The correct way to watch the seven released Scream movies is in release order—which is also the chronological story order: Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2011), Scream (2022), Scream VI (2023), and Scream 7 (2026).

There is no complicated alternate timeline. The main point of confusion is that the fifth film is officially titled Scream, just like the 1996 original. To avoid mixing them up, this guide identifies that legacy sequel as Scream (2022), sometimes called Scream 5 informally.

The Scream movies in order

  1. Scream (1996)
  2. Scream 2 (1997)
  3. Scream 3 (2000)
  4. Scream 4 (2011)
  5. Scream (2022) (often called Scream 5)
  6. Scream VI (2023)
  7. Scream 7 (2026)

For a first viewing, watch all seven in this sequence. It preserves the development of the recurring characters, the franchise’s changing commentary on sequels and reboots, and the continuity connecting the original survivors to the newer generation.

Why release order and chronological order are the same

Unlike some long-running horror franchises, Scream does not require a timeline rearrangement. Each film follows the preceding entry in the story, even when the setting, cast of characters, or filmmaking subject changes.

The only title-related trap is the 2022 movie. It is not a remake of the 1996 film and should not be watched first. Its official title is simply Scream, but it is a direct legacy sequel that takes place 25 years after the original and follows events from the earlier films.

1. Scream (1996)

What it is about: Wes Craven’s original film introduces Woodsboro, California, Sidney Prescott, and the Ghostface persona. After a series of murders begins, Sidney and her friends become targets while trying to work out who is behind the killings.

The movie established the formula that defines the series: slasher suspense, dark humor, commentary on horror-film rules, and a mystery surrounding the identity of the killer. It also introduces the central recurring survivors—Sidney, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley.

Why it comes first: Every later film builds on the events, relationships, and consequences introduced here. It is the foundation for the franchise’s recurring Ghostface-mystery structure.

Spoiler-light continuity note: Ghostface is a persona adopted by different killers. Ghostface is not one supernatural being or a single individual who returns unchanged in every movie.

2. Scream 2 (1997)

What it is about: Sidney is now attending Windsor College when a new Ghostface killing spree begins among students and people connected to the first film’s survivors.

The sequel treats the murders as a kind of real-life sequel, allowing the film to comment on the expectations and conventions surrounding horror follow-ups. It expands the story beyond Woodsboro while bringing back important characters from the original.

Why watch it second: Scream 2 directly follows the first film and assumes that viewers know Sidney, Gale, Dewey, and the events of the Woodsboro murders. Watching it out of sequence would remove much of its character and story context.

Rank #2

3. Scream 3 (2000)

What it is about: The action moves to Hollywood, where members of the cast of Stab 3—the fictional film based on the earlier killings—are murdered. Sidney has been living in guarded seclusion, but the new crimes pull her and other survivors back into the mystery.

Scream 3 is the most overtly focused on a movie-within-a-movie. Its targets include the machinery of Hollywood, celebrity culture, horror production, and the way real tragedies can be transformed into entertainment.

Why it matters to the larger series: It concludes the original trilogy and continues the consequences of the first two films rather than starting a separate story. It also develops the franchise’s habit of using each new setting to examine a different kind of sequel or entertainment-industry convention.

4. Scream 4 (2011)

What it is about: Ten years after the original Woodsboro murders, Sidney returns to town while promoting her self-help book, Out of Darkness. Ghostface reappears and targets Sidney, her cousin Jill Roberts, and a new group of teenagers. Gale and Dewey also return.

Why it matters: This is the final Scream film directed by Wes Craven and an important bridge between the original survivor trio and a younger generation of characters. It remains part of the same continuity; it is not a reboot.

Watching Scream 4 before the 2022 film is especially important because the later movie continues the franchise’s conversation about legacy characters, new protagonists, remakes, reboots, and the expectations placed on a long-running horror series.

5. Scream (2022), sometimes called Scream 5

What it is about: Set 25 years after the first Woodsboro killings, this film introduces a new group of teenagers connected to the town’s history. Sidney, Gale, and Dewey return to the story, alongside new survivors including Sam Carpenter and Tara Carpenter.

The title explained: The official title is Scream, without a number. Because it is the fifth film, viewers and informal movie guides often call it Scream 5. Use the release year to distinguish it from the 1996 original.

Why it belongs after Scream 4: This is a legacy sequel, not a new starting point. It directly draws on the earlier Woodsboro story and the original characters. Putting it first would make its references to the franchise’s past—including the significance of Sidney, Gale, and Dewey—less meaningful.

6. Scream VI (2023)

What it is about: After the events of the 2022 film, the younger survivors leave Woodsboro for New York City. Ghostface follows them, moving the series from its familiar California setting into a much larger urban environment.

The film continues the storyline of the new generation and features returning characters including Gale Weathers and Kirby Reed.

What about Sidney Prescott? Sidney does not appear in Scream VI, although the character is referenced. Her absence does not make the film a spin-off. Scream VI remains part of the main film continuity and follows directly from the 2022 entry.

Why watch it sixth: The film’s character relationships and opening situation depend on the events of Scream (2022), so it should not be treated as an independent New York-set slasher.

7. Scream 7 (2026)

What it is about: As of August 11, 2026, Scream 7 is the latest released movie in the franchise. It returns to Sidney Prescott’s story. The official premise places Sidney in Indiana, where a new Ghostface threatens her daughter, Tatum, played by Isabel May.

Kevin Williamson directed the film, and Neve Campbell returned as Sidney. It opened theatrically in the United States on February 27, 2026.

Why it comes last: Scream 7 follows the six earlier films and returns the focus to one of the franchise’s defining characters. It should be watched after Scream VI, even though Sidney was absent from that installment.

The status of “latest” is date-sensitive: future releases or announcements could change it. The order above reflects the seven films released as of August 11, 2026.

Best viewing strategy for first-time viewers

Watch all seven in release order

The best approach is simply to follow the numbered list above without skipping entries. The franchise’s appeal is not only the individual Ghostface mysteries; it is also the way each film responds to the horror conventions and industry trends of its moment.

  • Start with Scream (1996) to meet the original characters and understand the rules of the series.
  • Continue through Scream 2 and Scream 3 to follow the original trilogy and its expanding sequel commentary.
  • Watch Scream 4 before the legacy-sequel era begins.
  • Use the year on the title card or streaming listing to distinguish Scream (1996) from Scream (2022).
  • Finish with Scream VI and Scream 7 to follow the newer generation and Sidney’s later story.

Can you skip any of them?

You can watch the first film as a standalone introduction, but skipping entries is not ideal for a full franchise marathon. Skipping Scream 3 or Scream 4, in particular, removes continuity and character context that later films reference. A shorter route is therefore best understood as an introduction, not a complete viewing order: watch Scream (1996), then continue with the remaining films when possible.

Where to watch the Scream movies

U.S. streaming: As of the research date, Paramount+ lists all seven released Scream movies in the United States, including Scream 7. Streaming catalogs can change, and availability may differ outside the U.S., so check the current service listing before beginning a marathon.

For readers who want one current subscription destination, watch all seven Scream movies on Paramount+, subject to the service’s current catalog and regional availability. Subscription pricing, terms, and any referral availability should be verified at publication.

Digital rental or purchase: Prime Video’s official entertainment information previously documented rental or purchase access for the first six films, as well as access through a Paramount+ subscription on Prime Video. That information predates the release of Scream 7, so check the current Prime Video listing for that film rather than assuming it is included.

Readers who prefer to rent or own individual titles can look for options to rent Scream on Prime Video or buy the Scream movies digitally. The exact price, format, and availability can vary by country and can change over time.

How to own the movies on disc

Paramount’s movie pages provide physical-media and digital-release information for franchise titles. For the newest installment, readers can look for the Scream 7 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, while remembering that 4K UHD, standard Blu-ray, and DVD are different formats and may not contain identical disc packages or bonus features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multi-film sets require particular care. A listing described as a Scream movie collection on Blu-ray or 4K UHD may contain only selected films rather than all seven. Before buying, check the individual listing for:

  • the exact films included;
  • whether the discs are 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, or a combination;
  • the region or country compatibility;
  • whether digital copies are included and whether they have an expiration or redemption restriction;
  • the seller, edition, and release date.

Do not assume that a franchise box set contains every released movie simply because it uses the Scream name.

How spoiler-sensitive viewers should approach the series

Ghostface’s identity is a central mystery in every installment, and a film may involve more than one person using the Ghostface persona. For the cleanest experience, avoid searches such as “Scream killer,” “Ghostface identity,” or detailed character rankings until you have finished the relevant movie.

The summaries in this guide intentionally stop short of naming killers or explaining the reveals. Even cast lists, thumbnails, search suggestions, and fan rankings can expose major twists, so viewers who want to remain spoiler-free should begin with the 1996 film and avoid browsing discussions between entries.

Content warning and ratings

The films are rated R in the cited Paramount+ listings. They contain strong slasher violence, horror imagery, language, and mature themes. Parents and viewers who are sensitive to graphic violence should check the current rating and content details in their region before watching.
