Jack Russell, the original lead singer and a founding figure associated with Great White, died at 63, his family announced on Thursday, August 15, 2024. The statement said Russell had passed peacefully surrounded by his wife, son, cousin and close friends.
His reported cause of death was Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy, according to memoir co-author K.L. Doty. Russell had disclosed those diagnoses and announced his retirement from touring less than a month earlier. Because later sources list August 7 as his date of death while the contemporaneous family statement was posted on August 15, the announcement date is the clearest publicly documented date.

What happened to Jack Russell?
Jack Patrick Russell died at age 63 after a career that included Great White’s biggest commercial successes, years of solo and touring work, serious health problems, and the lasting public burden of the 2003 Station nightclub fire.
Russell’s family posted the death announcement to his social-media account on August 15, 2024. The statement described him as a father, husband, cousin, uncle and friend, and said he had passed peacefully in the presence of his wife, Heather Ann Russell; his son, Matthew Hucko; his cousin, Naomi Breshears Barbor; and friends Billy and Cheryl Pawelcik. The family asked for privacy and said information about a public memorial would be released later. The announcement was reported by Blabbermouth.

There is an important date qualification. Most initial coverage treated August 15 as the date of death or used it without distinguishing between the death and the announcement. Some later biographies and a later Blabbermouth report list August 7, 2024. The Los Angeles Times reported that Doty declined to say when Russell died. The most careful wording is therefore: Russell’s death was announced on August 15, 2024; some later sources report that he died on August 7.
This is Jack Russell the rock singer—not Jack White of the White Stripes and not the dog breed.
What was Jack Russell’s cause of death?
Russell’s death was attributed by K.L. Doty, the co-author of his memoir, to complications associated with Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy. The cause was also reported in coverage from CBS News.
On July 17, 2024, Russell announced that he was retiring from touring after receiving the diagnoses. He said he could no longer perform at the level he wanted or believed his fans deserved. Contemporary reports described difficulties involving coordination, balance and speech.

Multiple system atrophy is also a progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects movement and the body’s automatic functions. The National Institute on Aging explains that Lewy body dementia cannot be confirmed by a single scan or routine medical test and is definitively established only through a brain autopsy.
That medical point is relevant to how Russell’s cause should be described. The public record supports reporting the diagnoses and Doty’s attribution, but no publicly accessible death certificate or autopsy has been presented as independent confirmation. It would be inaccurate to claim that an autopsy confirmed Russell’s condition or to substitute Parkinson’s disease for the diagnoses he publicly announced.

Who was Jack Russell?
Born December 5, 1960, in Montebello, California, Russell became known for his powerful, blues-influenced voice in the Los Angeles hard-rock band Great White.
Russell helped form the band’s predecessor, Dante Fox, with guitarist Mark Kendall in the late 1970s. That group evolved into Great White in the early 1980s. Sources differ on the precise year of the band’s formal formation and on how they describe Russell’s joining, so the Dante Fox-to-Great White evolution is more accurate than assigning a single uncontested founding date.

He left the group during periods of the 1990s and early 2000s, later returned, and ultimately departed amid health problems and a dispute over the use of the Great White name.
After that departure, he performed with a separate touring act called Jack Russell’s Great White. That group should not be confused with the Great White lineup that continued with other singers. The official Great White biography lists Brett Carlisle as the band’s vocalist.
Great White’s biggest hits and achievements
Russell’s musical legacy was established before the tragedy that later became inseparable from his name. Great White’s blend of hard rock, blues and arena-ready vocal melodies brought the band major success at the end of the 1980s.
| Recording | Achievement |
|---|---|
| Once Bitten… (1987) | Great White’s breakthrough-era album |
| …Twice Shy (1989) | No. 9 on the Billboard 200; approximately two million copies sold, according to Billboard obituary coverage |
| Once Bitten, Twice Shy | No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989 |
| The Angel Song | No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 |
| Rock Me | No. 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 |
“Once Bitten, Twice Shy” was Great White’s signature hit, but it was not written by Russell. The song was composed by Ian Hunter and recorded by Great White as a cover. The band received a 1990 Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance for the recording. Russell’s Grammy artist page lists one nomination and no wins. The chart figures and album information are summarized in Billboard’s obituary coverage.

Why is the 2003 Station nightclub fire part of his obituary?
On February 20, 2003, Russell was performing with the touring group billed as Jack Russell’s Great White at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island. During the performance, pyrotechnics ignited highly flammable acoustic foam near the stage. The fire spread rapidly through the crowded club, killing 100 people and injuring approximately 230 others. Great White guitarist Ty Longley was among those killed.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s technical investigation examined the speed of the fire’s spread, the building materials, the available exits and the lack of adequate fire protection. NIST’s findings and recommendations are also summarized in its report on the Rhode Island nightclub fire.
The band-name distinction matters. News reports frequently referred to the act simply as Great White, but the group onstage was the Jack Russell-led touring offshoot, not simply the original band performing under its ordinary lineup. The original Great White and Russell’s touring version had separate identities during this period.
Was Jack Russell criminally charged?
No. Russell was not criminally charged in connection with the Station nightclub fire, according to Rolling Stone’s obituary reporting. That does not remove the band’s connection to the event: the pyrotechnics were used during the performance, and Russell was onstage when the fire began. But it is important not to turn that association into an unsupported statement that Russell was convicted of causing the deaths.

The tour manager, Daniel Biechele, pleaded guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter and received a 15-year sentence. He served approximately two years. The owners of The Station, Jeffrey and Michael Derderian, were also prosecuted. Their cases ended in no-contest pleas; Michael Derderian served prison time, while Jeffrey Derderian received community service.
There were also civil claims and settlements involving the band and Russell. Rolling Stone reported a $1 million settlement involving Russell and Great White as part of a broader settlement structure. Civil settlements are separate from criminal charges and should not be presented as a criminal conviction of Russell.

The Station fire remained a painful and central part of Russell’s public story. In later interviews, he expressed guilt and regret about the deaths and injuries. Those statements reflected Russell’s own emotional response and sense of responsibility; they were not a court finding that he was criminally responsible.

His memoir, The True Tale of Mista Bone: A Rock & Roll Narrative, dealt extensively with his career, addiction, legal troubles and experience surrounding the fire. Written with K.L. Doty, the book was published by Gatekeeper Press in July 2024, shortly before Russell’s death. Publication details are available through Bookshop.org.
Russell’s final years in music
Russell remained professionally active despite longstanding health and personal difficulties. He continued performing with Jack Russell’s Great White until his July 2024 retirement announcement.
Among his last major recorded collaborations was Medusa, made with L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns and released in January 2024 in at least some documented markets. The album’s release information is listed by Avalon/Marquee.
After Russell’s death, members of his touring band continued under the name Once Bitten. That later project is a continuation of his touring band’s personnel and legacy, not a return of the original Great White lineup. Sleaze Roxx reported on the name and the timing of the announcement.
Jack Russell’s legacy
Russell’s career cannot be reduced to the Station fire, although the tragedy permanently shaped how his life was discussed. He was also the vocalist on a platinum-era hard-rock catalog, the singer behind Great White’s No. 5 hit “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” a Grammy-nominated performer, a longtime touring musician and a writer who attempted to document his own history.

The most complete account holds those facts together: Russell helped build Great White from Dante Fox, sang on the band’s defining records, later led a distinct group under the Jack Russell’s Great White name, faced serious illness near the end of his life, and remained publicly connected to one of the deadliest nightclub fires in U.S. history without having been criminally charged for it.
