Stremio is a cross-platform media app and catalogue layer, not a library that automatically includes every film or series. The app organizes metadata and can display streams, subtitles and other information supplied by add-ons. What you can watch therefore depends on the add-ons and sources you choose, as well as your device, region, rights and the availability of a particular source.
The frequently shared Reddit guide titled “Stremio: All you need to know” is a community post in r/StremioAddons, not an official r/Stremio announcement. It is useful as a map of questions newcomers ask, but its recommendations about third-party add-ons, debrid services, VPNs, prices and performance should be treated as community guidance rather than current Stremio product guarantees.
What Stremio actually is
Stremio describes itself as a metadata catalogue and platform for streaming official content available to the public. In practical terms, it is the application and catalogue layer that brings together titles, descriptions, artwork, search results, subtitles and playable sources.
Add-ons provide much of that information. Depending on the add-on, they can supply:

The most important distinction is this: Stremio is the app and catalogue layer; what is available to watch depends on the add-ons and sources you choose. Stremio itself does not guarantee that a particular movie will be available, that a source will work, or that playback will have a particular resolution, speed, language or subtitle.
How add-ons work
Add-ons are fundamental to the Stremio experience. Stremio distinguishes between official add-ons, which are made and maintained by Stremio, and community add-ons, which are made and operated by other people or organizations.
That difference affects both reliability and support. Stremio can support its own application and official add-ons, but it does not control community add-ons and cannot guarantee that they will remain available or function correctly. If a community add-on stops returning results, produces an error or changes its behavior, the relevant issue is with that add-on and its operator rather than necessarily with the Stremio app.
A useful troubleshooting question is therefore: Is the problem with Stremio, or with the add-on supplying the result? Test an official catalogue or add-on where appropriate, check whether the issue affects one title or everything, and look for information from the community add-on’s own maintainer. Stremio directs community-add-on issues to the dedicated community rather than accepting responsibility for third-party services.

What the Reddit guide is—and is not
The post matching this article’s title is a community guide in r/StremioAddons. It is written as a hub for recurring newcomer questions, which explains why it discusses installation, add-ons, playback, debrid services, VPNs and device use in one place.
It should not be read as an official Stremio manual. In particular, its references to named third-party add-ons, debrid providers, prices, caching, country comparisons, account practices or performance can become outdated and were not independently verified for this article. They are not promises from Stremio.
It is also important not to treat a third-party configuration as a guarantee of legality, anonymity, safety or uninterrupted access. A community add-on may have its own operator, sources and terms. Stremio’s terms place responsibility for community-add-on content and its legality with the relevant developers, and Stremio may restrict an add-on it has reason to believe infringes intellectual-property rights.

Is Stremio legal?
The Stremio application is not a blanket license to access any content that appears through an add-on. The legal position can differ between the app, an add-on, a source, the content being accessed and the country in which you are using the service.

Stremio also does not itself “unlock” paid services, include every commercial streaming subscription or guarantee access to a particular title. If a source belongs to another provider, that provider’s licensing, account rules and terms still matter.
Supported platforms and downloads
Stremio’s official downloads page is the current source of truth for supported platforms, installation routes and the latest available app versions. It lists routes for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips, Hisense, browser use and other device classes.
That broad list does not mean every platform has identical features. Availability, installation method and playback behavior can vary by operating system, device model, region and distribution rules. The downloads page also labels some routes as limited, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old tutorial.

A sensible installation process
- Start at the official Stremio downloads page or the applicable verified device store.
- Choose a native app when one is available. A native TV, desktop or mobile app is generally preferable to treating every platform as interchangeable.
- Check the device and region before troubleshooting. A store listing, supported model and app feature set can change independently of the Stremio account or catalogue.
- Add only sources you understand and are authorized to use. Add-ons are not automatically official because they appear in a guide or are discussed online.
- Keep the app, operating system and store installation current. Updates can affect compatibility, playback and security.
Using Stremio in a browser
Stremio Web is useful when installing a native app is inconvenient, but a browser-only session is not feature-equivalent to the desktop application. Used alone, Stremio Web lacks some functions, including browser video conversion and torrent downloading.
On a supported desktop computer, Stremio Service or a running desktop app can act as a local companion for functionality that the browser cannot provide by itself. This does not turn an unsupported mobile or television platform into a fully equivalent desktop system, and it is not a universal fix for every playback problem.

If a browser session does not behave as expected, establish which setup you are using:
- Web alone: expect the browser-specific limitations.
- Web with Stremio Service: confirm that the service is installed, running and available on the same supported desktop device.
- Native desktop app: compare the result with the browser to determine whether the issue is web-specific.
Stremio on iPhone and iPad
The iPhone and iPad App Store product is called Stremio Lite. It should not be presented as feature-equivalent to the desktop or Android experience.

The official downloads page marks the iOS route as limited and also lists a separate regional full-version route through AltStore PAL for Europe, Brazil and Japan. Availability and regional distribution can change, so check the current official listing rather than assuming that an App Store installation has the same capabilities as another Stremio app.
Privacy: what Stremio says and what it does not mean
Stremio’s privacy policy says that it does not collect history or logs of the add-ons or sources used for streaming. It also says that Guest mode collects no personal data.
That does not justify describing Stremio as fully private or anonymous. Registered use has different data handling. The policy describes account credentials and automatically collected technical information such as an IP address, operating system, device identifiers and usage timing.
A careful summary is: Stremio says it does not collect streaming-source history, and says Guest mode collects no personal data. Review the current privacy policy before deciding between Guest and account use, because registered use has different account and technical-data handling.

Do not infer that Stremio’s policy governs every service that appears inside the application.

Choosing a device for the living room
For a non-smart television or a second-room setup, an Amazon Fire TV Stick can be a relevant viewing device because Stremio provides official Fire TV installation guidance. Before buying, confirm the exact Fire TV model, operating system, country or region and current Amazon Appstore availability for Stremio.
Do not assume that every Fire TV unit supports the same installation route or features. Device generations and store policies change. The safest approach is to verify compatibility from Stremio’s current downloads or support pages and the current device-store listing before purchase. A streaming stick also does not change the legal status or reliability of the sources supplied by an add-on.

- Are you authorized to access the source and content in your location?
- Have you checked the add-on’s own support channel before treating its failure as a Stremio failure?
- Have you read the current privacy policy if deciding between Guest mode and a registered account?
- For a TV purchase, have you verified the exact model, region and current store availability?
Bottom line
Stremio is a flexible cross-platform media app whose add-ons supply much of the discovery and playback experience. That flexibility is useful, but it also means platform features, stream availability and support depend on the app version, device, region and add-ons chosen. Start with official downloads and official add-ons, treat community-addon advice as third-party guidance, and use only sources you are authorized to access.
