However, they are not all technically dinosaurs. Mosasaurus was a marine squamate, Quetzalcoatlus and Anurognathus were pterosaurs, and Mutadon and Distortus rex are fictional genetic experiments.
Set five years after Jurassic World Dominion, the film follows an extraction team to Ile Saint-Hubert, one of the isolated equatorial environments where surviving prehistoric animals now live. Their mission is to obtain genetic material from three enormous animals—Titanosaurus on land, Mosasaurus in the sea and Quetzalcoatlus in the air—in the hope that it can help produce a life-saving cardiac drug.
The main creatures at a glance
| Creature | What it is | Role in the film |
|---|---|---|
| Mosasaurus | Marine squamate reptile | Attacks the civilian family’s boat and becomes an ocean DNA target |
| Spinosaurus | Dinosaur | Attacks the boat in the opening sequence |
| Titanosaurus | Film’s sauropod dinosaur | Land-based DNA target encountered in a herd |
| Quetzalcoatlus | Pterosaur | Defends its nest and provides the aerial DNA target |
| Velociraptor | Dinosaur | Stalks Xavier Dobbs before a Mutadon interrupts the attack |
| Aquilops, or Dolores | Small ceratopsian dinosaur | Isabella Delgado’s friendly companion |
| Tyrannosaurus rex | Dinosaur | Pursues the family through a river sequence |
| Mutadon | Engineered raptor-pterosaur hybrid | Attacks the expedition near an abandoned convenience store |
| Distortus rex | Engineered T. rex-derived mutant | The film’s principal monster threat |
The measurements below describe the film’s production designs. They should not be read as definitive measurements for every real animal in the corresponding prehistoric group.
The three animals targeted for DNA extraction
The expedition’s mission has a deliberately simple structure: find one giant animal from each environment. That gives the movie three distinct creature set pieces while also explaining why the team travels across land, water and sky.

1. Mosasaurus
The Mosasaurus is the enormous marine predator that attacks the civilian family’s boat. It is also one of the three animals selected as a source of genetic material for the proposed cardiac drug.
The production version is approximately 100 feet long and weighs more than 40,000 pounds. It has a green-gray body with leopard-like markings, a pattern influenced partly by the coloration of tiger sharks. Its attack is staged as a maritime survival sequence rather than a conventional dinosaur chase: the danger can approach from beneath the boat, disappear into the water and strike with very little warning.
Scientifically, Mosasaurus was not a dinosaur. It was a giant marine squamate, part of the same broad reptile lineage as monitor-lizard relatives. The movie’s animal borrows visual and behavioral ideas from several aquatic predators, including sharks, whales and crocodiles, but its real evolutionary identity is closer to a monitor-lizard relative than to any of those animals.
2. Titanosaurus
Titanosaurus is the expedition’s land-based target. The team encounters a herd rather than a solitary animal, making the sequence one of the film’s clearest attempts to show the creatures as wildlife instead of interchangeable movie monsters.

The film design is approximately 50 feet tall, 70 feet long and heavier than 30 tons. Its long neck allows it to dominate the landscape, while its whip-like tail adds both scale and danger when the herd is disturbed. The contrast is important: the Titanosaurus is a massive herbivore moving with other members of its kind, while the human characters are also being pursued by engineered predators.
The name should be treated as the film’s fictional franchise depiction, not as a complete representation of the real diversity of titanosaurs. Titanosaurs were a broad and varied group of sauropods, and the movie’s proportions and behavior are production choices designed for the story.
3. Quetzalcoatlus
Quetzalcoatlus is the aerial DNA target. Henry Loomis and Zora Bennett enter its nest to reach an egg, but the adult returns and attacks while defending the nesting site.
On the ground, the film’s Quetzalcoatlus stands approximately 16 feet 7 inches tall. It has a wingspan of about 30 feet and a six-foot beak. Those dimensions make it frightening even before it takes flight: the creature can function as a tall, aggressive terrestrial predator and as a giant flying animal.

Pterosaurs were a separate group of flying reptiles that lived alongside dinosaurs, and the film uses the distinction less strictly than a scientific explainer should.

Aquilops and Dolores: the film’s friendly dinosaur
Aquilops is the small horned herbivore adopted by Isabella Delgado. She names the animal Dolores, and it rides in her backpack during the expedition. Unlike most of the creatures in the film, Dolores is not primarily a threat, obstacle or spectacle. The animal gives Isabella an emotional connection to the prehistoric world and provides the story with its principal moment of creature companionship.
Aquilops was a real Early Cretaceous ceratopsian from what is now Montana. It lived approximately 100 million years ago and was only a few feet long—roughly puppy-sized. For close interaction with the cast, the production used three 18-inch animatronic puppets.
That makes Dolores a genuine dinosaur in the scientific sense, although a very small one. The official LEGO Dolores Aquilops 76970 set is a natural fit for viewers most interested in the film’s gentler creature; LEGO also released a wider Jurassic World Rebirth line featuring several of the film’s larger animals. Product availability and pricing can vary by region and retailer.

4. Spinosaurus
Several Spinosaurus attack and destroy the family’s boat during the opening sequence. They are shown as amphibious predators capable of moving between the water and the shoreline, making the boat a temporary refuge rather than a safe escape.
The film’s redesigned animals are approximately 39 feet long and 13 feet high. The production design gives them a deeper tail, stronger hind limbs, webbed feet and a more powerful, crocodile-like profile. These changes update the species from its previous franchise appearance in Jurassic Park III.
The update reflects the modern interpretation of Spinosaurus as an animal strongly adapted to aquatic or semiaquatic environments. The precise details of how it hunted and moved through water remain subjects for scientific discussion, but Rebirth clearly wants its Spinosaurus to feel more at home around rivers and coasts than the older film version did.
5. Tyrannosaurus rex
The film’s T. rex wakes near a lakeside shelter after Teresa inflates an emergency raft. It then pursues the family down a river, creating one of the movie’s most recognizable chase sequences.
Recommended Free Tools
The scene adapts a river-raft set piece from Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel that did not appear in the first film adaptation. The sequence therefore works as both a new action scene and a deliberate return to an unused piece of Jurassic Park history.
This is not presented as the same individual T. rex seen in the earlier movies. The production team designed this animal to look healthier, heavier, more muscular and more bull-like while retaining the familiar Jurassic Park silhouette. The distinction matters: a recognizable design language does not establish that the animal is the same character.
6. Velociraptor
Two Velociraptors stalk Xavier Dobbs through a brief jungle sequence. They are about to kill him when a Mutadon attacks one of the raptors, immediately establishing the engineered hybrid as a new and more unpredictable danger.

The film’s Velociraptors are approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and 12 feet long. That is considerably larger than the real Velociraptor fossils, which came from what is now Mongolia. As with previous Jurassic films, the franchise uses the name for a much larger, more cinematic raptor-like animal. The new design also draws inspiration from the raptors of Jurassic Park III.
7. Dilophosaurus
A Dilophosaurus briefly scavenges from a dead Parasaurolophus near the river. It then approaches Teresa before being frightened away by the sleeping T. rex.
The production version is described as an Early Jurassic theropod approximately 5 feet tall and 8 feet long. Its appearance is short, but it is an intentional callback to the species’ famous role in the original Jurassic Park. The film does not give it the same extended attack sequence or character importance as the Mosasaurus, Spinosaurus or D-rex.
8. Ankylosaurus
Ankylosaurus appears briefly in the background. It is a heavily armored Late Cretaceous herbivore, approximately 11 feet tall and 30 feet long in the film’s production specifications, with an estimated weight of around 10,000 pounds.
Its defining feature is the powerful tail club, which could be used defensively against predators. In Rebirth, however, the animal is primarily a world-building appearance rather than the center of a major action beat.

Compsognathus appears among the film’s small background carnivores. The Compies are described as chicken-sized Late Jurassic theropods, approximately 1 foot tall and 3 to 4 feet long, weighing roughly 6.6 pounds.
They function as a visual callback to the small pack-hunting dinosaurs seen throughout earlier Jurassic movies. Their presence reinforces the sense that Ile Saint-Hubert contains a functioning ecosystem, even when the animals are not driving the plot.
The engineered creatures
Mutadon and Distortus rex should be separated from the natural prehistoric species. Neither is a recognized paleontological taxon. Within the story, both are products of secret InGen genetic research.
10. Mutadon
Mutadons are failed engineered hybrids that combine raptor-like and pterosaur-like traits. They attack the group near an abandoned convenience store while the characters wait for a helicopter, then pursue them into the tunnels.

- Interactivity: Small dinosaur models can be used to play games, act out scenes, or simply be enjoyed for their beauty. They can be used to create a dinosaur-themed play area, or they can be used to act out scenes from the Mesozoic era. They can also be used to simply be enjoyed for their beauty. Small dinosaur models can be a great way to bring the prehistoric world to life, and they can provide hours of fun and enjoyment for people of all ages.
They are roughly raptor-sized but unusually elongated, approximately 6 to 7 feet high and 16 feet long. Their large, thin wings have partially translucent skin, giving them an unsettling appearance without turning them into ordinary flying reptiles. The design reportedly went through hundreds of iterations as the filmmakers tried to balance a science-fiction mutation with the anatomy of a believable animal.
The Mutadon’s importance is partly narrative. It is not simply another dinosaur released into the environment. Its sudden attack on a Velociraptor demonstrates that the island’s threats include animals created by human experimentation, and that the expedition cannot assume the familiar rules of the older Jurassic species still apply.
11. Distortus rex, or D-rex
Distortus rex is the film’s principal engineered predator. It was created when an attempt to modify a T. rex went catastrophically wrong. The creature escapes containment in the prologue, survives on Ile Saint-Hubert for 17 years and eventually returns as the central monster threat.
The production design is nearly 26 feet tall, 47 feet long and approximately 20,000 pounds. It has a misshapen, oversized head, bloated legs and two additional gorilla-like arms. Rather than moving like a conventional tyrannosaur, it uses a predominantly quadrupedal gait, which makes its silhouette and movement immediately different from the franchise’s familiar T. rex.
D-rex is therefore best described as an engineered T. rex-derived mutant or a failed genetic experiment based on T. rex. It is not a newly discovered dinosaur genus and should not be presented as a real prehistoric species.
For collectors who want a physical tie-in to the film’s most distinctive monster, the licensed Jurassic World Rebirth Distortus Rex toy is the most specific match. Mattel’s Micro Adventure playset includes six small figures, including Distortus rex, Velociraptor, Pyroraptor, Dimorphodon, Triceratops and Aquilops. That product is merchandise—not evidence that every included figure receives a substantial scene in the finished movie.
The creatures you may have missed
12. Anurognathus
Anurognathus is a tiny green pterosaur flying in the background on Ile Saint-Hubert. It is a previously unseen species in the Jurassic World franchise, with a production estimate of roughly a 20-inch wingspan and a body listed at about 3 feet 5 inches long.
Because the appearance is brief and atmospheric, Anurognathus belongs in the film’s background-creature category rather than alongside the major animals. It was also a pterosaur, not a dinosaur.
Partial, laboratory and specimen appearances
Several additional animals are associated with the completed film through very brief shots, carcasses, laboratory material or secondary creature documentation. They should not be treated as equivalent to the animals that receive full action sequences.
- Parasaurolophus: seen as a carcass near the river while a Dilophosaurus scavenges from it. The animal’s crest makes it one of the easier background species to identify, but it is not an active major character.
- Dunkleosteus: represented by a partial or dead specimen rather than a full aquatic action appearance. It was an armored prehistoric fish, not a dinosaur.
- Apatosaurus: included among the additional minor animals associated with the film’s creature roster, but not presented as a principal set-piece animal.
- Pteranodon: a pterosaur rather than a dinosaur, included in the film’s broader prehistoric-animal imagery rather than the three main DNA-target sequences.
- Brachiosaurus: associated with laboratory or specimen imagery in secondary documentation, not a major living-animal sequence.
- Triceratops: likewise associated with laboratory or specimen material and minor references rather than a substantial story appearance.
This is why creature lists for Jurassic World Rebirth can differ. One list may count only animals with clear, active screen appearances; another may include carcasses, displayed specimens, laboratory imagery and blink-and-miss-them background shots.

What the film’s three DNA targets mean
The three target animals are not selected simply because they are the largest creatures on the island. They organize the expedition around three environments and three types of cinematic spectacle:
- Mosasaurus represents the sea. Its boat attack turns open water into a trap.
- Titanosaurus represents the land. Its herd sequence emphasizes scale, movement and the idea of dinosaurs as living wildlife.
- Quetzalcoatlus represents the air. Its nest sequence turns the vertical space above the characters into a threat and makes the egg central to the mission.
The remaining animals serve different functions. Spinosaurus and T. rex create familiar franchise action; Velociraptor and Dilophosaurus provide callbacks; Dolores supplies wonder and emotional warmth; and Mutadon and Distortus rex show the consequences of trying to manufacture new creatures.
Why toy rosters should not be treated as film rosters
Licensed merchandise often combines the best-known Jurassic animals with new film creatures to make a more appealing product assortment. For example, a Rebirth playset can include Pyroraptor, Dimorphodon, Triceratops and Aquilops even when some of those animals are not prominent in the movie itself.
The same caution applies to building sets. LEGO released six Jurassic World Rebirth sets centered on combinations of Dolores and Aquilops, Velociraptor, Titanosaurus, Mosasaurus, T. rex, Spinosaurus and Quetzalcoatlus. Those sets are useful for identifying the film’s marketable creatures, but merchandise alone cannot prove that a creature has a substantial on-screen role.
How to revisit the creature work
For viewers who want to pause the designs, compare the three DNA targets or inspect the behind-the-scenes creature material, the physical editions are a useful option. Universal released the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD, including collector-oriented formats and a seven-movie collection. A Jurassic World Rebirth Blu-ray or Jurassic World Rebirth 4K UHD edition can be especially useful for studying the practical and visual-effects work, although retailer stock, pricing and edition names vary by region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which creatures in Jurassic World Rebirth are actually dinosaurs?
Spinosaurus, the film’s Titanosaurus, Velociraptor, Aquilops, Tyrannosaurus rex, Dilophosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Compsognathus and the additional dinosaurs associated with minor imagery—Apatosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Brachiosaurus and Triceratops—belong to Dinosauria. Distortus rex is an engineered T. rex-derived mutant rather than a real species.

No. Mosasaurus was a giant marine squamate reptile, more closely related to monitor-lizard relatives than to dinosaurs. The film uses the word dinosaurs broadly for its prehistoric animals, but Mosasaurus is scientifically a different kind of reptile.
Are Quetzalcoatlus and Anurognathus dinosaurs?
No. Both were pterosaurs, a separate group of flying reptiles that lived alongside dinosaurs. Quetzalcoatlus is one of the film’s three DNA targets, while Anurognathus appears only briefly in the background.
Is Distortus rex a real dinosaur?
No. Distortus rex, or D-rex, is fictional. In the film it is a failed genetic experiment based on a T. rex, with extra arms, a distorted head, bloated legs and a mostly quadrupedal gait.
Is the T. rex in Rebirth the same dinosaur from the earlier Jurassic Park films?
No. The film does not identify it as the same individual. Its design is intended to look heavier, healthier and more muscular while retaining the recognizable Jurassic Park silhouette.

The Bottom Line
Jurassic World Rebirth has real dinosaurs, but its roster is broader than the title suggests. Mosasaurus is a marine squamate, Quetzalcoatlus and Anurognathus are pterosaurs, and Mutadon and Distortus rex are fictional engineered animals. The three DNA targets—Titanosaurus, Mosasaurus and Quetzalcoatlus—give the expedition its land, sea and air structure, while the T. rex, Spinosaurus, Velociraptors, Dolores and D-rex supply the film’s main action, emotion and franchise callbacks.
