Her design is stylized rather than a precise diagram of a real dog. The show exaggerates and simplifies colors, shapes, and expressions for animation, but the breed identification is explicit: Bluey is a Blue Heeler.
What breed is Bingo?
Bluey’s younger sister, Bingo, is a Red Heeler. That is the red-colored counterpart commonly associated with the Australian Cattle Dog breed. The sisters’ contrasting blue and red coats help viewers distinguish them while also reflecting two familiar color descriptions for the breed.

Is Bluey an Australian Shepherd or a Border Collie?
No. Bluey is not identified as an Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, or a generic “cattle dog.” Her official character description calls her a Blue Heeler, or Australian Cattle Dog.
Those other breeds may also be intelligent, active working dogs, which can make the characters seem visually or behaviorally familiar to viewers. Similar traits do not make them the same breed.

Does Bluey accurately represent real Australian Cattle Dogs?
Bluey’s endless energy, cleverness, agility, and enthusiasm for games fit broad aspects of the Australian Cattle Dog’s working-dog background. The breed is known for intelligence, resilience, and athleticism, and was developed to help Australia’s beef industry.
However, the cartoon is a family comedy, not a breed-training guide. Bluey’s personality and behavior should not be treated as a complete temperament profile for every real Australian Cattle Dog. Individual dogs differ according to genetics, breeding, socialization, training, health, age, and living environment.

The official character information says Bluey was named after a real-life Blue Heeler owned by series creator Joe Brumm. That provides background for the character’s name, but it does not mean the cartoon Bluey is intended to be a detailed portrait of that individual dog.
