The biggest confirmed update in Murdoch Mysteries Season 18 is the arrival of Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Inspector Albert Choi, the new head of Station House No. 4. His promotion changes the station-house chain of command without replacing William Murdoch or the established central cast. The completed season also delivered 22 episodes, the series’ 300th-episode milestone, an early Murdoch-and-Julia separation, and some of the show’s most unusual mysteries.
Season 18 premiered in Canada on October 7, 2024, concluded on April 14, 2025, and is now a completed season. The official series site identifies Murdoch Mysteries as being in Season 19 as of August 2026.
The major Season 18 update: a new inspector joins Station House No. 4
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee joined the cast of Murdoch Mysteries in Season 18 as Inspector Albert Choi. Choi becomes the new head of Station House No. 4, creating a fresh leadership dynamic for Murdoch, Crabtree, Watts, and the rest of the team.
That distinction matters: Lee’s arrival is an addition to the ensemble, not a replacement for Yannick Bisson, Jonny Harris, or another established lead. The season keeps the familiar station-house team at the center while giving the detectives a new authority figure to work with—and sometimes work around.

Lee is widely associated with other major television roles, but Season 18 uses him specifically as Inspector Choi, a character whose position affects how the station operates. The result is a meaningful cast-and-series milestone rather than an unverified suggestion that the show is preparing to remove one of its original stars.
What happens to Murdoch and Julia at the beginning?
Season 18 begins with a notable change in the Murdochs’ circumstances. In Only Murdoch in the Building, Julia and Susannah are in London while William Murdoch settles into a rooming house. He investigates a suspected murder involving a new neighbor, putting him in a more isolated living situation than viewers may expect.
This is an early-season separation in the story, not evidence that Hélène Joy has permanently left the series. Joy continues to be credited in the Season 18 episode listings, so the premise should be understood as a temporary change in the characters’ situations rather than a confirmed departure.
Season 18 is a 22-episode season—and includes a major franchise milestone
Season 18 contains 22 one-hour episodes. CBC’s Canadian schedule ran from October 7, 2024, through April 14, 2025, while Acorn TV’s season listing includes the full run through the finale, We Take Care of Our Own.

The season also contains the show’s 300th-episode milestone. Because episode-counting conventions can differ depending on how holiday specials and other special installments are handled, it is safer to describe this as the series’ 300th-episode milestone rather than assign it a particular Season 18 episode number without explaining a counting method.
For a long-running detective drama, the milestone is significant on its own. Season 18 is not simply another set of cases: it is part of the show’s transition into one of television’s unusually durable scripted mysteries.
The cases range from historical reenactments to mechanical men
The season’s episode premises show how broadly Murdoch Mysteries continues to mix period detail, crime-solving, comedy, invention, and the occasional piece of outright fantasy. These are the official fictional episode setups, not claims that the unusual events occurred in real history.
- The New Recruit: Murdoch and Crabtree investigate a fatality during a Queenston Heights battle reenactment, while Watts is placed in charge of the station house.
- Only Murdoch in the Building: Murdoch moves into a rooming house during Julia’s time in London and investigates an apparent murder.
- What the Dickens?!: A murder at a Charles Dickens gathering supplies the season with a literary-history setting.
- Gimme Shelter: Industrial conflict and a worker’s death unfold amid a strike.
- A Starlet Is Born: Murdoch becomes involved in a case concerning a silent-film star.
- The Murdoch Link: The advertised mystery centers on the purported “Missing Link” skull.
- The Death of James Pendrick: The apparent death of recurring inventor James Pendrick creates a major serialized turn.
- The Incredible Astonishing Adventures of Constable George Crabtree: A jailbreak, a bank blast, an empty vault, and a report of a mechanical man with a cannon arm produce one of the season’s most fantastical cases.
- We Take Care of Our Own: The finale investigates the murder of former Constable Tucker, while pressure builds to obtain a confession from Tony Petrucci and Currant is attacked.
That range is part of the season’s appeal. One episode can use a historical gathering or labor dispute as its foundation, while another can move toward silent cinema, speculative anthropology, elaborate machinery, or a pulpy invention mystery. The individual cases remain self-contained enough for a procedural audience, but the changes at the station house and the larger character developments give the season continuity.

How Inspector Choi changes the ensemble
Before Season 18, the station-house structure was already familiar to viewers: Murdoch approaches cases through forensic and technological ingenuity, Crabtree brings his distinctive enthusiasm and investigative instincts, Watts has become an increasingly important presence, and the wider team contributes its own expertise.
Inspector Choi adds a new layer above that working group. His role can influence assignments, discipline, station-house priorities, and the balance between established habits and new authority. The show therefore gets a character who can challenge the team without requiring the series to discard the relationships that made the station-house ensemble recognizable.
Watts’ temporary responsibility in The New Recruit also makes the season’s leadership theme especially visible. The story is not only about who solves a murder; it also asks who is trusted to manage the station when its usual arrangements change.
Is Season 18 the latest season?
No. Season 18 is complete and should be viewed retrospectively. As of August 11, 2026, the official Murdoch Mysteries site identifies the program as being in its 19th season.

That timing is important for readers encountering older headlines describing Season 18 as a new or upcoming development. The Paul Sun-Hyung Lee casting update was a major Season 18 change, but it is no longer a current-season announcement.

Availability depends on the viewer’s country and can change. In the United States, Acorn TV lists Season 18, and current availability information also identifies options including the Acorn TV Amazon Channel, YouTube TV, Spectrum On Demand, and digital purchase storefronts. A platform’s catalog, pricing, subscription requirements, and episode availability should be checked at the time of viewing.
U.S. viewers should also pay attention to rating labels. Acorn TV lists the season as TV-PG, while individual episode pages may display TV-14 for particular installments. One episode-level rating should not automatically be treated as the rating for the entire season.
For viewers who prefer physical media, the Murdoch Mysteries: Season 18 DVD is the most direct way to own the exact completed season discussed here. Retail listings identify it as a 2025 Acorn release in a six-disc DVD box set. Check the retailer’s current region compatibility, stock status, and pricing before ordering.

For readers who want more Murdoch stories
Maureen Jennings’ Detective Murdoch novels are a related recommendation for viewers who want to explore the character beyond television. The books are source material and broader franchise reading, not novelizations of individual Season 18 episodes. Except the Dying, for example, is a Detective Murdoch novel and should be presented as a separate reading experience rather than as a direct Season 18 tie-in.
