The company shut down the feature across its platforms in July 2024, saying that removing existing user-generated content would help create a safer, more respectful community and reduce harmful or misleading material. Star ratings remained available.
The timing led many fans to connect the decision to hostile, reportedly homophobic comments and review-bombing aimed at the boys-love anime Twilight Out of Focus. That connection is plausible, but it has never been confirmed by Crunchyroll. As of August 10, 2026, Crunchyroll’s official U.S. help page still says comments are being removed or disabled, gives no return date, and does not identify a specific show or incident as the trigger.
What happened to Crunchyroll’s comments?
On or around July 8, 2024, users discovered that written comments had disappeared from Crunchyroll’s anime episode pages and Crunchyroll News articles. Contemporary reports described the change as affecting both the website and app rather than one device, account, series, or regional interface. Existing comments were no longer publicly visible, and the contemporaneous announcement was also reported to include written reviews.
This was the end of a feature Crunchyroll had presented as part of its community experience. In 2021, the company announced international support for mobile commenting and avatars, describing comments as a way for viewers to discuss anime episodes through the service. Crunchyroll’s 2021 announcement makes clear that episode commenting was an established product feature, not merely a short-lived desktop experiment.

The removal did not mean that every form of interaction vanished. Watching anime, using an account, and submitting a star rating remained separate functions. Crunchyroll’s current help page says that star ratings remain available even while existing user-generated content, including comments, is removed. Read Crunchyroll’s current explanation.
Crunchyroll’s official explanation
Crunchyroll’s confirmed explanation is a broad product and moderation policy, not a detailed incident report. The current help page says the company is removing existing user-generated content, including comments, across its platforms and experiences in order to support a safer and more respectful environment. It specifically says that star ratings remain.
Contemporaneous reporting quoted an earlier help-center explanation that said Crunchyroll was “hiding” existing user-generated content, including comments and reviews. That earlier wording reportedly referred to reducing harmful content and misinformation and encouraged fans to use Crunchyroll’s social channels to connect. Those additional details come from 2024 support wording reported by outlets including Anime Corner and The Mary Sue; they should be distinguished from the shorter wording on the current official page.
In practical terms, Crunchyroll’s stated position was that the disadvantages of an open, large-scale comment system outweighed its community value. The company did not publish a detailed account of individual moderation failures, a catalog-wide audit, or a claim that one anime caused the shutdown.
Were the comments deleted everywhere?
The available reporting indicates that the change was broad:
- Comments attached to anime episode pages disappeared.
- Comments on Crunchyroll News articles were also affected.
- The change was reported on both the website and mobile app experiences.
- Existing written comments were removed from public view.
- Contemporaneous reports said written reviews were also hidden or removed.
- Star ratings remained available.
That last distinction matters. A star rating is not the same product as a written review or an episode discussion. Users can still express an opinion numerically, but they cannot use the rating field to preserve an explanation, recommendation, spoiler warning, adaptation observation, or conversation with other viewers.
The change should also not be confused with comments on Crunchyroll’s social-media accounts. The presence of discussion on an external social channel does not mean that the in-context episode-comment system has returned.
Did Crunchyroll delete the comments or merely hide them?
The public result is clear, but the technical status of the underlying archive is not.

The earlier help-center wording reported in July 2024 said Crunchyroll was “hiding” existing user-generated content. News headlines often called the event a deletion because users could no longer see or use their comments. The current official help page now says Crunchyroll is “removing” existing user-generated content.
Those words are not necessarily interchangeable. “Removed” describes the user-facing result; it does not establish whether the data was permanently destroyed, retained internally, placed in an archive, or could be restored. Crunchyroll has not publicly explained whether the old comments still exist in its systems, whether users can retrieve their own writing, or whether a restoration plan exists.
The most accurate description is therefore: Crunchyroll removed the comments from public view, while its earlier wording called them hidden and its current wording calls them removed. Claims that the entire archive was permanently erased go beyond the public evidence.
Why did fans connect the shutdown to Twilight Out of Focus?
The leading theory comes from timing.
- Twilight Out of Focus, a boys-love anime, premiered in Japan on July 4, 2024 and was simulcast by Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll’s release coverage is available in its premiere announcement and July 8 feature.
- Viewers posted screenshots and commentary alleging that the series was being review-bombed by accounts with few previous reviews. Anime commentator Geoff Thew publicized examples on July 6, according to the chronology reported by The Mary Sue.
- By approximately July 8, comments and written reviews had disappeared throughout Crunchyroll.
- Fans and entertainment outlets therefore wondered whether the reported hostile and homophobic reactions had prompted the platform-wide action.
The chronology is striking, but chronology is not proof of causation. When Anime News Network asked whether the shutdown was connected to the comments about Twilight Out of Focus, Crunchyroll declined to comment, according to ComicBook.com’s report.

It is fair to say that the review-bombing reports were the leading suspected trigger. It is not fair to say that Crunchyroll admitted the anime was the reason.
Was Senpai is an Otokonoko part of the controversy?
Some secondary coverage also mentioned Senpai is an Otokonoko, another Summer 2024 anime involving gender presentation and romance, in reports about hostile commentary or review-bombing during the same period. Crunchyroll had announced the series and carried it as part of its catalog; its official announcement is available here.
However, Crunchyroll did not identify Senpai is an Otokonoko as the cause of the shutdown either. Reports naming it provide context for the atmosphere surrounding the decision, not confirmation of an internal corporate trigger. Niche Gamer’s coverage is one example of the reporting that connected both titles to the surrounding discussion.
Were subtitle complaints involved?
Some July 2024 coverage also mentioned criticism of the translations for My Deer Friend Nokotan. Certain users alleged that its subtitles were AI-generated. Those were user allegations, not an established technical finding, and neither Crunchyroll nor a verified investigation tied the translation controversy to the comment shutdown.

The two issues should not be merged. A careful summary is: translation criticism was another contemporaneous topic discussed in coverage, but there is no confirmed evidence that it caused or materially influenced the removal of Crunchyroll’s comments.
What exactly did Crunchyroll want to prevent?
The company’s stated goal was to create a safer and more respectful community. The contemporaneous support wording additionally referred to harmful content and misinformation. That category can include obvious abuse, spam, harassment, and deceptive material, but it may also cover difficult-to-moderate combinations of spoilers, trolling, personal attacks, brigading, and bad-faith reviews.
It is important not to turn the stated goal into a claim that every removed comment was harmful or false. A platform-wide shutdown necessarily removes benign discussion along with abusive material. Nor did removing written comments eliminate every possible form of manipulation: star ratings can still be brigaded, and a single numerical score provides less context for evaluating whether a low rating reflects genuine dislike, prejudice, or coordinated review-bombing.
Why did fans care so much about an apparently small feature?
For many viewers, Crunchyroll’s comments were not just an optional message box. They created a social layer directly beneath the episode being watched. Users described the feature as a place to:
- Share immediate post-episode reactions while other fans were watching the same release.
- Compare interpretations and discuss changes from the source manga or light novel.
- Find recommendations and context without leaving the streaming service.
- Post spoiler warnings or point out details that another viewer might have missed.
- Judge whether a series had an active audience.
- Participate in a community experience that conventional streaming interfaces often do not provide.
These are qualitative accounts from user reactions and media coverage, not the result of a representative survey of all Crunchyroll subscribers. Some users welcomed the removal because they found the comments toxic, repetitive, or poorly moderated. Others viewed the feature as one of Crunchyroll’s remaining links to its older social identity, especially after other community functions had disappeared.
That explains the intensity of the backlash. The company removed not only abusive speech but also the context-specific conversation that made the service feel less like a video library and more like a shared anime-watching space.
Why did Crunchyroll remove everything instead of moderating individual users?
Crunchyroll has not published its internal cost-benefit analysis, so the following is an evaluation of the trade-off rather than a statement of company policy.
| Targeted moderation could have preserved | A platform-wide shutdown eliminated |
|---|---|
| Episode-specific fan discussion | Hate speech and harassment hosted on the service |
| Reviews, recommendations, and adaptation commentary | Spam, trolling, and spoiler-heavy threads |
| A distinctive social feature | The need to moderate comments across a large catalog |
| Conversation around new releases | The risk of harmful material remaining visible beside content for broad audiences |
Critics argued that Crunchyroll chose the “nuclear option” rather than investing in better moderation tools, staffing, reporting systems, or community rules. That criticism is understandable, but it remains analysis from observers—not proof that the company made the decision for a particular financial or operational reason.

From Crunchyroll’s perspective, eliminating the comment surface offers a predictable moderation outcome: no in-service comment can become a visible harassment problem if the feature no longer exists. The cost is that all users lose the feature, including those who used it constructively.

What happened to the rating for Twilight Out of Focus?
A contemporaneous Escapist report recorded Twilight Out of Focus at approximately 4.1 out of 5, with 7,677 reviews and about 22% one-star ratings at the time of that article. Supporters of the review-bombing theory cited the concentration of one-star reviews as evidence.
Those figures are a historical snapshot from a secondary source, not a current Crunchyroll statistic. The original review data is no longer publicly inspectable in the same form after the removal, so the numbers should not be presented as the show’s current rating or as definitive proof of coordinated manipulation.
Similarly, individual Reddit users told Dexerto that episodes commonly had hundreds of comments and that hateful material could appear deeper in threads. Those accounts help illustrate user experience, but they are anecdotal and should not be treated as a platform-wide average.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre Crunchyroll comments coming back?
There is no announced return date. As of August 10, 2026, Crunchyroll’s official U.S. help article remains active and still describes the removal or disabling of comments. It does not provide a restoration schedule, promise a redesigned comment system, or identify a specific event that would cause the feature to return.
That does not prove that comments can never return. It means only that no public restoration plan is documented in the current official information. Likewise, the help page’s change from “hiding” in the historical wording to “removing” in the current wording does not by itself establish whether the old archive was permanently destroyed.

Where can anime fans discuss episodes now?
No alternative completely reproduces Crunchyroll’s old experience because the defining feature was its placement directly beneath the episode. Still, viewers have several options:
- Crunchyroll star ratings: These remain the official in-platform way to express a numerical opinion, although they do not replace written reviews or conversation.
- MyAnimeList: Its current official app listing describes reviews, recommendations, social features, group chats, friends’ scores, and related community tools. See the official app listing.
- AniList: Its forums and reviews provide discussion outside the streaming page. Its moderation rules address review quality, plagiarism, spoilers, and personal attacks.
- Reddit episode discussions: These can provide fast, episode-specific reactions, but spoiler policies, moderation quality, and community rules vary by subreddit.
Third-party communities restore some of the social function, but they also require viewers to navigate away from the episode and follow another site’s moderation and spoiler rules. That separation is precisely what many fans felt they lost in July 2024.
The bottom line on the Crunchyroll comments controversy
Crunchyroll has confirmed the policy rationale for removing comments: the company wanted a safer, more respectful community and wanted to reduce harmful or misleading user content. It retained star ratings but removed the written discussion layer from episodes and news content.
What Crunchyroll has not confirmed is equally important. It has not said that Twilight Out of Focus caused the shutdown, has not identified Senpai is an Otokonoko as a trigger, has not tied the decision to subtitle allegations, and has not announced when—or whether—the old comments will return.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Crunchyroll remove comments because of Twilight Out of Focus?
Not officially. The anime was reportedly targeted by hostile and possibly homophobic reviews shortly before comments disappeared across Crunchyroll, which made it the leading suspected trigger. Crunchyroll declined to confirm a connection when asked.
Are Crunchyroll’s old comments permanently deleted?
That is unknown. Earlier help wording reportedly said the content was being “hidden,” while the current help page says it is being “removed.” Crunchyroll has not publicly explained whether the underlying archive still exists or can be restored.
Can users still rate anime on Crunchyroll?
Yes. Crunchyroll’s current help page says star ratings remain available. Written comments and, according to contemporaneous reporting, written reviews are different features and are no longer publicly available.
Will Crunchyroll comments come back?
There is no announced return date or public restoration roadmap as of August 10, 2026. That does not establish that the feature can never return; it means Crunchyroll has not documented a plan to restore it.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Crunchyroll removed its comments across episodes and news content in July 2024 as part of a stated effort to create a safer, more respectful environment and reduce harmful or misleading material. The timing strongly suggests that reported review-bombing of Twilight Out of Focus may have contributed, but Crunchyroll never confirmed that—or any other single incident—as the cause. Star ratings remain, while the fate of the old written comments and reviews is unresolved and no return date has been announced.
