Dan Aykroyd, Bill Hader, Dana Carvey and Colin Quinn were among the most conspicuous former Saturday Night Live figures missing from the televised 50th-anniversary special. Their situations were not the same: Aykroyd later said he chose to watch the broadcast at home with his family, Hader explained that anxiety led him to decline, Carvey was kept away by a bad case of the flu, and Quinn appears to have had a conflicting comedy engagement—although that last explanation was never confirmed by Quinn or NBC.
The following is a guide to the most notable reported absences from SNL50: The Anniversary Special, which aired live from Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center on February 16, 2025. It is not a complete attendance register. Not being visible in the broadcast does not necessarily prove that someone was not somewhere in the building, particularly because overflow guests reportedly watched from neighboring Studio 8G.

Who was missing from the SNL 50th-anniversary special?
| Person | SNL connection | What is known | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dan Aykroyd | Original cast member, 1975–1979 | His representative initially cited prior commitments. Aykroyd later said he deliberately stayed home so he could watch the entire special with his family rather than spend the evening working backstage. | Confirmed later explanation |
| Bill Hader | Cast member, 2005–2013 | His representative initially described a longstanding scheduling conflict. Hader later said anxiety was the reason he declined involvement in the special. | Later direct explanation |
| Dana Carvey | Cast member, 1986–1993; frequent later guest | His representative said Carvey had a bad case of the flu and was too sick to travel. | Confirmed illness explanation |
| Colin Quinn | Cast member and Weekend Update anchor, 1998–2000 | His website listed a performance at Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh, North Carolina, on the night of the special. That makes a prior engagement the apparent explanation, but no direct confirmation was issued. | Probable, not confirmed |
The event was officially billed as a three-hour live special, while Peacock’s episode listing gives the program a 152-minute runtime. Peacock’s announced guest lineup included many former cast members, hosts and musical guests, but it did not amount to a publicly released list of every person invited or every person physically present.
Dan Aykroyd chose to watch SNL50 from home
Aykroyd’s absence stood out more than almost any other because he was one of the original SNL performers and the only living member of the original cast not seen at the televised celebration. Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman were present. Aykroyd had also publicly celebrated the anniversary on X, describing himself as a co-founder and encouraging fans to watch, without announcing that he would not attend. Early reporting therefore treated his absence as unexplained.

Before the broadcast, Aykroyd’s representative gave reporters the short explanation that he had “prior commitments.” That was the best available account at the time, but it was later superseded by Aykroyd’s own explanation.
In July 2025, Aykroyd told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted to watch the special from beginning to end at home with his family. His reasoning was practical and personal: attending the event would have placed him in a dressing room, preparing or working behind the scenes, rather than allowing him to experience the anniversary as a fan. The later account was summarized by The Daily Beast and reported by LateNighter.
There is no reliable evidence that Aykroyd was protesting the special, feuding with Lorne Michaels, dealing with a disclosed health problem or being snubbed. His absence is best understood as a deliberate choice to watch the broadcast at home. The special still acknowledged his legacy through archival material, including the famous “Jane, you ignorant slut” Weekend Update exchange. Peacock’s preview and the Associated Press recap provide context for those references.
Bill Hader declined because of anxiety, not simply scheduling
Hader was a major SNL performer from 2005 through 2013, appearing on the show for eight seasons and creating characters such as Stefon, the frequently exasperated New York guide. His absence was initially attributed to a longstanding scheduling conflict. Reports also said that he gave the show a polite decline.

In an early report, Hader’s representative cited the scheduling conflict. But in an August 2025 interview with Seth Meyers, Hader described a more personal reason for not participating: anxiety connected to the prospect of returning to the high-pressure environment of Saturday Night Live. The Los Angeles Times reported on his explanation.
Andy Samberg had considered Hader for a digital short about the anxiety experienced by performers on SNL. Hader said he was reluctant to take part because he was anxious; Bowen Yang ultimately performed the role in the televised short. That makes Hader’s absence unusually connected to the content of the special itself. The “Anxiety” piece became an on-air acknowledgment of the psychological pressure associated with the program, even though Hader did not appear in it. Peacock’s official recap covers the segment.
Hader’s explanation should be reported as his own account, not converted into a medical diagnosis. The public record does not establish that he was medically unable to attend, nor does it support saying that he was hospitalized or suffering from a specific condition. It does establish that anxiety influenced his decision to decline involvement.
Hader did appear in anniversary-related material outside the special itself. He reunited with Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen for a Volkswagen commercial reviving “The Californians.” Consequently, saying that he was nowhere in the broader SNL50 rollout would be inaccurate. E! reported on the commercial appearance.

Dana Carvey missed the event because of the flu
Carvey’s absence surprised viewers because he had been highly visible during Season 50. He had returned for sketches involving Joe Biden, the Church Lady, Elon Musk and Al Pacino, and he had frequently discussed the anniversary on the Fly on the Wall podcast with David Spade.
Carvey’s representative said that he had a bad case of the flu and was unable to travel to New York for the special. That explanation was reported by The Daily Beast and by LateNighter.
Nothing in the cited reporting indicates that Carvey rejected the reunion, was excluded from it or was hospitalized. The supported description is narrower: he was sick with a bad flu and could not travel. His podcast co-host Spade did attend and appeared in the “New York Musical” segment, making Carvey’s absence particularly noticeable but not mysterious.
Colin Quinn appears to have had a conflicting performance
Quinn was a cast member from 1998 through 2000 and served as a Weekend Update anchor. He was not seen in the televised special, but the evidence for why is less conclusive than it is for Aykroyd, Hader or Carvey.

Quinn’s website listed him for a performance at Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday, February 16, 2025—the same night as the anniversary broadcast. A listing for the venue also appears in Concert Archives, as noted by Us Weekly.
That engagement may have prevented Quinn from attending, and it is the apparent explanation. However, neither Quinn nor SNL publicly confirmed that the performance was the reason he missed the special. It would therefore be inaccurate to state that the engagement definitively caused his absence or that Quinn was not invited.
Quinn was not entirely forgotten by the broadcast. During the Weekend Update portion, Bill Murray mentioned him in a ranking of former anchors, even though Quinn did not appear in the segment. The Associated Press reported on the reference.
Dick Ebersol was absent, but he was not a cast member
Dick Ebersol belongs in any discussion of notable absences, but not in a list of missing cast members. He was an NBC executive closely associated with Lorne Michaels and the development of Saturday Night Live, and he served as executive producer during a significant period in the show’s history. Contemporary coverage attributed his absence to health issues.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe public record does not provide enough detail to identify those issues. The responsible wording is that Ebersol was reported absent because of health concerns; speculation about the nature or seriousness of his condition is not supported.
Other former cast members with no reliable public explanation
Later coverage identified several additional former cast members who were not prominently seen in the televised celebration:
- Robert Downey Jr.
- Joan Cusack
- Chris Redd
- Randy Quaid
- Mary Gross
Us Weekly included those names among other notable absences, but the available reporting does not establish a public reason for any of them. Downey and Cusack were both part of the unusually turbulent 1985–86 Season 11, while Redd, Quaid and Gross had different relationships with the show and different levels of prominence.
The careful conclusion is that these performers were not prominently seen in the televised celebration and that no reliable public explanation has been established. That does not prove that they were formally invited and declined, excluded by the show, absent from Rockefeller Center or involved in a dispute with Michaels.

The available reporting is not strong enough to treat his attendance status or any possible reason as definitively established. If he is included in an expanded list, he should be described only as reported absent, with no public explanation found.
Why the list of absences is difficult to make definitive
The phrase “cast members who weren’t at the 50th special” can mean several different things:
- Not on the announced guest list. Peacock published a lineup, but not a complete invitation list.
- Not visible in Studio 8H. The live broadcast showed only people who had an on-air role or appeared in the camera frame.
- Not in the building. This requires stronger evidence than simply watching the program and noticing that someone did not appear.
- Not involved in the anniversary promotion at all. A person could skip the special but appear in a commercial, interview or other related material.
Reports said that the event’s enormous guest list required some alumni, writers, hosts and associates to watch from neighboring Studio 8G rather than appear in Studio 8H. LateNighter’s reporting is important here: camera visibility is not the same as a verified building-wide attendance record.
That is also why the strongest version of this article names the most notable reported absences, rather than claiming to identify every former cast member who failed to appear. NBC and Peacock announced guests, but no complete public census of invitations and physical attendance has been released.

People who were present but not central to the televised sketches
Several viewers confused a small or nonexistent on-air role with an absence. The following people should not be described as having skipped the special:
- Chevy Chase attended, although he did not receive a major sketch role.
- Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman appeared and took part in a tribute involving Gilda Radner.
- David Spade appeared in the “New York Musical” segment, despite Carvey’s absence.
- Other alumni and associates may have watched from Studio 8G rather than appearing in Studio 8H.
These distinctions matter because the special had to accommodate an unusually large group of former cast members, writers, hosts, musical guests and celebrity associates. The Us Weekly attendance report and LateNighter’s overflow-room reporting help separate visible participation from physical attendance.

John Belushi and Gilda Radner did not “skip” SNL50
John Belushi and Gilda Radner were members of the original cast, but both had died long before the 50th anniversary. They belong in the story of the show’s history, not in a list of living performers who chose not to attend.
The special honored both through archival footage and references. Garrett Morris introduced a film featuring the original cast, and the broadcast used historical material to represent performers who could not be present. The Associated Press preview and Peacock’s recap document those tributes.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
There is no single scandal explaining the missing alumni. The public record instead shows four different categories:
- A deliberate personal choice: Aykroyd wanted to watch the event as a viewer.
- A direct personal explanation: Hader connected his decision to anxiety around returning to SNL.
- An illness: Carvey was reportedly too sick with the flu to travel.
- A plausible but unconfirmed conflict: Quinn had a performance listed for the same night.
For the secondary names, the evidence is much weaker. Lack of screen time cannot establish a snub, feud, rejected invitation or private absence. Likewise, the initial explanations for Aykroyd and Hader should not be presented as the final word without noting the later updates from the performers themselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Dan Aykroyd snubbed from the SNL 50th-anniversary special?
There is no reliable evidence that Aykroyd was snubbed or boycotted the event. His representative initially cited prior commitments, but Aykroyd later said he deliberately stayed home so he could watch the full broadcast with his family.
Why was Bill Hader not in SNL50?
Hader’s representative initially cited a longstanding scheduling conflict. Hader later said anxiety led him to decline involvement, including possible participation in an Andy Samberg digital short about the anxiety associated with performing on SNL.
Why was Dana Carvey absent from SNL50?
Carvey’s representative said he had a bad case of the flu and was unable to travel. The available reporting does not support claims that he was hospitalized or rejected the reunion.
Was Colin Quinn invited to the SNL 50th special?
There is no public confirmation of whether Quinn was invited. His website listed a Goodnights Comedy Club performance in Raleigh on February 16, 2025, which may have prevented him from attending, but that remains an apparent rather than confirmed explanation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Did every former SNL cast member attend the 50th special?
No. Several notable former cast members were not prominently seen, but there is no publicly available complete attendance or invitation register. Some people may also have been present in an overflow area without appearing in the televised sketches.
The Bottom Line
The missing SNL50 alumni did not share one common reason. Aykroyd made a conscious choice to watch from home, Hader later linked his decision to anxiety, Carvey was sick with the flu, and Quinn appears to have had a conflicting performance that was never officially confirmed as the cause. Other names—including Robert Downey Jr., Joan Cusack, Chris Redd, Randy Quaid and Mary Gross—were not prominently seen, but the public record does not establish why. The evidence supports careful distinctions, not a claim that the absent performers were snubbed.
