A Los Angeles jury found him guilty in January 2007, and he was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole. California’s Second District Court of Appeal upheld the convictions in 2015.
But there is a crucial distinction: Goodwin was not identified as either of the two men who physically carried out the driveway ambush. The masked or hooded gunmen escaped on bicycles and were never apprehended in the public record cited in the case. So the most accurate answer to “Who killed Mickey Thompson?” is two-part: Goodwin was convicted as the person who arranged the killings; the actual shooters have never been publicly identified.
The driveway ambush that killed Mickey and Trudy Thompson
Shortly after midnight on March 16, 1988, Mickey Thompson and his wife, Trudy, were attacked outside their home in Bradbury, California. They were preparing to leave for work when two men ambushed them in the driveway.
The attackers fled on ten-speed bicycles. The scene initially suggested a possible robbery, but money and jewelry reportedly remained behind. That detail quickly made the robbery theory less convincing and directed investigators toward the possibility that the Thompsons had been deliberately targeted. Contemporary reporting described the assailants as masked or hooded men, but no eyewitness identification established their identities.

The case was particularly shocking because Mickey Thompson was one of the most recognizable figures in American motorsports. He was a driver, car builder, race promoter, track operator, and tire entrepreneur. In 1960, his Challenger 1 reached 406.60 mph at Bonneville, making Thompson the first American to exceed 400 mph in a piston-powered vehicle on a one-way run. The NHRA’s account of Thompson’s career places the murders against that larger legacy.
Why did investigators focus on Michael Goodwin?
Goodwin had been Thompson’s business partner in a venture involving stadium motorsports events. The partnership deteriorated within months, eventually producing extensive litigation and a bitter personal and financial dispute.
According to the prosecution theory, Goodwin had a motive for revenge after the business relationship collapsed and the resulting civil litigation went against him. The appellate summary describes the business disputes and lawsuits, while contemporaneous reporting referred to a judgment against Goodwin of more than $500,000, with interest and fees increasing the amount.
That financial judgment was part of the prosecution’s explanation for why Goodwin might have wanted Thompson dead. It should not be described as a motive that was independently proven beyond dispute, however. The prosecution argued that the failed partnership, legal judgment, hostility, and financial pressure supplied a reason for the murders; the jury ultimately accepted the case against Goodwin.

Prosecutors also presented testimony from people who said Goodwin had expressed hostility toward Thompson or made threats. The case included evidence concerning Goodwin’s alleged connection to weapons and investigative efforts that continued after the initial inquiry stalled. It was a circumstantial case—not a prosecution built around an eyewitness who saw Goodwin shoot the Thompsons.
Rank #2
Goodwin maintained that he was innocent and had an alibi. He also continued to deny responsibility at sentencing. The conviction therefore rested on the jury’s assessment of the combined circumstantial evidence, rather than on public identification of Goodwin as one of the bicycle-riding gunmen.
How the cold case eventually moved forward
The investigation remained unresolved for years. According to Netflix’s official account, detective Mark Lillienfeld revisited the case after the original officer in charge retired. Lillienfeld reviewed the evidence and later developed a relationship with Goodwin after Goodwin returned to the United States.
That renewed investigative work eventually led to charges more than 13 years after the killings. Goodwin was initially pursued in Orange County, but that prosecution was dismissed on venue-related grounds. Los Angeles County then charged him in connection with the murders, which occurred in Bradbury in Los Angeles County.
The long delay is one reason the case can be easy to misunderstand. The fact that it took years to bring Goodwin to trial does not mean that the public record identifies the two shooters. The later prosecution established a legal case against Goodwin for the murders, while the people who carried out the attack remained unidentified in the cited record.
What happened at Goodwin’s trial?
On January 4, 2007, a Los Angeles jury convicted Michael Goodwin of murdering both Mickey and Trudy Thompson. The jury also found special allegations involving multiple murders and lying in wait.
Rank #3
In March 2007, the judge sentenced Goodwin to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. In practical terms, the judgment meant that Goodwin would remain imprisoned for the rest of his life unless the convictions were later overturned or otherwise changed through a legal process.
The prosecution’s theory was that Goodwin arranged or procured the killings as retaliation connected to the failed business relationship and its financial consequences. Because the physical gunmen were not caught, it is more precise to say that Goodwin was convicted of arranging the murders than to say that he was proven to have personally fired the shots.
Did Goodwin’s appeal overturn the conviction?
No. In January 2015, California’s Second District Court of Appeal affirmed the judgment. The appellate court rejected Goodwin’s arguments concerning insufficient evidence, prosecutorial misconduct, evidentiary rulings, delay, and the exclusion of third-party-culpability evidence. Contemporaneous reporting on the appellate decision summarized the court’s rejection of those challenges.
The appeal is important because it confirms the legal status of the case: Goodwin’s convictions were not merely an accusation or an unresolved prosecution theory. They were returned by a jury and upheld on appeal.
At the same time, an affirmed conviction does not change what the appellate record says about the gunmen. The appeal did not publicly identify the two men who escaped by bicycle, and the sources reviewed do not establish that Goodwin was physically present in the driveway.
Rank #4
So was Michael Goodwin the shooter?
The public record does not establish that. Goodwin was convicted of the two murders and is commonly described in coverage as the person who arranged or orchestrated the killings. But the two men who carried out the ambush were never apprehended according to the appellate record and cited contemporary reporting.
That distinction matters in any responsible account of the case:
- What the courts established: A jury convicted Goodwin of murdering Mickey and Trudy Thompson, and the Court of Appeal upheld the convictions.
- What prosecutors argued: Goodwin had a motive arising from the failed business relationship, civil litigation, hostility, and financial pressure, and arranged for the Thompsons to be killed.
- What remains unresolved publicly: The identities of the two people who physically shot the Thompsons.
It would therefore be inaccurate to write that Goodwin was caught at the scene, that an eyewitness identified him as a gunman, or that police arrested the bicycle-riding attackers.
What does Netflix’s Homicide: Los Angeles episode show?
The Thompson case is Episode 2 of Netflix’s Homicide: Los Angeles, titled “Race Car Killer.” Netflix’s official Tudum description emphasizes the bicycle escape, the abandoned-robbery theory, the early suspicion of Goodwin, his alibi and departure from the country, and Lillienfeld’s later investigative work. Netflix’s official episode coverage is the best source for the program’s framing and featured investigators.
The episode is a documentary retelling, not the legal record. It can organize the investigation into a compelling narrative, but the California appellate opinion is the stronger source for the conviction, the sentence, and the legal arguments considered on appeal.

Viewers should also be cautious with any documentary discussion of alternative suspects, alleged confessions, or theories that Goodwin was wrongly convicted. Goodwin’s defense and supporters have argued that investigators failed to pursue other suspects or adequately consider third-party culpability. Those are defense claims, not judicial findings. The appellate court reviewed similar categories of challenge and affirmed the convictions.
