The 2024 U.S. summer TV season ran from Shardlake on May 1 to Only Murders in the Building on August 27, with major returning franchises such as House of the Dragon, The Bear, Bridgerton, and The Boys anchoring a crowded calendar. The guide below preserves that 33-title, 2024 preview while clearly labeling its dates and platforms as historical rather than current availability claims.

How to read this 33-show guide

This is a historical U.S. schedule, not a claim about what is still available in August 2026. The dates below are the announced U.S. premiere dates used by the original May 9, 2024 preview, and the listed service is the platform or network attached to the show at that time. Catalogs, premiere windows, regional rights, and even service names can change.

The list is also broader than conventional scripted series. It includes a three-part documentary, limited series, animation, adaptations, broadcast-style genre television, and returning streaming franchises. The numbers follow the premiere calendar and are not a ranking of quality or popularity.

May 2024: adaptations, mysteries, and returning favorites

May began the summer season with a particularly varied group: Tudor murder, literary adaptations, science fiction, documentaries, comedy, vampires, and several high-profile returning shows.

Historical U.S. premiere: May 1 on Hulu. What it is: This four-part Tudor murder mystery adapts C. J. Sansom’s novels. Lawyer Matthew Shardlake investigates a killing while negotiating the dangerous politics of Henry VIII’s England. It is a good starting point for viewers who want period drama with a detective story at its center.

  2. Hacks, Season 3

Historical U.S. premiere: May 2 on Max. What it is: Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels continue their uneasy comedy-industry partnership after the rupture at the end of Season 2. Historical U.S. premiere: May 2 on Netflix. What it is: This limited-series adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s novel stars Jeff Daniels as an Atlanta real-estate mogul facing bankruptcy, hostile adversaries, and the collapse of the power structure that protected him.

  4. The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Historical U.S. premiere: May 2 on Peacock. What it is: The six-part adaptation of Heather Morris’s novel is inspired by the relationship between Lale and Gita Sokolov during the Holocaust. Because of its subject, it is a serious historical drama rather than casual summer viewing.

  5. Dark Matter

Historical U.S. premiere: May 8 on Apple TV+. What it is: Based on Blake Crouch’s novel, this science-fiction thriller follows physicist Jason Dessen as he encounters alternate versions of his life. A machine capable of accessing parallel realities turns a personal crisis into a larger question about identity, choice, and the lives a person might have lived.

  6. Reginald the Vampire, Season 2

Historical U.S. premiere: May 8 on Syfy. What it is: The horror comedy returns with Reginald facing an existential threat from returning angels and the possibility of an approaching war. Its appeal is the contrast between familiar supernatural stakes and an intentionally comic protagonist.

  7. Black Twitter: A People’s History

Historical U.S. premiere: May 9 on Hulu. What it is: This three-part documentary series draws on Jason Parham’s Wired essay series to examine the online community associated with Black Twitter, including its memes, personalities, conversations, and wider cultural influence. It is the clearest documentary entry in the 33-show lineup.

  8. Bodkin

Historical U.S. premiere: May 9 on Netflix. What it is: A mystery comedy brings journalists and a podcaster to an Irish community to investigate the disappearance of three people decades earlier. The investigation gives the show its suspense, while the clash between outsiders and the local community supplies its humor.

Historical U.S. premiere: May 22 on Apple TV+. What it is: Nikki and Jason’s adoption journey continues, along with the family and friends who have surrounded them throughout the comedy drama. Historical U.S. premiere: June 4 on Hulu. What it is: This sports drama examines the Donald Sterling scandal involving the Los Angeles Clippers, Doc Rivers, and V. Stiviano. July and August 2024: animation, high-concept stories, and finales

The later summer calendar shifted toward unusual premises and established franchises. It included a domestic robot mystery in Kyoto, an animated assassin trying to change course, ancient Roman spectacle, the final season of The Umbrella Academy, and the continuing romantic and comic worlds of Emily in Paris and Only Murders in the Building.

  1. Sunny

Historical U.S. premiere: July 10 on Apple TV+. What it is: Rashida Jones plays Suzie, an American living in Kyoto who receives a domestic robot after her husband and son disappear in a plane crash. Her relationship with the robot becomes part of an investigation into what actually happened.

  5. Emily in Paris, Season 4

Historical U.S. premiere: August 15 on Netflix for the first five episodes, with the final five arriving September 12. What it is: Emily faces romantic uncertainty and professional shakeups, while Mindy deals with problems connected to Eurovision and money. Like Bridgerton, the season was split into two release blocks rather than made available all at once.

  6. Only Murders in the Building, Season 4

Historical U.S. premiere: August 27 on Hulu, according to the updated summer schedule used for the preview. What it is: Charles, Oliver, and Mabel investigate the killing of Charles’s longtime body double, Sazz Pataki. • For history and real-world subjects: Black Twitter: A People’s History, The Big Cigar, Clipped, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and Those About to Die approach cultural history, political history, sports, Holocaust testimony-inspired drama, and ancient spectacle from different angles.
  • For animation and myth: Blood of Zeus and Hit-Monkey offer very different animated options, while Reginald the Vampire provides a live-action horror-comedy alternative.
  • For comedy with a distinctive ensemble: Look to Trying, We Are Lady Parts, The Outlaws, Fantasmas, Land of Women, or Bodkin. Their tones range from family-centered comedy drama to surrealism, punk performance, crime comedy, and fish-out-of-water mystery.

Adaptations and source material

One reason this summer lineup felt so varied is that many of its most visible shows began elsewhere. Shardlake adapts C. J. Sansom’s novel series; A Man in Full comes from Tom Wolfe; The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on Heather Morris’s novel; Dark Matter adapts Blake Crouch; Presumed Innocent comes from Scott Turow; Interview with the Vampire reworks Anne Rice; and The Boys comes from the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.

Those books and comics are starting points for readers who want more context, but an adaptation is not a promise that every plot detail, character, or ending will match the source. Specific editions, formats, prices, and current retailer availability were not verified for this historical preview.

What the original summer framing means now

The original article was published on May 9, 2024 and looked ahead to the coming summer. That means some early-May titles had already premiered when the preview appeared, while later entries were still upcoming. It also means the platform labels should be treated as a snapshot of the U.S. market at that time, not as a current August 2026 watch guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wider 2024 television conversation included additional summer releases beyond this particular 33-title count. This guide keeps the supplied count intact rather than adding titles or suggesting that these were the only shows available during the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these still the current streaming dates and services?

No. This is a historical U.S. summer 2024 schedule. The dates are the announced premiere dates used by the original May 9, 2024 preview, and the services listed were the platforms or networks associated with the shows at that time. Availability may be different now.

Is this a U.S.-only TV preview?

Yes, primarily. The lineup was oriented toward the U.S. market. Doctor Who is the clearest regional exception: the U.S. listing was Disney+, while BBC iPlayer and BBC One were the U.K. homes.

Is the list ranked?

No. The numbers follow the historical premiere calendar and make the 33 titles easy to count; they do not rank the shows by quality, popularity, or anticipation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which shows in the preview are adaptations?

The major adaptations include Shardlake, A Man in Full, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Dark Matter, Presumed Innocent, Interview with the Vampire, and The Boys. The Big Cigar is based on a 2012 Playboy article rather than a novel, and other entries include documentaries, original series, and follow-ups within established universes.

The Bottom Line

The 2024 U.S. summer TV calendar ran from Shardlake on May 1 to Only Murders in the Building on August 27, with its strongest event-TV cluster arriving in June: The Boys, House of the Dragon, The Bear, Bridgerton, and Presumed Innocent. Treat the dates and services as historical 2024 information, then check current regional availability before watching.
