They are memorable because each turns a concrete object or phrase into a much larger argument about entitlement, boundaries, hospitality, class, grief, or family loyalty.
This is a curated canon, not an official ranking. The posts are anonymous, usually one-sided, and vulnerable to deletion, editing, reposting, exaggeration, and fabrication. The safest way to discuss them is to say what the poster or thread described—not to present every allegation as independently verified fact.
What makes an AITA story great?
The subreddit commonly known as AITA—short for Am I the Asshole?—asks people to describe a non-violent interpersonal conflict and invite a community judgment. Its familiar verdicts form a compact moral vocabulary:
- YTA: You’re the Asshole.
- NTA: Not the Asshole.
- ESH: Everyone Sucks Here.
- NAH: No Assholes Here.
- INFO: More information is needed before judging.
That format produces something unusual: part advice column, part first-person micro-story, and part crowd-sourced moral theater. A post may begin with a question about leftovers, a cake ingredient, or fruit falling onto a road, then expand into a debate about property rights, class privilege, family obligation, or whether a relationship is fundamentally unhealthy.

For this list, “greatest” means stories that score highly on several narrative qualities:
- Recognizability within Reddit culture. The story has circulated beyond its original thread or become shorthand in later discussions.
- A vivid central object or phrase. A six-foot sub, Iranian yogurt, coconuts, and a fatalistic sentence are easier to remember than an abstract disagreement.
- A disproportion between trigger and consequence. A small dispute produces a breakup, family rupture, public outrage, or an enormous comment war.
- Narrative self-exposure. The narrator’s own version of events may unintentionally reveal entitlement, insecurity, or a lack of perspective.
- Moral ambiguity or comic disproportion. The best threads leave readers arguing about where ordinary selfishness ends and genuine wrongdoing begins.
These criteria explain why the following stories remain part of the AITA canon. They are not presented as verified documentaries of real events. They are influential examples of online moral storytelling.
The five landmark AITA stories
| Story | Central object or phrase | The deeper argument |
|---|---|---|
| Six-foot party sub | A party sandwich | Reciprocity, informal fairness, and food as social property |
| Iranian yogurt | A yogurt collection | Boundaries, hoarding-like behavior, and the difference between a stated dispute and the real issue |
| Coconut thief | A fallen coconut | Property, privilege, pettiness, and adult power directed at a child |
| Coconut carrot cake | A disliked ingredient | Hospitality, the guest of honor’s wishes, and food aversions |
| Six feet in the ground | A devastating family phrase | Estrangement, grief, trauma, and the limits of crowd judgment |
1. The six-foot party sub: when a sandwich becomes a referendum on reciprocity
The story titled AITA because I ate more than “my share” of a 6-foot party sub last night? is the perfect comic gateway into AITA culture. According to the poster’s account, a friend bought a six-foot party sub for a UFC gathering. The poster had also brought homemade wings, but other people ate those wings. Later, the poster consumed more than what others considered an informal share of the remaining sandwich.
The captured version of the Reddit thread attracted more than 34,000 positive votes, an extraordinary level of attention for a dispute that appears to concern nothing more consequential than party food. Its appeal lies in the mismatch between the object and the reaction. A sandwich is finite, divisible, and easy to picture. The social accounting around it is not.
Why the story works
The poster’s own framing makes the story unusually self-aware. The question is not simply whether one person ate a lot. It is whether the poster’s contribution of wings gave them a stronger claim to the sub, whether the food was bought for everyone equally, and whether an informal portion can become a real obligation after the fact.
That creates several competing ideas of fairness:
- Equal-share fairness: everyone at the gathering should receive roughly the same amount.
- Contribution-based fairness: someone who supplied food that others consumed may feel entitled to more of another dish.
- Ownership-based fairness: the person who bought the sub may have the strongest say over how it is divided.
- Social-expectation fairness: guests should understand that party food is communal, even when no portions were formally assigned.
The thread is funny because the participants appear to be conducting serious moral arithmetic over a party sub. It is also revealing. AITA readers are often less interested in the literal number of bites than in what the food represents: reciprocity, recognition, and the resentment that follows when a contribution feels invisible.
The six-foot sub story also demonstrates the genre’s most reliable engine: a narrator presents a case, but the details invite readers to notice what the narrator may have overlooked. The crowd becomes a jury, etiquette panel, and amateur social psychologist at once.
2. The Iranian yogurt: the object that became a diagnosis of the argument
The phrase “the Iranian yogurt is not the issue here” has outlived the original dispute. In the reported scenario, one partner objected to the other’s extensive yogurt collection in a small apartment. The perishable items were thrown out, and the argument became entangled with the provenance and legality of Iranian and Cuban yogurt.

The details are so specific that they initially sound like the entire conflict. Yet the memorable line insists that the yogurt is only a symptom. The underlying dispute is about boundaries, possessions, living space, and behavior that one partner experiences as excessive or hoarding-like. The yogurt is simply the prop that makes the relationship dynamic visible.

Why the phrase escaped Reddit
AITA commenters frequently reinterpret the question they are given. A poster may ask, “Was I wrong to object to this one thing?” The replies may say, in effect, “That one thing is evidence of a much larger pattern.” The Iranian-yogurt phrase became a portable way to describe that move.
People now use it when a highly specific argument appears to conceal the real problem: an unequal relationship, a chronic boundary violation, a refusal to compromise, or a pattern of controlling behavior. The expression works because it is both literal and metaphorical. There really is yogurt in the account, but the moral question has moved elsewhere.
The story also illustrates the importance of separating the original post from its afterlife. The original thread became difficult to access, while later discussions, explanations, and reproduced versions kept the phrase alive. Those secondary versions may summarize, omit, rearrange, or embellish details. The story is therefore best described as a thread that circulated in several forms, not as a single perfectly preserved record.
The real question beneath the yogurt
The enduring debate is not whether someone is allowed to collect a particular food. It is whether a shared home imposes limits on one person’s possessions, and how those limits should be negotiated. One reader may see a reasonable objection to clutter and waste. Another may see an unacceptable attempt to control a partner’s belongings. The story is powerful because the unusual object does not settle the relationship question; it makes the question impossible to ignore.
3. The coconut that a child carried away: property rights versus proportionality
In the coconut story, titled AITA for shouting at a little boy who ran away with our coconut?, the narrator describes coconut trees inside a private compound. Coconuts sometimes fell toward a public street, where a child and a security guard reportedly raced to retrieve them. On one occasion, the narrator scolded a little boy who picked up a coconut and ran away with it.
The narrator also says the household is well off and has enough coconuts. That detail changes the moral optics. The dispute is no longer merely about whether the fruit belongs to the compound. It becomes a question of why an adult would use authority to confront a child over an item the household does not need.
Why readers judged it harshly
Leading Reddit reactions commonly judged the narrator YTA. The strongest criticism was about proportionality: even if the coconut technically belonged to the household, shouting at a child over a fallen piece of fruit seemed needlessly aggressive. The child’s actions could be understood as opportunistic, but the adult’s response appeared to carry the greater social power.
Some commenters instead focused on local property law and the status of fruit that falls onto a public street. That is an important complication, but it does not automatically answer the moral question. Legal ownership and moral blame are related but not interchangeable. A person can have a legal claim to something and still behave badly in the way that claim is enforced.
The coconut story is therefore about at least four kinds of possession:

- Physical possession: who picked up the coconut?
- Legal ownership: where did the tree stand, and what local rules applied to fallen fruit?
- Social entitlement: who reasonably expected to take it?
- Moral proportionality: was confrontation justified given the value of the object and the age of the person involved?
Its continued appeal comes from the tension between those categories. A technical defense can be correct and still feel morally insufficient. The story turns a coconut into a miniature debate about wealth, public space, childhood, and the privileges of being able to let a minor loss go.
4. The coconut carrot cake: when a preference becomes a test of hospitality
The related carrot-cake story involves the same highly divisive ingredient but a very different moral setup. The narrator makes a birthday carrot cake containing coconut after asking the birthday person whether coconut should be included. The birthday person’s mother-in-law strongly dislikes coconut. When the cake is served, the mother-in-law refuses it and leaves, and the father-in-law accuses the narrator of being inconsiderate.
Recommended Free Tools
Commenters largely treated the birthday person’s preference as decisive, particularly because the mother-in-law did not have an allergy. They also recognized an important qualification: a severe food aversion can be genuine and distressing even when it is not medically dangerous. The absence of an allergy does not mean a person must enjoy an ingredient or eat around it.
Why this dispute differs from the coconut-tree story
The two coconut stories are useful as a pair because they ask opposite questions about access and obligation.
- In the coconut-tree story, the narrator tries to prevent someone else from taking an excess resource.
- In the carrot-cake story, the narrator decides whether to adapt a shared food to accommodate a guest’s strong dislike.
The first conflict is about enforcing ownership against a child. The second is about deciding whose preference governs a birthday event. The moral answer depends partly on the role of the food: a host may reasonably want to make one cake for the person being celebrated, while a guest may reasonably decline an ingredient they cannot tolerate.
The birthday person’s wishes give the cake story a clear center. It was their birthday, and the cake was made with their approval. That does not make every choice automatically considerate. It does, however, explain why commenters were reluctant to let an adult guest’s dislike override the celebrant’s preference.
The story also shows why AITA debates can become unfair when readers treat non-allergic food aversions as trivial. Personal taste is not a medical emergency, but it still shapes whether a guest can comfortably participate. The better question is not simply whether the mother-in-law was entitled to avoid coconut. She was. The question is whether everyone else was obligated to redesign the birthday cake around that avoidance. The thread’s dominant answer was no.
5. “Six feet in the ground”: the darker edge of the AITA canon
Not every landmark AITA story is comic. A widely circulated thread centers on a narrator telling their parents that they have only one daughter and that she is “six feet in the ground.” An accessible archived reproduction presents it as a highly upvoted and emotionally extreme family-estrangement story.
The line is memorable because it is rhetorically final. It does not invite negotiation or describe a temporary disagreement. It declares that, in the narrator’s account, a family relationship has been buried. That makes the story valuable for understanding the range of AITA storytelling, but it also makes it inappropriate to treat as a punchline alongside the party-sub and coconut posts.

Why it belongs in a broader history of the format
This story shows how the judgment structure can become a vehicle for trauma disclosure. AITA is often associated with comic disputes over food, chores, guests, and wedding etiquette, but the same format also receives stories about estrangement, grief, abuse allegations, and long-running family damage.

That is precisely where caution is needed. A crowd cannot verify the family history from a single anonymous account. It cannot know the impact of a public post on the people described. And a forceful phrase may express genuine pain, strategic rhetoric, or both.
The story’s significance is not that the wording proves the narrator right or wrong. It is that AITA can transform private trauma into a public moral scene, where strangers are asked to validate a boundary or condemn a family member without access to the full history.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why these stories keep circulating
They make abstract morality physical
Most interpersonal conflicts are difficult to summarize. People argue about respect, reciprocity, control, or neglect, but those concepts become easier to debate when attached to something tangible. A sandwich can stand for unequal contribution. Yogurt can stand for a boundary dispute. A coconut can stand for privilege. A cake ingredient can stand for whose comfort matters. A grave-deep phrase can stand for the end of a family bond.
They invite readers to notice the narrator’s bias
The first-person format is a major part of AITA’s appeal. Readers do not receive an omniscient account. They receive a strategically selected version, often written by someone seeking exoneration. Sometimes the poster supplies details that weaken their own case. Sometimes the omissions are more revealing than the stated facts.

The question is not only “What happened?” but also “Why did the narrator choose these details, and what do they assume the audience will find reasonable?” The crowd’s verdict is shaped by that presentation as much as by the underlying event.
The labels create a shared grammar
YTA and NTA are faster than a paragraph of moral analysis, but they do not eliminate analysis. They give readers a starting position, after which comments explain whether the problem was selfishness, dishonesty, double standards, aggression, or a failure to communicate. ESH and NAH are especially useful when a story resists a simple hero-and-villain structure. INFO acknowledges that a missing fact may change the verdict entirely.
The best lines become cultural shorthand
“The Iranian yogurt is not the issue here” survives because it names a recurring pattern in ordinary language. It can be applied to almost any argument where the stated object is less important than the behavior surrounding it. That kind of portability gives a post a life beyond its original votes.
The stories adapt easily to audio and video
AITA posts have a built-in narrative shape: setup, disputed action, context, and judgment. That makes them easy to read aloud, discuss on podcasts, or turn into online commentary. The story is short enough to consume quickly but open-ended enough to generate disagreement. Continued circulation outside the original thread is one reason these posts function more like internet folklore than like a conventional archive.

How much should readers believe?
The responsible answer is: believe that the post existed in some form, but do not automatically believe that every event occurred exactly as described.
AITA submissions are generally anonymous and one-sided. Posts may be deleted, edited, reposted, or preserved in incomplete archive copies. Comments and moderator text can be mistaken for part of the original submission. Later retellings may combine details from different versions. Academic research can show that AITA is a substantial corpus of first-person moral narratives, but studying those narratives does not authenticate the individual events they describe.
The wider Reddit-story ecosystem has also faced concerns about alleged fabricated and AI-generated posts. That context is a reason to use careful language, not a reason to declare a particular story fake without evidence. For all five stories here, the appropriate phrasing is “the poster says,” “the thread describes,” or “the story circulated as an account of.”
A reader’s checklist for judging an AITA post
- Separate facts from framing. Identify what the poster directly describes and what they infer about someone else’s motives.
- Look for the missing relationship history. A single incident can look very different in a long pattern of behavior.
- Distinguish harm from inconvenience. A disliked ingredient, a lost snack, and a serious safety issue should not receive identical moral weight.
- Ask who had power. Age, money, housing, employment, and family authority can change the meaning of an apparently minor confrontation.
- Do not confuse legality with decency. Ownership or permission may answer one question without answering whether the response was proportionate.
- Watch for medical and trauma claims. Commenters cannot diagnose strangers, and the absence of a formal diagnosis does not make distress unreal.
- Treat the verdict as a crowd reaction. YTA or NTA is not a legal finding, professional assessment, or objective statement of moral truth.
What not to do with these stories
The distance between an entertaining thread and real-world harm can be very short. Readers should not brigade a post, contact the people described, search for identities, or treat speculation in the comments as evidence. Reproducing usernames or identifying details is rarely necessary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If a story is being cited in a documentary, podcast, article, or video, the version being quoted should be identified honestly. A later retelling is not automatically equivalent to the original thread.
The enduring appeal of AITA
The greatest AITA stories are not great because Reddit has discovered a perfect method for determining who is morally right. They are great because they compress messy human conflicts into memorable scenes. The food is concrete, the wording is quotable, and the judgment is immediate. Yet the real subject is almost always larger than the object at the center.
The six-foot sub asks whether generosity creates a claim on someone else’s food. The Iranian yogurt asks whether an apparently ridiculous possession is masking a serious relationship boundary. The coconut stories ask when ownership becomes pettiness and when accommodation becomes unreasonable. The six-feet-in-the-ground story asks what happens when the format is used to make trauma public and final.
That combination of vivid props, incomplete information, and communal judgment explains why these threads continue to circulate even when the original posts are edited or disappear. They are not reliable records of everything that happened. They are records of how people narrate conflict—and how thousands of strangers decide what a narrator’s version seems to mean.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the famous AITA stories verified as true?
Usually not. AITA posts are anonymous, one-sided, and sometimes deleted, edited, reposted, or fabricated. These stories should be described as accounts supplied by posters or threads circulated online, not as independently verified events.
What does YTA mean on Reddit?
YTA means “You’re the Asshole.” Other common AITA labels are NTA, or Not the Asshole; ESH, or Everyone Sucks Here; NAH, or No Assholes Here; and INFO, meaning that more information is needed.
Why is the Iranian yogurt story so famous?
The phrase “the Iranian yogurt is not the issue here” became shorthand for an argument whose stated subject is really a symptom of a deeper problem, such as boundary violations, controlling behavior, or a dysfunctional relationship dynamic.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: the greatest AITA stories are miniature moral dramas, not authenticated case files. Their staying power comes from the contrast between an absurdly specific object—a sub, a yogurt collection, a coconut, or a cake ingredient—and the serious human question underneath. Read them for the narrative and the social insight, but keep the verdict provisional and the facts attributed to the people who posted them.
