The anime has shown 23 confirmed Subaru deaths through Season 4, Episode 11. That is an anime-only count: it includes every clearly depicted or directly established death that triggers Return by Death, including Subaru’s suicides and assisted suicide. It does not include near-deaths, deaths from alternate continuities, games, side stories, or novel-only loops.
The list below is chronological rather than arranged by how painful, graphic, or important each death is. The reset point is included because each death changes what Subaru knows and where the next attempt begins.
How this death count works
Subaru’s Return by Death ability sends him back to a previously established checkpoint after he dies. He retains his memories, while everyone else generally experiences the new timeline as if the failed attempt never happened. For that reason, two deaths in the same episode can still be two separate deaths: Subaru returned between them and began another loop.

This list counts a death when the anime clearly shows or directly establishes that Subaru dies and Return by Death activates. It counts deliberate suicide and assisted suicide in exactly the same way as a killing by an enemy. It does not count an attack that leaves him injured, unconscious, or apparently doomed unless the anime establishes that he actually died.
Arc 1: The Royal Capital and the loot house
-
Elsa cuts Subaru open at the loot house. Season 1, Episode 1. Elsa Granhiert’s knife attack kills Subaru during the loot-house confrontation. -
Elsa disembowels Subaru at the loot house. Season 1, Episode 1. In the next failed loop, Elsa kills Subaru again, this time by disemboweling him. He returns to the same appa-stand checkpoint. Although both deaths occur in the premiere, they are separate deaths because Subaru resets between them.
-
The alley thugs stab Subaru. Season 1, Episode 2. Subaru tries to investigate Emilia’s stolen insignia before reaching the loot house, but the back-alley thugs kill him. Return by Death again places him at the appa stand.

Arc 2: Roswaal’s mansion
-
Subaru dies from the wolgarm curse while asleep. Season 1, Episode 4. After being bitten by a wolgarm while visiting the village, Subaru becomes afflicted by a curse. He deteriorates and dies in bed in the mansion’s guest room rather than being killed by a visible attack at the moment of death. The next checkpoint is the guest room at Roswaal’s old mansion.
-
Rem kills Subaru with her morningstar. Season 1, Episode 5. Rem suspects Subaru of being connected to the Witch Cult and attacks him with her morningstar. The reset returns him to the mansion guest room.
-
Rem tortures Subaru, and Ram’s wind magic finishes him. Season 1, Episode 7. Rem interrogates and tortures Subaru, but the final fatal injury is delivered by Ram’s wind magic. This death is often shortened to Rem killing Subaru, but the anime presents Ram’s magic as the finishing blow. Subaru returns to the mansion guest room.

-

-

Knowing that the possession will make him a danger to others, Subaru asks Julius and Felix to kill him. Arc 4: Sanctuary and the mansion disaster
-
Elsa slices Subaru open at Roswaal’s mansion. Season 2, Episode 5. Elsa’s assault on the mansion kills Subaru. The new checkpoint is inside Echidna’s tomb in the Sanctuary, a major change from the Capital and Lifaus Highway checkpoints of the earlier loops.

The checkpoint changes are part of the story
Return by Death does not always send Subaru back to the same place. The checkpoints progress as the story advances:
| Deaths | Story location of the checkpoint |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | The appa stand in the Royal Capital |
| 4–6 | The guest room at Roswaal’s mansion |
| 7–11 | The appa stand in the Royal Capital |
| 12 | The earth-dragon carriage on the Lifaus Highway |
| 13–17 | Echidna’s tomb in the Sanctuary |
| 18–20 | A city park in Priestella |
| 21–22 | A flower meadow in the Augria Sand Dunes |
| 23 | The underground area beneath the Pleiades Watchtower |
The checkpoint is not merely a visual detail. It determines which information Subaru can carry into the next attempt and which tragedies he must rediscover from the beginning.
How many times has Subaru died in the anime?

Season 4 is still incomplete at this cutoff. Episodes 13–19 are scheduled to continue through September 30, 2026. Any deaths shown after Episode 11 would change the anime total and require a dated update rather than being silently added to this list.
Are there more Subaru deaths in the novels?
Yes. Twenty-three is not Subaru’s total number of deaths across the entire Re:ZERO franchise. The light novel and web novel expand Arc 6 substantially beyond the currently aired anime, and they contain additional loops and deaths. The exact total varies depending on which medium is being counted, because the light novel revises some web-novel material and the anime condenses or omits other scenes.
Novel-level lists commonly include additional incidents such as Subaru being pushed down the tower stairs, being decapitated by Reid Astrea, dying to Satella’s shadows, killing himself after questioning Shaula, and repeatedly dying during later tower trials. Those examples should be labeled as novel continuity; they should not be appended to the anime list as though they have already been adapted.
In other words, the anime is an entry point, not a complete death ledger. Readers who want the expanded loops should look to the Re:ZERO light novels, which are the more useful source for material omitted or compressed by the anime. Readers who prefer a visual retelling can also try a Re:ZERO manga adaptation, although the manga is not the best substitute for the light novels when the goal is recovering every Arc 6 death and loop.

Counting cautions
- Do not count failed attacks as deaths. Subaru is often injured, incapacitated, or temporarily presumed dead without triggering Return by Death.
- Count separate resets separately. Two deaths shown in one episode still represent two deaths when Subaru returns between them.
- Include intentional deaths. Subaru’s cliff jump, sword suicide, handkerchief suicide, and assisted suicide with Julius and Felix all count because they activate Return by Death.
- Keep continuities separate. The anime, light novel, and web novel do not present exactly the same sequence of loops.
- Date the count. A correct anime total can become outdated as soon as a new episode airs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Subaru’s anime death count really only 23?
It is 23 through Season 4, Episode 11 under an anime-only counting rule. It is not a franchise-wide total. The light novel and web novel include many additional deaths and loops, especially in Arc 6, and the exact novel count depends on the medium and on whether ambiguous or implied deaths are included.
Do Subaru’s suicides count as deaths?
Yes. A deliberate death still activates Return by Death, so Subaru’s cliff jump, broken-sword suicide, enchanted-handkerchief suicide, and assisted suicide with Julius and Felix are included.
Why are two deaths from the same episode counted separately?
Because Subaru returns between them. The episode may show both failures in one continuous piece of television, but each death begins a separate loop and therefore counts as a separate Return by Death event.
Where does this list end?
It ends with Subaru’s death caused by Patrasche under the influence of the Witch’s miasma in Season 4, Episode 3, and includes all confirmed anime deaths through Season 4, Episode 11. Season 4, Episode 12 is outside the stated August 12, 2026 05:59 UTC cutoff.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The anime has shown 23 confirmed Subaru deaths through Season 4, Episode 11. That number includes kills, curses, suicide, assisted suicide, and separate deaths shown in the same episode, but it does not represent the much larger total found across the light novel and web novel.
