A cardinal, in the familiar North American bird reference, is commonly associated with its red plumage.
- The standard heart emoji is red.
- A classic red Solo Cup is a familiar party image.
The category is based on a common color association rather than a strict definition. For example, not every cardinal is necessarily red in every use of the word, and Solo makes cups in other colors, but these are the instantly recognizable associations the puzzle is targeting. Forbes explains these red associations in its walkthrough.

Green: Used in Metaphors for Precarious Situations
8 BALL, DEEP END, LIMB, THIN ICE
Each tile completes a familiar expression about risk, instability, or being placed in a difficult situation:
- Behind the 8 ball means being at a disadvantage or in a difficult position.
- Being thrown into the deep end means being forced to cope with a challenging situation without much preparation.
- Going out on a limb means taking a risk, often by making a prediction or supporting an uncertain position.
- Being on thin ice means being in a precarious situation where one more mistake could cause trouble.
This group is especially easy to miss because 8 BALL looks like it could belong with the red billiards ball, while DEEP END and THIN ICE can initially seem like literal locations or surfaces. Their intended connection is figurative.
Blue: Musical Artists Minus Starting Numbers
6 MAFIA, CHAINZ, DIRECTION, NON BLONDES
Add the missing number at the beginning of each tile to recover the name of a musical act:
| Tile | Completed artist name |
|---|---|
| 6 MAFIA | Three 6 Mafia |
| CHAINZ | 2 Chainz |
| DIRECTION | One Direction |
| NON BLONDES | Four Non Blondes |
The missing-number mechanic is the key: the grid gives you the rest of each name, but removes the opening number. DIRECTION is a particularly tempting decoy because it sounds like it might relate to compass points; in this puzzle, it belongs with the music acts instead.
Purple: Cardinal Directions With the First Letter Changed
COUTH, FORTH, LEST, OAST
Change the first letter of each word and it becomes one of the four cardinal directions:

|---|---|
| COUTH | SOUTH |
| FORTH | NORTH |
| LEST | WEST |
| OAST | EAST |
This is the puzzle’s most specialized wordplay category. The transformed words are not simply synonyms for the directions: each is created by replacing the first letter. The pronunciation trap is important too. COUTH may look close to SOUTH on the page, but it is pronounced differently.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this puzzle was difficult
The grid deliberately creates several plausible but incorrect connections. CARDINAL and DIRECTION both suggest navigation, but they split between the red-items group and the numbered music-artist group. Likewise, 3 BALL and 8 BALL both evoke billiards, yet only the 3 ball belongs in the color category; 8 BALL is part of the precarious-situation expressions.

FORTH resembles a normal English word, while OAST and LEST are less likely to be recognized immediately. Once one or two direction transformations appear, the remaining entries become much easier to test.
TechRadar rated this puzzle Hard and reported making two mistakes in its solving account. That is the publication’s assessment and solving experience, not an official New York Times difficulty score.
