Why distance and timing are part of the story
The couple’s first public separation in 2010 was linked to the strain of long-distance dating. A Los Angeles Times report from 2013 described their planned wedding as having been called off amid the “pitfalls” of a long-distance relationship and reported that they had reunited by then.
For the final split, E! News reported that Bilson was living full-time in Los Angeles while Christensen was in Toronto. Bilson’s later comments are consistent with a relationship becoming harder to sustain over time, but they do not independently verify every detail reported about the 2017 breakup. The strongest evidence remains her own restrained description: time, change, distance and difficulty.

Bilson’s comments about Bill Hader are a separate story
Bilson has also spoken about a later breakup with actor Bill Hader, including describing that pandemic-era separation as exceptionally painful. That relationship is distinct from her relationship with Christensen.
Bilson and Hader dated from 2019 to 2020. Coverage of her comments about that breakup, including reporting by Vanity Fair, should not be merged with the 2023 Bill Maher discussion about her earlier long-term relationship.
