Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright separated in January 2024 after nearly five years of marriage, not exactly four. The former Vanderpump Rules couple announced the split publicly on February 29, 2024, and Cartwright filed for divorce in Los Angeles County on August 27 of that year.
The divorce was still not finalized in the latest reliable update available for this report. Cartwright and Taylor share one child, son Cruz, and their current focus has increasingly shifted from their relationship to custody and co-parenting.
When did Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright separate?
Cartwright’s divorce filing identified January 24, 2024, as the date of separation. Some early reports used January 25, but January 24 is the date most consistently attributed to the court filing. The couple announced that they were taking time apart on their joint podcast, When Reality Hits, on February 29, 2024.
That timing explains the headline’s “after four years of marriage” wording, but the more precise description is nearly five years. Taylor and Cartwright married in Kentucky in June 2019. They had been married for about four years and seven months when the reported separation date arrived.

Cartwright said she needed time apart for her mental health and for the well-being of the couple’s young son. The announcement confirmed that the separation was not simply a storyline created for television: the pair were living separately and dealing with the consequences privately as well as publicly.
Why did Jax and Brittany split?
There is no independently established single cause of the breakup. The safest summary is that the marriage had gone through a prolonged period of conflict, deteriorating communication and repeated arguments.
Cartwright later described frequent fights and said an argument connected to her going out with Kristen Doute became a breaking point. She also made clear that the dispute was part of broader problems rather than the sole reason the marriage ended. Later coverage attributed to Cartwright concerns about Taylor’s “blow-ups” and aggressive behavior, and reported that she sought legal advice.
Those accounts should be treated as personal allegations and explanations, not as court findings. Taylor and Cartwright have emphasized different aspects of the relationship’s breakdown in their public comments. Reports have also circulated about substance use, anger and mental-health issues, but the available reporting does not establish those claims as adjudicated facts or prove that any one of them caused the separation. Infidelity has likewise not been established as the cause.

On August 27, 2024, Cartwright filed a petition to dissolve the marriage in Los Angeles County. The filing cited irreconcilable differences, the standard legal basis used in many California dissolution cases.
Cartwright requested primary legal and physical custody of Cruz, the couple’s son, with visitation for Taylor. She did not request spousal support for herself, and she did not ask the court to award spousal support to Taylor.

“Filed for divorce” is important wording here. A filing begins a legal proceeding; it does not mean that the court has finalized the divorce. The latest high-quality update located for this report, a Bravo report published May 7, 2026, said the dissolution was still awaiting finalization.
Are Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright legally divorced?
They should not be described as legally divorced unless a later court record confirms finalization. Bravo’s May 2026 update said the divorce remained in progress, with the former couple prioritizing Cruz and trying to keep conflict away from him.

A secondary legal explainer published in June 2026 reported that the parties had reached a custody agreement in March. Because the exact terms were not independently confirmed through a primary court order in the available research, that report should be treated cautiously. It is more accurate to say that an agreement was reported than to state its provisions as established fact.
The case had already faced delays during 2025. Taylor and Cartwright discussed outstanding paperwork and unresolved issues publicly, and Taylor said they had hoped to finalize the divorce in July 2025. That did not happen. Cartwright later said at BravoCon 2025 that finalization, which had been expected earlier in the fall, had been postponed. Bravo continued to report in December 2025 that the divorce was not yet final.
How their son Cruz factors into the separation
Taylor and Cartwright share one son, Cruz, who was born in 2021. Cartwright’s original filing sought primary legal and physical custody, while requesting visitation for Taylor.
More recent coverage has focused on the pair’s efforts to make co-parenting workable. Both have spoken about the importance of shielding Cruz from the most difficult parts of the separation. That does not mean every custody issue has been publicly resolved: the reported March 2026 custody agreement has not been independently matched here to a verified court order, and its terms should not be assumed.

The custody question is also separate from the divorce question. Parents can establish or modify parenting arrangements while a dissolution case is still pending, so a custody agreement would not, by itself, prove that the marriage had legally ended.
The separation became a major storyline on The Valley
Taylor and Cartwright’s relationship had already been part of the Bravo reality-television universe through Vanderpump Rules. Their later marriage, separation and divorce became a major storyline on The Valley.
That television context explains why the split received sustained coverage, but it also requires a distinction between filmed events and later developments. Episodes may show the relationship at an earlier point in time, while divorce filings, custody discussions and public statements may occur months later. A scene shown on television is therefore not necessarily the latest account of the legal case.

What happens next?
The central unresolved issue is legal finalization. Until a final judgment or authoritative later report confirms otherwise, Taylor and Cartwright are best described as separated spouses, former partners or an estranged couple—not unequivocally as ex-husband and ex-wife.
The other continuing issue is co-parenting. Their public statements indicate that Cruz is the priority, but the precise custody arrangement and any later changes should be confirmed through court records rather than inferred from reality-TV episodes or social-media posts.
Rank #4
The relationship may continue to appear in entertainment coverage and on Bravo programming, but the show’s narrative should not be confused with the legal record. The confirmed sequence is straightforward: separation was reported in early 2024, divorce was filed in August 2024, and the latest reliable update in the available research still did not show a finalized dissolution.
