Why Paul Simon Reunited with Art Garfunkel After Their Bitter Split

Paul Simon’s 1981 reunion with Art Garfunkel began after Simon’s disappointing solo period and a Central Park concert opportunity. The show became a massive success, but the duo’s unresolved creative conflict soon resurfaced.

Paul Simon reunited with Art Garfunkel in 1981 because a struggling solo moment collided with an extraordinary opportunity: Simon’s album One-Trick Pony had, in his own later description, been a flop, while a proposed Central Park concert offered a way to reconnect with the audience that still loved Simon & Garfunkel. Simon initially imagined Garfunkel joining him for only a few songs. The response was so overwhelming that the appearance expanded into a tour and an attempted new Simon & Garfunkel album.

But the reunion did not permanently repair the relationship. The Central Park concert proved that the duo’s songs and harmonies still worked in public. The later failure of the Hearts and Bones project showed that the old private creative partnership had not been restored.

The short answer: opportunity, audience demand, and unfinished business

Simon’s decision was neither a simple publicity stunt nor evidence that every grievance between the two men had disappeared. His own account suggests a mixture of practical and artistic motives.

  • Career pressure: Simon said his 1980 solo album, One-Trick Pony, had underperformed.
  • A rare opportunity: He was asked to take part in a major Central Park concert and considered inviting Garfunkel to sing several familiar songs.
  • Audience demand: Simon & Garfunkel’s catalog remained enormously popular, and the free concert drew more than half a million people.
  • Musical chemistry: Their harmonies still had an emotional and commercial power that neither man could reproduce in quite the same way alone.
  • A willingness to try again: Simon said he decided to put old grievances aside and see whether they could have a good reunited tour.

The reunion therefore began as a limited performance idea. Its scale and reception made a larger revival difficult to resist.

Why Simon and Garfunkel had split in the first place

Simon and Garfunkel had been childhood friends from Queens before becoming one of the most successful recording duos of the 1960s. Their final studio album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, was released in 1970 and won the Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Record of the Year at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards.

That success did not make the partnership easy to sustain. Simon was increasingly focused on writing and recording as a solo artist, while Garfunkel was also pursuing acting, including a role in Catch-22. More fundamentally, the pair’s artistic and professional priorities had diverged. Their working relationship had become strained, and the close day-to-day process that had shaped their earlier records was no longer functioning as before.

The breakup was consequently more than a business decision. Simon and Garfunkel had different ideas about their careers, different ways of working, and unresolved personal resentment. When Simon moved toward a solo career after Bridge Over Troubled Water, the partnership ended even though the music remained popular.

How One-Trick Pony led to the Central Park invitation

Simon’s later explanation places the immediate trigger in 1980 and 1981. His solo album One-Trick Pony had not performed as he hoped. It is important to describe that as Simon’s characterization rather than as an unqualified objective verdict: he called the album a flop when recalling the circumstances years later.

Then came the possibility of a Central Park concert. Simon saw an opportunity to perform for a large audience and considered asking Garfunkel to return for part of the show. The original plan was not necessarily to announce a permanent Simon & Garfunkel comeback. It was closer to a strategic and potentially meaningful guest appearance: bring back the old songs, let the audience hear the familiar harmonies, and make the event special.

That modest idea made sense on several levels. Simon had a reason to reconnect with listeners after a disappointing solo result. Garfunkel could help revive songs that audiences associated strongly with the two of them. And the duo’s catalog—including “Mrs. Robinson,” “Homeward Bound,” “America,” “The Boxer,” “Old Friends,” and “The Sound of Silence”—was still capable of turning a concert into a cultural event.

What happened at the September 19, 1981 Central Park concert

The free concert took place on September 19, 1981, on Central Park’s Great Lawn. More than 500,000 people attended, according to the official Simon & Garfunkel catalog and related accounts. What had been envisioned as a benefit performance became one of the defining large-scale music events of its era.

The set balanced Simon’s solo work with Simon & Garfunkel standards. The duo’s return was not merely symbolic: they performed the songs people had come to hear, and the size and enthusiasm of the crowd demonstrated that the audience still wanted Simon and Garfunkel together.

The concert also contained a disturbing interruption. During “The Late Great Johnny Ace,” a concertgoer rushed the stage, creating a frightening moment that Simon later recalled. It is an important episode in accounts of the performance, but it was not the reason for the reunion. The reunion had already been conceived around the concert opportunity and the duo’s enduring appeal.

The show was recorded and released as The Concert in Central Park in February 1982, with later CD, DVD, and vinyl editions listed in the official catalog. For readers who want to hear the performance at the center of this story, The Concert in Central Park CD/DVD is the most direct archival record of the reunion.

Why one concert became a tour

The Central Park response changed the practical calculation. Simon said the success of the show effectively pushed him toward putting the group back together for a tour. The tour was a hit, confirming that the concert had not been a one-off curiosity. It had tapped into a large and enthusiastic audience.

There was also a creative possibility. Simon and Garfunkel discussed turning the album Simon was working on, Hearts and Bones, into a new Simon & Garfunkel record. That plan matters because it shows that the 1981 reunion was a genuine attempted revival rather than merely a nostalgic appearance arranged for publicity.

In other words, the public success created enough momentum for both men to test whether they could resume their professional partnership. The tour worked. The next studio project did not.

The old creative process was the real problem

The decisive conflict was not whether Simon and Garfunkel could stand onstage together for a set of beloved songs. It was whether they could again make music together in the way that had produced their classic recordings.

Simon described their earlier method as collaborative. He wrote the songs, but the two men worked out the harmonies together and spent time together as friends. That shared process helped create the distinctive Simon & Garfunkel sound: Simon’s songwriting and lead vocals combined with Garfunkel’s voice, phrasing, and role in shaping the arrangements.

During the Hearts and Bones period, Simon said Garfunkel wanted to receive the songs, work on the harmonies independently while away in Switzerland, and send the results back. Simon found that method incompatible with the old partnership. In his view, it no longer generated the sound or creative interaction that had made Simon & Garfunkel effective.

The difference may appear procedural, but it reflected a deeper disagreement. Simon wanted the two men to rebuild a shared working relationship. Garfunkel’s proposed approach allowed for collaboration at a distance, but not the same kind of continuous, face-to-face musical partnership. The Central Park concert had reunited their voices; it had not recreated their former method of making records.

Why Hearts and Bones became a solo album

Simon eventually removed Garfunkel from the planned album, and Hearts and Bones was released as a Paul Simon solo record. It is incorrect to describe the project as a new Simon & Garfunkel album: the proposed reunion recording never materialized.

This outcome explains why the 1981 revival should be described carefully. Simon and Garfunkel did reunite for the Central Park concert and subsequent tour, and they seriously discussed making a new album. But the attempt did not restore the creative partnership that had existed before the 1970 split.

Simon later characterized the reunion as a temporary or “luxurious” bandage over a breakup that had never truly been repaired. The phrase captures the central paradox: the reunion was successful enough to fill a park, sell a tour, and produce a celebrated live release, yet it could not resolve the private and artistic conflict that had ended the duo.

Was the reunion motivated only by money?

No. Financial and career considerations were clearly part of the context, especially Simon’s account of One-Trick Pony and the opportunity to perform in Central Park. But the available evidence does not support reducing the reunion to money alone.

Simon also recognized the extraordinary appeal of the shared repertoire and the audience’s desire to hear it. He chose to ask Garfunkel to participate, agreed to continue after the concert’s success, and said he tried to set aside old grievances for the tour. Those actions indicate at least a sincere willingness to test the relationship again.

The fairest interpretation is mixed: career pragmatism opened the door, public enthusiasm widened it, the music made the reunion compelling, and personal hope made a longer revival worth attempting. The unresolved creative relationship eventually closed that door again.

What happened after the 1981 reunion?

Simon and Garfunkel reunited on later occasions, including a 2007 Gershwin Prize appearance and a performance in 2010. These appearances demonstrate that the pair could still share a stage, but they did not lead to a lasting new Simon & Garfunkel recording partnership.

A 2024 interview added a different kind of postscript. Garfunkel described an emotional meal with Simon during which they hugged, cried, and spoke about making amends before it was too late. That account concerns personal reconciliation and should not be confused with the 1981 professional reunion.

In 1981, the question was whether Simon and Garfunkel could perform and work together again. In the later account, the focus was on repairing a personal relationship. The distinction matters: a moving meeting between former partners is not the same thing as a restored recording duo.

The enduring lesson of the Central Park reunion

Paul Simon brought Art Garfunkel back because the circumstances made the invitation unusually persuasive. A disappointing solo moment gave Simon a practical reason to reconnect with listeners. Central Park supplied the stage. The duo’s catalog supplied the material. More than half a million people supplied unmistakable proof that the audience still cared.

But public chemistry and private collaboration are different things. Simon and Garfunkel could still produce the familiar emotional effect in concert, especially when singing songs that had already become part of the culture. They could not automatically recover the trust, routine, and shared creative process required to make a new album.

That is why the 1981 reunion is best understood as a spectacular temporary revival—not a permanent repair. Simon reopened the partnership because the opportunity was too compelling to ignore. The reunion succeeded onstage, continued through a successful tour, and then exposed the same unresolved differences when the two men tried to create new music together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Hearts and Bones a Simon & Garfunkel album?

What was the main reason the reunion did not last?

The old creative process had not been restored. Simon said that he and Garfunkel no longer worked together on harmonies and arrangements in the collaborative way they had earlier. Their ability to perform the old songs together did not translate into an effective new recording partnership.

The Bottom Line

Paul Simon reunited with Art Garfunkel because a disappointing solo period, a major Central Park opportunity, overwhelming audience demand, and the enduring strength of their music all pointed in the same direction. The reunion was real, but temporary: it produced a landmark concert and successful tour without resolving the creative and personal conflict that had caused the original split.
