The pairing added 10,944 works between January 1, 2025, and January 4, 2026, taking it to 18,512 total works. But that result does not prove Jayce and Viktor are Arcane’s best-written relationship, most canonical romance, most popular pairing overall, or most important bond.
It measures creative output during one unusually favorable post-finale year. That is a meaningful fandom achievement. It is not a critical coronation.
What the ranking actually says
The 2025 AO3 Ship Stats list is an independent project by centreoftheselights, not an official ranking published by Archive of Our Own. It counts the relationship tags that gained the most total public fanworks during a defined period: January 1, 2025, through January 4, 2026.
Under that rule, Jayce/Viktor ranked first, with 10,944 new works and 18,512 works in total. The slash tag is intended to represent a romantic or sexual relationship. It is separate from Jayce & Viktor, the ampersand tag used for a platonic or familial relationship.

That distinction matters, as does the word “gained.” The list is not ordered by all-time archive size, kudos, bookmarks, hits, reader satisfaction, completion rate, prose quality, or the number of active shippers. It is a production-growth table: which tags accumulated the most public works during that window.
The project’s data was collected independently from publicly visible information. It should therefore be treated as useful fandom research, not as an institutional judgment by AO3. The project has also noted that attempts to manipulate the statistics led to deductions for at least one pairing, another reminder that the numbers are produced by a particular methodology rather than handed down as an unquestionable official record.
Why Jayce/Viktor had such a powerful 2025
The timing was exceptionally favorable. Arcane Season Two premiered in three acts on November 9, November 16, and November 23, 2024. The entire 2025 measurement period therefore followed the conclusion of the show’s final season, when interest was still concentrated around its biggest unresolved emotional and thematic questions.
Jayce and Viktor sit directly inside those questions. They are idealist inventors whose collaboration produces Hextech, the technology that reshapes Piltover and affects the wider conflict between Piltover and Zaun. Their partnership is not a minor subplot: it is connected to the series’ central arguments about progress, power, bodily transformation, sacrifice, and the cost of trying to improve the world.

Season Two gives fan creators even more material. Jayce’s decision to use the Hexcore to save Viktor, the consequences of that decision, their ideological separation, and the story’s increasingly cosmic and multiversal scale create a ready-made set of narrative engines:
- partnership and scientific intimacy;
- betrayal and guilt;
- separation and reunion;
- enemies-to-lovers interpretations;
- hurt/comfort and recovery stories;
- fix-it narratives and alternate timelines;
- post-finale reconciliation;
- disability- and body-transformation-centered stories;
- alternate universes built around the laboratory, the academy, or Piltover’s class structure.
A relationship does not need to be explicitly romantic to be highly productive for fanfiction. Jayce and Viktor’s canon bond contains emotional dependence, trust, rupture, sacrifice, and enough interpretive ambiguity to support several different readings at once. Some fans read them as scientific partners and ideological foils. Others read the relationship romantically. Many combine both interpretations. That openness gives writers room to add rather than simply reproduce what the show has already stated.
In other words, the first-place result is not a random fluke. Jayce and Viktor are two of the show’s principal figures, and their conflict reaches the heart of Arcane’s technological and moral stakes. The canon supplied unusually fertile ground at exactly the moment the fandom entered a full year of post-finale production.
Jayce/Viktor’s first place does not mean it had the largest archive
The most revealing comparison is Caitlyn/Vi. That pairing ranked fifth for new works, adding 7,642 during the same period, but had 18,579 total works—slightly more than Jayce/Viktor’s 18,512.

So Jayce/Viktor won the growth race while Caitlyn/Vi had the larger total archive in the figures reported by the project. Those are not contradictory findings. They answer different questions:

Caitlyn/Vi’s position also demonstrates why an annual growth list should not be presented as a timeless popularity hierarchy. A pairing with a long-established archive may add fewer new works in a particular year while remaining more substantial in total output. Conversely, a pairing energized by a recent canon event can grow at extraordinary speed even if its historical archive is not yet the largest.
AO3 tags are not clean, mutually exclusive categories
There is another problem with treating the numbers as a direct measure of ship popularity: relationship tags are author-supplied metadata, and fanworks can contain several relationships at once.
Jayce/Viktor works may also be tagged with Caitlyn/Vi, Ekko/Jinx, Jayce/Mel, or other relationships. A story can include a central pairing, a background pairing, a past relationship, multiple timelines, or a brief relationship that appears in only one chapter. Every applicable tag can contribute to its own total, so the categories overlap rather than dividing the fandom into separate, non-overlapping populations.

It means the list should be read as a record of tagging and publishing activity, not as a census of individual fans. One person can create several works. One work can count toward several relationship totals. A short unfinished fic and a long completed novel can each count as one work. The number says that both were published; it does not say they made equal contributions to readers or to the fandom’s creative history.
Nor does a public-work count include every possible form of engagement. It does not measure private writing, deleted works, discussion, fan art, videos, roleplay, social-media activity, readers who never post, or fans who strongly prefer canon relationships but do not write fanfiction. “Most produced” is a narrower category than “most loved.”
The strongest case for Jayce/Viktor
It would be unfair to dismiss the result as a statistical accident or to claim that Jayce/Viktor has no textual basis. Jayce and Viktor’s relationship is central to the development and weaponization of Hextech. Their shared work gives the partnership narrative weight, while the second season turns their disagreement into one of the show’s largest moral and metaphysical conflicts.
The pairing also has a particularly useful combination of closeness and uncertainty. The series makes their bond important without requiring every viewer to interpret it in the same way. That allows fan creators to explore romantic readings without pretending that the show supplied an unambiguous romance label. It also leaves room for stories that preserve a platonic partnership, examine the damage caused by their choices, or treat romance as one possible extension of a deeper creative and intellectual connection.

From a fanfiction perspective, this flexibility is a strength. A tightly defined canon romance may give writers a clear foundation, but an emotionally intense relationship with unresolved interpretive space can support a wider range of transformations. Jayce/Viktor can be romantic, tragic, antagonistic, tender, speculative, comic, or all of those things in different works.
That is a convincing explanation for why the pairing generated so much work after Season Two. It is also the correct way to celebrate the result: Jayce/Viktor inspired an exceptional amount of creative activity when the fandom had fresh material to process.
Why the result cannot settle Arcane’s relationship debate
1. Growth is not total popularity
The ranking favors momentum. A pairing can win a one-year growth contest because of a recent plot development, a new audience, a major finale, or a wave of creators responding to the same event. That does not establish that it has always been the biggest pairing or that it will remain first in later years.
2. Production is not quality
More works do not automatically mean better writing. Volume can include short experiments, unfinished drafts, prompt responses, crossovers, alternate versions, and works created primarily to capture a moment of enthusiasm. Those forms are valuable in fandom, but they cannot be converted into a quality score simply by counting them.

Caitlyn/Vi has an explicitly romantic canon trajectory. Jayce and Viktor’s canon is built around invention, friendship or partnership, ideological conflict, bodily transformation, and sacrifice, with romantic readings left open to interpretation. A fan may reasonably prefer Jayce/Viktor, but the AO3 result cannot make the relationship more canon than the text establishes.
4. Importance is not one-dimensional
Arcane contains relationships that matter in different ways. Vi and Jinx’s sisterhood is central to the show’s emotional architecture. Caitlyn and Vi’s romance connects personal intimacy to Piltover’s institutions and class divisions. Jayce and Viktor embody the promises and dangers of technological progress. Other relationships illuminate loyalty, family, trauma, power, or political identity.
It would be a category error to use one fanfiction-production statistic to rank all of those bonds on a single scale. A relationship can be more narratively central, more explicitly romantic, more historically established, or more personally meaningful to a viewer without producing the most new AO3 works in one year.

The headline’s word is doing two different jobs. If “deserve” means which pairing earned the top position under the list’s stated formula, Jayce/Viktor deserved it. It added more public works than any other relationship tag in that measurement period.

If “deserve” means which relationship is the best or most important in Arcane, the ranking is inadequate evidence. It cannot decide whether Jayce/Viktor is more emotionally consequential than Vi and Jinx, more canonically romantic than Caitlyn and Vi, or more deserving of attention than relationships whose fan activity is expressed outside the counted category.
That distinction is especially important because a shareable number can quickly become a value judgment. “Jayce/Viktor was the most written pairing this year” is a defensible statement about the dataset. “Jayce/Viktor is Arcane’s definitive relationship” is an interpretation that requires a much larger argument—and cannot be proved by the number alone.
For readers who want more than the ranking
The stats tell us what fans made. They do not show how the show’s visual language, character designs, Hextech machinery, or Piltover-and-Zaun worldbuilding helped make those stories possible. For that production-side context, The Art and Making of Arcane is the more relevant companion than generic merchandise: the hardcover includes concept art, character development, worldbuilding, interviews, and material from both seasons. Availability and pricing can vary by region and retailer.
An officially licensed Arcane: Inventor’s Journal is another natural fit for fans drawn specifically to the Hextech-and-invention angle, although it is a supplementary collectible rather than evidence about the relationship itself.
The verdict
Jayce/Viktor deserved to win this particular growth statistic. The pairing had major characters, an emotionally charged partnership, a freshly concluded season, and a canon conflict that invited romance, tragedy, reconciliation, and alternate interpretations. Its 10,944 new works represent real and remarkable creative energy.
But the statistic does not deserve to be treated as a final verdict on Arcane’s relationships. It does not measure quality, total historical popularity, readership, canonical romance, or cultural importance. It is best understood as a snapshot of what fans chose to make during a concentrated post-finale year.
