Spoiler warning: This guide discusses major Season 2 identities, alliances, deaths, and the finale.

Squid Game Season 2 brings back Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, the winner of the first competition, alongside the Front Man, detective Hwang Jun-ho, and the Recruiter. The season also introduces a new group of contestants whose debts, family ties, betrayals, and personal crises shape the game. This guide covers the principal cast and characters—not every unnamed contestant, guard, cameo, or background performer.

Three years after winning the first game, Gi-hun gives up his plan to go to the United States. Instead, he uses his winnings and his knowledge of the organization to find the Recruiter and re-enter the competition. His goal is no longer merely to survive or claim the 45.6 billion won prize: he wants to expose and dismantle the system behind the games.

Returning characters

Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun / Player 456

Gi-hun is the returning protagonist and winner of Season 1. Before the first game, he was a struggling divorced gambler trying to secure money and preserve his relationship with his daughter. After winning, he is left with knowledge of an organization that continues to recruit desperate people and turn their desperation into entertainment.

Season 2 changes Gi-hun’s position dramatically. He is no longer entering blindly or simply hoping to escape with the prize. He spends his winnings searching for the Recruiter and trying to locate the people operating the competition. When that effort leads him back into the game, he brings experience, suspicion, and a specific objective: prevent the games from continuing.

His determination is also his vulnerability. Gi-hun is more focused and less hopeful than he was in the first season, but he still believes contestants can act together rather than turning on one another. Much of Season 2 tests whether that belief is realistic.

Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man / Hwang In-ho / Player 001

The Front Man is the masked administrator and principal ideological antagonist of the games. His former identity is Hwang In-ho, a police officer whose history and disillusionment help explain how he became committed to the competition rather than opposed to it. Season 2 expands his role beyond that of a distant overseer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

He enters the game personally under the name Young-il and takes Player 001’s position. That decision puts him directly beside Gi-hun and allows him to observe—and manipulate—Gi-hun’s attempts to organize the players. The Front Man’s argument is that people are fundamentally selfish and hopeless. Gi-hun’s counterargument is that cooperation and moral choice remain possible even under extreme pressure.

Wi Ha-jun as Hwang Jun-ho

Jun-ho is the detective who survived the island storyline in Season 1. He returns determined to find the organization and end the games, but his investigation is constrained by a familiar problem: he knows what happened, yet has difficulty obtaining enough institutional support or evidence to make others believe him.

While Gi-hun attacks the problem by re-entering the competition, Jun-ho works from the outside through police investigation and pursuit. The two characters therefore become parallel investigators. Their methods differ, but both are trying to reach the same hidden system—and Jun-ho’s connection to the Front Man makes that search personal.

Gong Yoo as the Recruiter

The Recruiter—called the Salesman in some coverage—is the sharply dressed figure who approaches potential players in public places. He challenges them to a game of ddakji, then offers them a path into the larger competition.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

His Season 1 appearance was brief, but Season 2 gives him a deeper storyline. He represents the bridge between ordinary life and the secret game: contestants do not simply appear on the island. They are identified, tested, persuaded, and drawn into the system through people such as him.

New contestants and their motivations

Yim Si-wan as Lee Myung-gi / Player 333

Lee Myung-gi is a cryptocurrency influencer whose financial decisions caused serious losses for himself and his followers. He enters the game looking for a way out of a dangerous financial hole.

Myung-gi’s story is not only about personal debt. His online influence means other people were affected by the choices he promoted or made. That gives his participation a wider moral dimension than a contestant who lost money alone.

Kang Ha-neul as Dae-ho / Player 388

Dae-ho is a new contestant who may become an ally for Gi-hun. Early descriptions deliberately reveal less about his background than about several other players, making his loyalty and usefulness important questions as the competition develops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lee Jin-uk as Gyeong-seok / Player 246

Gyeong-seok is a loving and loyal father who enters prepared to do whatever is necessary to protect his family. His motivation is rooted in family responsibility rather than status or simple greed, placing him among the contestants whose choices are shaped by obligations outside the arena.

Park Sung-hoon as Hyun-ju / Player 120

Hyun-ju risks everything to obtain essential medical treatment. Netflix’s character description emphasizes her kindness, selflessness, and consideration for other people—qualities that are difficult to preserve in a competition designed to reward suspicion and violence.

Yang Dong-geun as Yong-sik / Player 007

Yong-sik is a compulsive gambler drowning in debt. His storyline becomes more complicated when he discovers that an unexpected loved one is also among the contestants. The result is a conflict between his gambling problems, his instinct for self-preservation, and his responsibilities to family.

Kang Ae-shim as Geum-ja / Player 149

Geum-ja is headstrong and determined. She joins the competition to help a relative in serious need, giving her a protective role within the player group. Her presence demonstrates how the games draw in people who are trying to solve family crises as much as personal financial ones.

Jo Yuri as Jun-hee / Player 222

Jun-hee is dealing with the consequences of a bad investment. Her situation is presented as the result of trusting the wrong person, rather than as a straightforward case of reckless financial behavior. Betrayal and misplaced trust are therefore central to her character.

Park Gyu-young as No-eul

No-eul is a former soldier and North Korean defector whose stated purpose is finding the child from whom she has been separated. She carries deep pain and guilt, and her role has more complexity than her initial mission suggests.

No-eul is not listed as a contestant in the player table because her Season 2 role is connected to the guards and the operation of the games. For the same reason, details about Park Gyu-young’s tactical training for the production should not be confused with facts about No-eul’s fictional history: the actor trained at a tactical school to learn firearm handling for the role, which is a production detail.

Chae Kuk-hee as Seon-nyeo / Player 044

Seon-nyeo is a shaman whose best days are behind her. She makes unnerving prophecies about fellow contestants, adding a metaphysical and psychological dimension to the player group. Whether her predictions are meaningful, manipulative, or simply unsettling is part of the tension surrounding her.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lee David as Min-su / Player 125

Min-su is shy and has difficulty standing up for himself. He enters the game after becoming the victim of a housing scam, a detail that distinguishes his financial crisis from the investment-related problems affecting several other players.

Min-su should not be confused with Season 1’s VIP 3. The apparent similarity in the actors’ English-rendered names has led to confusion, but they are different characters.

Roh Jae-won as Nam-gyu / Player 124

Nam-gyu is a former club promoter who bullies weaker players. His cruelty is not portrayed as random: he uses it to impress people he considers stronger than himself. That makes him a social predator within the contestant hierarchy, exploiting fear to gain status.

Choi Seung-hyun as Thanos / Player 230

Thanos is a failed rapper who lost money in a cryptocurrency investment. He is unpredictable, constantly focused on winning, and brings an unstable energy to the group.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

The character’s name and visual presentation draw inspiration from Marvel’s Thanos. The actor, Choi Seung-hyun, is also known professionally as the rapper T.O.P, but those are separate facts: Thanos is a fictional failed rapper, while T.O.P is the performer’s real-world music identity.

Won Ji-an as Se-mi / Player 380

Se-mi has an outgoing personality and bold style. She is kind to people who appear weak and refuses to yield to bullies, placing her in direct opposition to the contestants who try to dominate others through intimidation.

The most important relationships

Gi-hun and the Front Man

The season’s central conflict is both strategic and philosophical. Gi-hun believes people can still cooperate and make ethical choices. The Front Man believes the game merely exposes what humanity already is. By entering as Young-il, Player 001, the Front Man can challenge Gi-hun’s ideals from within the group rather than simply watching from the control room.

Gi-hun and Jun-ho

Gi-hun and Jun-ho are pursuing the same enemy through opposite routes. Gi-hun returns to the game to disrupt it from inside; Jun-ho attempts to build an investigation outside it. Their stories show the difficulty of proving that an extraordinary crime exists when the organization is designed to erase evidence and isolate survivors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gi-hun and Jung-bae

Jung-bae is not a stranger recruited solely for Season 2. He is Gi-hun’s longtime friend and former co-worker, previously seen gambling with him at a horse racetrack. His presence turns the competition into a confrontation with Gi-hun’s past and raises the emotional stakes of every decision Gi-hun makes.

Yong-sik and Geum-ja

Yong-sik and Geum-ja are linked by a family relationship revealed among the players. Their shared presence turns two separate debt-and-family stories into one: Yong-sik must face the consequences of his compulsive gambling while Geum-ja takes on a protective role toward a relative in need.

Myung-gi and Thanos

Both Myung-gi and Thanos are connected to failed cryptocurrency investments, but they represent different forms of financial collapse. Myung-gi is an influencer whose decisions affected followers as well as himself. Thanos is a failed rapper whose own investment loss helps drive him into the game. Their similarity creates a useful contrast rather than making them interchangeable.

Nam-gyu and Se-mi

Nam-gyu and Se-mi represent opposing social forces among the contestants. Nam-gyu bullies weaker players to gain the approval of stronger ones; Se-mi protects vulnerable people and refuses to be intimidated. Their conflict reflects the season’s larger question of whether fear or solidarity will control the group.

Spoilers: Young-il’s identity and the finale

Major Season 2 spoilers follow.

The Front Man is Player 001

The season’s major identity reveal is that the Front Man has entered the competition as Player 001 under the name Young-il. He presents himself as one of Gi-hun’s allies while testing Gi-hun’s belief that the contestants can unite against the game.

Gi-hun does not know Young-il’s true identity during the relevant events. That deception changes the meaning of their apparent alliance: the person closest to Gi-hun’s plan is also the person most committed to proving it cannot work.

What happens to Jung-bae?

Jung-bae is killed by the Front Man at the end of Episode 7. The death leaves Gi-hun devastated and becomes the emotional low point of the season’s finale. It is also a direct attack on Gi-hun’s personal history: the Front Man does not merely defeat an anonymous contestant but destroys someone Gi-hun has known for years.

Where to find Squid Game merchandise

The show’s visual identity makes character-linked merchandise especially recognizable. Fans looking for apparel, gifts, or collectibles can begin with the Netflix Shop’s dedicated official Squid Game merchandise collection, including items associated with the series’ player and guard designs. A green Player 456 tracksuit is the most obvious Gi-hun-inspired option, while character apparel, mugs, toys, and figures may appeal to collectors.

Availability, sizing, pricing, licensing, and shipping vary by region and can change. Third-party marketplaces may also list a Squid Game tracksuit, but a marketplace listing should not automatically be treated as official Netflix merchandise. Check the seller, product description, licensing information, and return policy before buying.

For collectors, licensed retailers and brands such as BoxLunch and Funko have been associated with Squid Game merchandise, but current stock and regional availability should be verified before publication or purchase. The strongest way to match an item to this guide is to search by the character or player number—such as Player 456—rather than assuming every green tracksuit represents a specific Season 2 product.

The Bottom Line

Squid Game Season 2 uses its expanded cast to turn financial desperation into a network of competing loyalties. Gi-hun’s return, the Front Man’s undercover role as Young-il, Jun-ho’s outside investigation, and the family and friendship ties among the contestants all support the season’s central argument: the games are built to prove people cannot cooperate, while Gi-hun keeps risking everything to prove otherwise.
