He has described the recovery as slow and uncertain, and said the problem affected reading, watching television, seeing his sons play sports, attending previews of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, and working in the studio.
He has not publicly disclosed a confirmed clinical diagnosis, the name of an infectious organism, or a guaranteed prognosis. The most accurate account is therefore not simply that Elton John “went blind,” but that he reported serious infection-related vision loss, an impaired second eye, and a major change in how he works.
What Elton John first announced about his eyesight
On September 3, 2024, John said that a severe eye infection during the summer had left him with “only limited vision in one eye.” He said the healing process was extremely slow and that it would take time before sight returned to the affected eye. His statement expressed hope, but did not identify the medical diagnosis or explain precisely what part of the eye had been damaged. The Washington Post reported his initial announcement.
That wording matters. John described an infection and its effect on his sight; he did not announce a formal diagnosis such as a particular corneal disease, retinal disorder, or optic-nerve injury. No reliable source reviewed for this article establishes a more specific clinical explanation.

July 2024: the infection John said caused the sight loss
In a November 2024 interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, John gave a clearer timeline. He said he lost eyesight in his right eye in July after contracting an infection while in the south of France. He said he had been unable to see out of that eye for four months by the time of the interview.
John also said that the vision in his left eye was “not the greatest.” He described himself as temporarily “stuck,” with hope and encouragement that the situation might improve, but uncertainty about whether he would be able to return to the recording studio. ABC News’ account of the interview includes his comments about both eyes and his work.
Those statements support describing the right eye as having lost sight or usable vision, when clearly attributed to John. They do not establish a measured visual-acuity level, total blindness in both eyes, or permanent blindness. John said he could still see something through his left eye, although its vision was impaired.
How the problem affected reading, television and everyday life
John’s comments later moved beyond the medical timeline and described what the impairment felt like in daily life. In an interview reported in April 2025, he said he could not see television, read, or watch his sons play rugby or soccer. He called the period stressful and distressing.

He also said he felt fortunate to have his family and to retain some sight in his left eye. His description was both practical and emotional: ordinary activities that depend on vision had become difficult or impossible, while the long recovery offered no clear timetable. He summarized his response as an effort to adapt and “just get on with it.” The Guardian reported these remarks from a Times interview.
Why he struggled to return to the studio
In November 2024, John said he did not know whether he could return to the studio. He explained that he could not see, watch, or read normally. For a musician whose established creative process has long involved working closely with written lyrics and visual material, that uncertainty affected more than his personal entertainment: it disrupted the way he made records.
But the disruption did not end his music-making. John ultimately completed Who Believes in Angels?, a collaboration with Brandi Carlile, lyricist Bernie Taupin, and producer Andrew Watt. The project is evidence for a careful distinction: his sight loss interfered with his customary workflow, but it did not stop him from completing new music. The Guardian discussed both the recording difficulties and the completed collaboration.

The December 2024 Devil Wears Prada gala
John’s vision problems also affected his work on The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, which he scored. At a charity gala on December 1, 2024, he said he had not been able to attend many previews because he had lost his eyesight and found it difficult to see the production.

He added that he could hear the performance and enjoyed how it sounded. This was a direct example of the condition affecting a professional obligation, rather than only a general health update. John remained connected to the production through its music even when he could not experience the staging visually. ABC News reported his comments about attending the musical.
The later update: “devastating,” but not without hope
In reporting published in November 2025 and based on a Variety interview, John again said that he had lost sight in his right eye and that the vision in his left eye was poor. He described the preceding 15 months as challenging because he had been unable to see, watch, or read normally. He characterized the experience as devastating while saying he still hoped science might help.
This later account confirms the seriousness and persistence of the problem as John described it. It still does not justify saying that doctors had declared him permanently blind in both eyes. His public comments continued to describe right-eye sight loss, reduced left-eye vision, an uncertain outcome, and hope for improvement. The Irish Times reported the November 2025 update.
How his songwriting process changed
The latest account located for this timeline came from Bernie Taupin in July 2026. Taupin said John could no longer read Taupin’s lyrics at the piano because of his vision problems. According to Taupin, the pair changed the order of their collaboration: John created instrumental tracks first, then Taupin wrote lyrics for those pieces.

That is an important example of adaptation rather than retirement. John’s vision problems altered the lyric-first process associated with his work with Taupin, but the collaboration continued in a different form. Taupin also said John had a record expected around the beginning of 2027. That is an expectation reported by Taupin, not a confirmed release date; no official album title, track list, or formal release announcement was established in the research for this article. iHeart reported Taupin’s comments about the changed process and prospective record.

What has not been publicly confirmed
- The exact diagnosis: John has called it a severe eye infection, but no confirmed pathogen or more specific medical diagnosis was established in the sources reviewed.
- The precise cause of the visual impairment: Public reporting connects the sight loss to the infection in John’s account. It does not confirm optic-nerve damage, a particular retinal condition, or another mechanism.
- A permanent outcome: John has described severe and persistent impairment, but has also expressed hope for improvement. There is no basis here for declaring him permanently blind in both eyes.
- A confirmed 2027 release: Taupin’s comments point to a prospective record around early 2027, but that should not be presented as an officially announced release date.
