Those times refer to the live FX broadcast, not the standard Hulu on-demand release. Local listings can occasionally be affected by regional scheduling or preemptions, so viewers recording the original broadcast should confirm the guide supplied by their television provider.
When did “Search and Recovery” become available on Hulu?
The scheduled U.S. Hulu release was 12 a.m. ET on Friday, March 27, 2026. In the other U.S. time zones, that corresponds to:
- 11 p.m. CT on Thursday, March 26
- 10 p.m. MT on Thursday, March 26
- 9 p.m. PT on Thursday, March 26
This timing is easy to confuse because the first three episodes were released as a special FX-and-Hulu simulcast. For the finale, the clearest distinction is FX at 9 p.m. ET for the linear broadcast and Hulu at midnight ET the following calendar day for on-demand streaming. The official FX episode listing displays the finale with a March 27 date, consistent with the post-midnight Eastern release.
If the episode does not appear immediately in the Hulu app, search for the complete title—Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette—rather than just “Love Story.” Refreshing the title page, closing and reopening the app, or searching again later can help when a release has not yet propagated to a particular device or account.

Where to watch the finale
Hulu: the simplest U.S. option
For viewers in the United States, Hulu’s official series page is the primary on-demand destination. Open the series page, select Season 1 and choose Episode 9, “Search and Recovery.” Hulu is the better choice for viewers who want to pause, start late, or rewatch the episode without arranging a live television package.
FX through cable, satellite or live television
The original broadcast was on FX. A cable or satellite subscriber can search the provider’s guide for FX and, after the broadcast, check the provider’s on-demand library. Access to FX generally depends on the provider and package.
Watching FX without cable
Cord-cutters who wanted to watch the live broadcast needed a live-TV streaming service carrying FX. Services identified in the finale’s release coverage included:
- Hulu + Live TV
- YouTube TV
- Sling TV
- Fubo
- DIRECTV Stream
Channel lineups, local availability, plan requirements, prices and introductory offers change. Check the current channel guide before subscribing; the release-schedule coverage provides the relevant provider list but should not be treated as a permanent pricing or availability guide. If the goal is simply to watch the completed season, regular Hulu is generally more direct than paying for a live-TV service solely for FX.
Disney+ outside the United States
Disney+ is the principal international home for the series in many territories. Disney’s Australian editorial listing, for example, gives March 27, 2026, as the finale’s Disney+ streaming date. The exact launch date and time depend on the country, so international viewers should search the title in their local Disney+ app rather than convert the U.S. Hulu release time.
In the United States, some Hulu programming can be accessed through a Disney+ bundle, but Disney distinguishes between select Hulu content available inside Disney+ and the broader Hulu catalog available in the Hulu app. The Disney+ help page explains that availability depends on the subscription and product configuration.
Can you watch the finale for free?
There is no universal free viewing option. At the time of the finale’s release, coverage reported a one-month Hulu promotion for new and some returning subscribers. However, Hulu’s subscriber terms make clear that free trials and promotional offers are conditional. Eligibility can depend on prior subscriptions, the billing method, the selected plan and the specific offer displayed at sign-up.
Some live-TV streaming services may also advertise introductory trials, but those offers are not guaranteed and may require cancellation before a billing date. Check the final price, trial length and renewal terms before entering payment information. The accurate answer is that some eligible viewers may qualify for a free trial or promotion—not that everyone can watch the finale for free.

What is the finale about? (Spoiler-light)
“Search and Recovery” covers the last stage of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s marriage, as the couple attempts to preserve their relationship while dealing with intense public scrutiny and personal strain. The episode also involves Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bessette, and the Kennedy family event that brings the characters toward their final flight.
The episode is heartbreaking because the audience knows it is dramatizing the final days of real people whose lives ended in a well-documented 1999 aviation disaster. FX’s title and synopsis point toward the tragedy without presenting the show as a documentary or claiming that every conversation occurred exactly as shown.

The plane crashes, killing all three people aboard. The latter half of the episode follows the search and recovery effort, the notification of the families, funeral planning and the grief experienced by Caroline Kennedy and Ann Messina Freeman. The finale concludes with the families scattering the trio’s ashes at sea, followed by a symbolic image of John and Carolyn together on a beach. TVLine’s finale recap provides a more detailed account of the aired episode.
These are the show’s dramatic choices and should be separated from the historical record. The episode compresses and interprets private events for television; the fact that the crash occurred and who died in it is independently documented.
What happened historically?
On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr. was piloting a plane carrying Carolyn Bessette and her sister, Lauren Bessette, toward Martha’s Vineyard. The aircraft crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near the island. The National Transportation Safety Board’s final report states that all three occupants received fatal injuries.
The NTSB determined the probable cause was the pilot’s failure to maintain control during a nighttime descent over water as a result of spatial disorientation. The report listed haze and the dark night as contributing factors and found no pre-impact mechanical malfunction. “Probable cause” is the language of an accident investigation; it should not be casually rewritten as a legal finding of blame. The NTSB’s accident docket contains the underlying investigative material.
How accurate is the FX series?
Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette is a dramatization inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s book Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. It was created by Connor Hines and stars Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette, Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr., Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy and Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
That source and format matter: the series presents an interpretation of the couple’s relationship, not a documentary transcript of their private lives. Viewers should treat the NTSB report as the authority for the crash investigation and the series as the authority only for what the show depicts.

There has also been public criticism of some portrayals. Daryl Hannah disputed her depiction in the series, while Jack Schlossberg criticized the dramatization as fictionalized and exploitative. Those objections do not change the documented aviation findings, but they are another reason to avoid describing the show as a definitive account of every person or event. Coverage of Hannah’s objection appeared in The New York Times, and Schlossberg’s criticism was reported by CBS.
Is this the series finale?
It is safest to call “Search and Recovery” the Season 1 finale or the finale of the first JFK Jr.–Carolyn Bessette installment. FX describes this project as a limited series and the first installment in a broader Love Story anthology. Therefore, the episode concludes this nine-episode story, but “series finale” could incorrectly suggest that the larger anthology concept has ended.

FX’s official listing gives the episode a runtime of 56 minutes and 24 seconds, usually rounded to approximately 56 minutes in television guides. A few third-party listings have shown a longer 75-minute figure, which appears more likely to refer to a scheduled programming slot or inconsistent metadata than to the program’s actual running time. The official FX listing is the better reference.
