If the text shows Mbps, resolution, FPS, codec, buffer, or server information, press your TV or streaming device’s Info, Display, Text, or similar button while the Netflix video is playing. That text is usually a device-level diagnostic or information overlay—not a Netflix subtitle.
If the text contains dialogue, speaker names, music descriptions, or sound effects, open Netflix’s Audio & Subtitles menu and choose Off or None. The correct fix depends on what the text actually says.
First, identify what the text is
Look at the wording in the upper-left corner before changing settings. There are three common possibilities:

This distinction is important. Netflix controls subtitles and captions, but a persistent technical readout is normally generated by the television, streaming stick, game console, Blu-ray player, cable box, or another playback device.

Fastest fix for technical numbers: press Info or Display
- Leave the Netflix title playing. Do not remain on the Netflix home screen.
- Press the remote button labeled Info, Display, Text, Status, or something similar.
- Wait a moment to see whether the upper-left text disappears.
- If it does not, press the same button once more. Some devices cycle through information screens before hiding them.
On newer remotes, the information control may be hidden behind an asterisk, three-dot, multifunction, or virtual-number-pad button. The label and behavior vary by television and streaming-device model.
There is no single Netflix-approved button combination that hides this type of overlay on every TV, browser, streaming stick, console, and set-top box. Avoid relying on a key sequence that works on a different model. If you cannot find the control, search the manual for your exact model using terms such as information display, on-screen display, diagnostic overlay, or status screen.
If the text is dialogue or captions
Turn off subtitles through Netflix rather than the TV’s information controls:
- Start the movie or episode.
- Reveal the playback controls. On a computer or phone, click or tap the screen. On many TVs, streaming players, consoles, and Blu-ray players, press the remote’s up or down arrow. On Apple TV, swipe up or press the up arrow.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Under subtitles or captions, choose Off, None, or the equivalent option shown on your device.
Netflix’s menu labels can differ slightly by device and title. If the text remains after subtitles are set to off, inspect it again: technical values such as resolution and bitrate indicate a device overlay, not a caption track.

There is also an exception. Some programs retain translated dialogue when characters speak a language different from the title’s primary language, even when ordinary subtitle preferences are off. In that situation, the remaining text may be intentional translation rather than a malfunction.
How to remove a TV or source-device overlay
If the text identifies an input, channel, resolution, or signal, check the television or the device sending the picture:
- Built-in smart-TV Netflix app: Try the TV remote’s Info, Display, or Text control.
- Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, or another streaming player: Check both the player remote and the television remote. The overlay may belong to either device.
- Game console, Blu-ray player, or cable box: Test the source device’s information or display button while Netflix is playing through it.
- Only one HDMI input: Investigate that HDMI source, cable box, console, or display input before changing Netflix settings.
- Only one television: Look up that television’s model-specific on-screen-display instructions.
If the text appears across several devices, the cause may instead be a Netflix app issue, browser extension, accessibility feature, casting source, or screen-overlay utility. That pattern makes a single TV remote setting less likely.
If Info or Display does not remove it
Use these steps in order. Stop as soon as the overlay disappears.

1. Exit the title completely
Leave playback and return to the Netflix home screen. Start the same title again. Merely pausing may leave a device information panel active.
2. Restart the television or streaming device
Turn the device off completely, leave it powered down briefly, and turn it back on. If you use a separate streaming player, restart both the player and the TV. Then open Netflix and test playback again.
3. Update the device and Netflix
Install available television, streaming-player, console, or firmware updates. Also install any available Netflix app update. Device-level overlays are controlled by the playback hardware and its software, so updating Netflix alone may not change them.
4. Sign out and back in
If the problem is limited to one Netflix app installation, signing out and signing back in can refresh the app session. This is more useful for persistent app behavior than for a TV-generated information panel.

5. Reinstall or reset only as a later step
Reinstalling Netflix, clearing its app data, or resetting a device can remove local downloads and may sign you out. Use these steps only after a restart and update have failed, and make sure you know your Netflix sign-in details first.
Computer-specific troubleshooting
Netflix documents keyboard shortcuts for playback functions such as play/pause, full-screen, rewind, fast-forward, volume, mute, and skipping introductions. It does not document one universal keyboard shortcut for hiding every diagnostic overlay.
On a computer, try the following:
- Exit full-screen playback and reload the Netflix page.
- Close and reopen the browser.
- Test Netflix in a supported, up-to-date browser.
- Temporarily check whether a browser extension, screen recorder, accessibility utility, graphics tool, or other overlay is drawing the text.
- Restart the computer if the text remains over other video or browser windows.
Do not treat undocumented combinations such as Ctrl + Shift + Alt + D as an official, universal Netflix fix. A shortcut that exposes playback statistics in one environment may do nothing—or trigger another function—in a different browser or app.
What not to do
- Do not change subtitle settings for bitrate or resolution statistics. Captions cannot normally control a TV’s diagnostic display.
- Do not assume every upper-left message is from Netflix. TVs and source devices commonly place their own status information there.
- Do not use a random brand-specific button sequence. Remote functions differ between models and software versions.
- Do not install PC-cleanup or optimization software to fix a TV overlay. A Windows repair utility does not remove an on-screen display generated by a television or streaming player.
- Do not reset the device before trying the free remote-control fix. A reset can remove settings, downloads, and account sessions without addressing the actual source.
When to contact support
Contact the television or streaming-device manufacturer when the text is technical, appears only on that device, and remains after pressing the available information controls and restarting the hardware. Have the exact model number, operating-system version, input or app being used, and a photo of the overlay ready.

Contact Netflix when subtitles behave incorrectly across multiple supported devices, the Audio & Subtitles menu is missing or malfunctioning, or the same unexpected text appears in several Netflix installations. If the text appears only on an external display, one HDMI input, or one casting setup, troubleshoot that display or source device first.
If your remote is missing or damaged
You do not need to buy anything to try the main fix: first look for the information control in the TV’s on-screen menus or use the device’s official remote app if one is available. If you need a replacement, a universal TV remote with an Info button may help, but compatibility is model-dependent. Check that it supports your exact television or streaming device and that its buttons expose the required Info, Display, or Text function. A model-specific replacement remote is often safer than a generic one.
Buying note: A replacement remote is an optional convenience, not a Netflix requirement. Verify the TV model, remote pairing method, and button layout before ordering.
