Open the Google app on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad, tap the microphone, choose Search a song, and hum, whistle, sing, or play the tune for about 10–15 seconds. Google will return potential matches that you can check by listening to the song, reading its lyrics, or opening its music video.
If Google does not recognize the melody, try SoundHound for another humming-focused search. Use Shazam instead when the original recording is actually playing nearby or inside another app; Shazam is designed primarily for recorded audio, not for identifying a tune from memory.
Find a song by humming with Google
Google’s Song Search feature is available through the Google app on Android and iPhone or iPad. It accepts a hummed, whistled, or sung melody as well as a recording of the song itself. Google describes the results as potential or likely matches, so listen to the suggested track before treating it as a confirmed identification.
Google explains that its system turns the melody into a numerical sequence and compares it with song representations. The process attempts to reduce the importance of the singer’s voice and accompanying instruments, which is why you do not need to reproduce the original vocalist exactly. You still need to provide a reasonably recognizable melodic phrase. Google’s explanation of Hum to Search describes the underlying approach and its limitations.

Android instructions
- Open the Google app.
- Tap the microphone icon in the search bar.
- Choose Search a song.
- Hum, whistle, sing, or play the melody for roughly 10–15 seconds.
- Review the potential matches and tap the closest result.
On some Android devices, Song Search may also be available through Circle to Search, Quick Settings, a home-screen shortcut, or Gemini. Those options can vary by country, language, device, and account. The Google app is therefore the most dependable general route. Google’s current Song Search help page lists the available access methods and instructions.
iPhone and iPad instructions
- Open the Google app. This is separate from the standard Safari browser.
- Tap the microphone icon in the search bar.
- Tap Search a song.
- Hum, whistle, sing, or play the tune.
- Select the most convincing match.
After selecting a result, Google can provide options to listen to the song, read lyrics, or watch a music video. The Google iOS instructions specifically document humming, whistling, and singing as supported inputs.
Use SoundHound when you remember only the tune
SoundHound is the strongest dedicated alternative for a melody that exists only in your memory. Open the app, press its SoundHound button, and sing or hum the tune. Its consumer app also identifies music that is currently playing and can provide song information, lyrics, playback options, and links or integrations involving YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify.
SoundHound’s consumer listing confirms humming and singing support. Its separate business-facing recognition materials describe additional technical capabilities, but those claims should not be interpreted as a guaranteed success rate or response time for every consumer search. If the first result looks plausible, play it and compare the chorus, opening phrase, or other section you remember.

Find a song by humming on YouTube
On Android, YouTube includes a song-search option that can accept either a hum or a recording of music currently playing. This is especially useful if your main goal is to find a playable YouTube video rather than merely obtain the song title.
- Open the YouTube app on Android.
- Tap the search or voice-search control.
- Switch from ordinary voice search to song search or search by sound, depending on the label shown.
- Hum the melody or let YouTube hear the recording.
- Review the related videos, Shorts, or official music results.
YouTube’s official song-search help documents the Android feature. Labels and availability can change by device, region, and app version.
Use Shazam when the song is actually playing
Shazam is usually the wrong first choice when all you have is a remembered melody. Its documented strength is recognizing a recording that is playing around you or inside another app, such as a television, radio, speaker, TikTok, YouTube, or music app. It can also work while you are listening through headphones.
If you can replay even a short section of the original recording, stop humming and use Shazam’s identify function. Recorded-audio recognition and hummed-melody matching are different tasks: Google, SoundHound, and YouTube document humming or singing input, while Shazam’s official consumer guidance focuses on music that is already playing.

How to hum so recognition services have a better chance
- Choose the chorus or hook. The most recognizable melodic phrase is generally more useful than a vague rhythm or a single note.
- Provide around 10–15 seconds. This is Google’s suggested humming duration. A shorter sample can work, but a longer, steady phrase gives the service more melody to compare.
- Keep a consistent tempo. You do not need to match the original speed perfectly, but avoid stopping and restarting halfway through the phrase.
- Use a neutral sound. Hum on “mmm,” sing the notes, or whistle—whichever makes the pitch movement easiest for you to reproduce. Google supports all three input styles, and SoundHound explicitly supports humming and singing.
- Do not talk over the melody. Background speech, television audio, traffic, and other voices can make the sample harder to interpret.
- Keep the microphone clear. Do not cover the phone’s microphone, and search in a relatively quiet room.
- Try a different section. If the chorus fails, repeat the opening phrase, a recurring instrumental motif, or another part you remember clearly.
These are practical ways to improve the input, not guaranteed accuracy rules. The services do not publish one universal consumer accuracy figure covering every genre, language, song catalog, humming ability, and recording condition.
What to do when humming produces no result
- Repeat the search with the strongest phrase. Replace an indistinct verse with the chorus or the repeated hook.
- Change the input style. Try singing instead of humming, or whistle if the pitch contour is easier to reproduce.
- Search with both Google and SoundHound. They are separate recognition systems, so a failed result in one does not establish that the song cannot be identified.
- Switch to recorded-audio recognition. If you can find the song playing in a video, television program, radio broadcast, or another app, use Shazam or the ordinary identify-what-is-playing mode in Google, SoundHound, or YouTube.
- Check the suggested result manually. Listen to the relevant section instead of relying only on a similar title, artist, or thumbnail.
A melody may be difficult to identify if the song is classical, traditional, obscure, unreleased, heavily remixed, or absent from the service’s catalog. A tune may also produce misleading matches when its rhythm is clearer than its pitch or when the remembered version differs substantially from the recorded version.
How to verify that the result is really your song
Recognition tools return candidates, not proof. Once a service suggests a title:
- Play the chorus or the section you remember.
- Compare the rise and fall of the melody, not just the beat.
- Check whether the vocalist, language, instruments, and approximate era match your memory.
- Look for an alternate recording, live version, remix, or cover if the melody is right but the sound is different.
- After confirming it, use the result’s available links to listen to the track or save it to a playlist in a supported music service.
That final listening check matters because a familiar chord progression, sampled hook, cover version, or related artist can produce a result that seems convincing at first but is not the recording you meant.

Does humming require perfect pitch?
No. Google says its system is designed not to depend on perfect pitch and attempts to reduce the effect of the singer’s timbre and accompaniment. However, that does not mean every imperfect or incomplete melody will be recognized. The more clearly you reproduce the contour of a distinctive phrase, the more useful the search is likely to be.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you find a song by humming from a web browser?
The most consistently documented route is the Google app on Android, iPhone, or iPad. Some Google and YouTube access points may appear in particular devices or versions, but availability varies. If you cannot find the feature in a browser, install or open the relevant mobile app and look for the microphone option and the Search a song or song-search control.

How long should I hum for a song search?
Aim for about 10–15 seconds, preferably the chorus, hook, or another distinctive phrase. Keep a steady tempo and avoid speaking over the sample.
Why did the app identify the wrong song?
The result is a potential match rather than a guarantee. Similar melodies, covers, remixes, indistinct humming, background noise, or an unavailable catalog entry can lead to an incorrect suggestion. Listen to the result and try another phrase or service.
The Bottom Line
Open the Google app, tap the microphone, choose Search a song, and hum the clearest 10–15-second section you remember. Try SoundHound if Google fails, YouTube song search if you want a video, and Shazam only when the original recording is actually playing. Always listen to the suggested track to verify the match.
