For viewers deciding whether to watch, expect a bleak, graphic foster-home horror story with occult themes rather than a lightweight jump-scare film. It is intended for adults comfortable with strong bloody violence, disturbing imagery, grief-related material, and unsettling supernatural content.

What kind of horror film is it?
The film places family trauma, foster care, bereavement, and ritualistic supernatural horror inside a domestic setting. That makes the tension more intimate than in a monster movie or a conventional haunted-house release: the danger is embedded in a home that should be a place of safety.

“Domestic and occult horror” is the most useful shorthand. It also explains why the film may appeal to viewers who want emotionally severe horror with strong performances, and may not suit viewers looking for a casual, teen-friendly scare.
Cast and filmmakers
Sally Hawkins leads the cast as Laura, the foster mother at the centre of the story. Billy Barratt plays Andy and Sora Wong plays Piper, the siblings whose arrival sets the plot in motion; Jonah Wren Phillips plays Oliver. The supporting cast includes Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, and Mischa Heywood.
The Philippou brothers followed their earlier feature Talk to Me with Bring Her Back, but this is an original, standalone film—not a sequel. Danny Philippou co-wrote the screenplay with Bill Hinzman. Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton produced.

Its Australian production roots matter to its identity. The filmmakers returned to South Australia for the production, which had South Australian Film Corporation support. Key craft credits include cinematographer Aaron McLisky, ACS; production designer Vanessa Cerne; editor Geoff Lamb; costume designer Anna Cahill; sound designer Emma Bortignon; and composer Cornel Wilczek.

Content guidance
The U.S. R rating is a reliable signal that this is not family viewing. UK classification guidance additionally identifies strong bloody violence, injury detail, threat, disturbing ritualistic and supernatural material, and themes of bereavement. If you are sensitive to graphic violence, distressing child-endangerment-adjacent horror, or loss-related themes, read a detailed content guide before watching; those guides necessarily contain spoilers.
Where and how to watch
Release and streaming rights vary by country. In the United States, the film opened theatrically on May 30, 2025 and reached video platforms on July 1, 2025. As accessed on August 10, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed U.S. access through HBO Max subscription and Fandango rental or purchase. Treat that as a snapshot rather than a permanent availability promise, and check the service in your territory before subscribing or renting.

Runtime can also differ by edition. A24’s U.S. Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray listings give the film a 104-minute runtime. The UK classification record distinguishes a 104m 14s cinema version from a 100m 01s home-entertainment/VOD-streaming version. That is an edition and territory difference, not necessarily missing footage from a particular service.
Best option for physical-media collectors
The clearest search term is Bring Her Back Blu-ray. A24 offers special-edition standard Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray releases. Both include director commentary, one deleted scene, the Coming Full Circle: Making Bring Her Back featurette, and six behind-the-scenes postcards.

- 4K UHD Blu-ray: 2160p UHD presentation; requires a compatible 4K UHD player. HDR also requires compatible 4K playback hardware.
- Audio and subtitles: both editions list English Dolby Atmos, English SDH, and Spanish subtitles.
Do not buy the 4K disc for a standard Blu-ray player: it will not play there. Collectors interested primarily in the music can also seek the official one-LP soundtrack, featuring Cornel Wilczek’s score and selected songs on blood-red vinyl.
Reception and box office
As accessed on August 10, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed an 89% Tomatometer from 272 reviews and a 79% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 verified ratings. Those aggregates indicate a strongly positive critical sample, with particular attention paid to Hawkins’ performance and the directors’ horror craft; they are not a permanent score or a universal verdict.

Another published figure, Screen Australia’s 2024–25 annual-report listing, gives $43,116,185 in global box office as of August 7, 2025. The figures should not be combined: they may reflect different reporting dates, currencies, or methods.

Watch Bring Her Back if you want a serious, performance-led horror film that uses foster-family vulnerability and occult dread for sustained unease. Skip it, or save it for a time when you are comfortable with intense material, if graphic violence and distressing imagery are a hard limit. It stands on its own, so no prior knowledge of Talk to Me is required.
