2026 Grammy category and eligibility changes
Two new categories
The Academy added two categories for the 2026 awards:
- Best Traditional Country Album
- Best Album Cover
Country category renamed
The existing Best Country Album category was renamed Best Contemporary Country Album. The change distinguishes the contemporary category from the newly introduced traditional-country recognition.
Expanded Best New Artist eligibility
Certain artists who had previously been nominated in Album of the Year could qualify for Best New Artist if their prior contribution fell below the applicable playing-time threshold. This rule change is why a previous Album of the Year connection does not automatically disqualify an artist from consideration.

The Academy also changed packaging-related eligibility. Physical albums sold directly to fans through an artist’s or label’s website became eligible for certain categories, including Best Recording Package, Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album.
