Did Cheryl Hines File for Divorce From RFK Jr.? What the 2024 Exclusive-Source Report Actually Said

An anonymous source told People in October 2024 that Cheryl Hines was discussing filing for divorce from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The report did not confirm a filing. Later statements from Hines indicate the couple remained married, although a 2026 biography claims the relationship nearly ended.

Short answer: there is no verified public evidence that Cheryl Hines filed for divorce from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In October 2024, People reported that an anonymous source described as close to Hines said she was talking about filing and that Kennedy was asking her not to. That was a report about a possible plan, not confirmation of a divorce petition. Hines later said publicly that she and Kennedy remained married, trusted each other and had become closer, although a 2026 biography claims the marriage came close to breaking down privately.

What the October 2024 report actually claimed

The rumor began with an October 6–7, 2024 report from People, reproduced by AOL. The article cited a source described only as being close to Cheryl Hines.

According to that source, Hines was very angry and embarrassed by the controversy surrounding journalist Olivia Nuzzi and Kennedy. The source said Hines had been talking about filing for divorce and that Kennedy was asking her not to. The report also referred to Hines considering taking legal action, without explaining whether that meant a divorce filing, a separation agreement or simply consulting a lawyer.

The distinction is essential:

  • Reported: Hines was discussing the possibility of filing.
  • Not reported: that she had filed a petition.
  • Not identified: a court, filing date, attorney, docket number, legal-separation agreement or divorce judgment.

Hines’s representative declined to comment, while Kennedy’s representative did not immediately respond. The anonymous source’s identity and direct access to Hines were not independently established in the public report. Therefore, the claim should be attributed to the source—not presented as a statement Hines made herself.

Why the divorce rumor surfaced

The report followed the public disclosure of Nuzzi’s personal relationship with a former reporting subject. Nuzzi was then the Washington correspondent for New York magazine, and the reporting subject was identified as Kennedy, who had been a prominent figure in the 2024 presidential campaign.

On September 19–20, 2024, Nuzzi acknowledged that communications with a former subject had become personal. According to the Washington Post, Nuzzi said the relationship began in December 2023, after her November 2023 profile of Kennedy, and ended toward the end of August 2024. She described it as personal but said it was not physical.

Kennedy’s representative disputed the account. As reported by The Associated Press and the Washington Post, the representative said Kennedy had met Nuzzi only once, for an interview, and denied the reported relationship.

Because the two accounts conflict, it is not accurate to state as an established fact that Kennedy had a physical affair with Nuzzi. The most supportable descriptions are a reported personal relationship, an alleged digital relationship or a disputed relationship that Nuzzi said was not physical.

What happened to Nuzzi’s journalism

The controversy was also a professional conflict-of-interest story. New York magazine placed Nuzzi on leave, and she later parted ways with the magazine. The magazine subsequently said that an internal review and an outside law-firm investigation found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias in her published work.

That finding does not resolve the dispute over the personal relationship, but it is an important distinction: the magazine’s review concerned the accuracy and impartiality of Nuzzi’s journalism, not whether Hines had filed for divorce.

Timeline of Hines and Kennedy’s marriage

August 2, 2014: Hines and Kennedy marry

Cheryl Hines and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. married at the Kennedy compound on Cape Cod. They had been romantically involved since 2011 after being introduced through Larry David. Us Weekly and the Los Angeles Times reported on the wedding.

September 2024: The Nuzzi controversy becomes public

Nuzzi acknowledged the personal relationship, said it was not physical and was placed on leave by New York. Kennedy denied the reported relationship through a representative.

October 2024: Divorce speculation escalates

The anonymous-source People report said Hines was discussing filing and Kennedy was asking her not to. Other coverage claimed the couple had barely spoken after the allegations and had been seen together. Those accounts also relied substantially on unnamed sources and photographs rather than legal records. None established that Hines had filed.

October 19–20, 2024: Hines presents the marriage as ongoing

At a Groundlings event, Hines spoke to Us Weekly about the ingredients of a successful relationship, including connection and the ability to move through difficult moments together. She wore her wedding ring and did not announce a separation. That did not disprove the anonymous-source claim that she had discussed divorce, but it showed that she was publicly describing the relationship as intact. See the Us Weekly report.

December 4, 2024: A public appearance together

The Washington Post analyzed an Instagram video in which Hines promoted a product while Kennedy appeared in the background. The video was consistent with the couple continuing to function publicly as a married pair, but a social-media appearance cannot establish what was happening privately.

August 2025: Hines discusses trust and friendship

In a Wall Street Journal interview reported by Yahoo Entertainment, Hines said she and Kennedy talk about everything, are really good friends and trust each other. She did not address every rumor in detail, but her comments were inconsistent with the idea that a confirmed divorce had already taken place.

October 2025: Hines explains the proposed “pretend separation”

While promoting her memoir Unscripted, Hines said Kennedy had suggested that they publicly claim to be separated during his 2024 presidential campaign. She said the idea was well-intentioned because she was receiving criticism for being married to him, but she did not think pretending to separate would help. She also said they became closer.

That account is another point frequently confused in online coverage. A proposed public appearance of separation is not a legal separation and is not a divorce filing. Hines’s comments confirmed the suggestion, not that the couple actually separated under the law. The account was reported by TheWrap and CBS News.

April 2026: A biography offers a more troubled private account

Isabel Vincent’s biography, RFK Jr.: The Fall and Rise, was published by William Morrow on April 14, 2026. The publisher’s description says the book draws on interviews, Kennedy’s personal diaries and previously unreleased material.

Coverage of the book by The Daily Beast says Vincent’s sources described the period after the Nuzzi controversy as an exceptionally bad time and nearly the end of the marriage. The book reportedly claims Kennedy worked to repair the relationship partly because he believed another divorce could damage his political ambitions and prospects for a cabinet position.

Those are claims made by Vincent and attributed to her reporting, unnamed sources and diary material. They should not be rewritten as established facts about Kennedy’s motive. The same coverage reportedly understood the couple to be somewhat together but not always together, which describes a complicated private relationship—not a documented legal separation.

Separate coverage of the biography has also reported that Kennedy compared Hines unfavorably with his late former wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy. That is an attributed claim about private conversations and does not provide evidence that Hines filed for divorce. Kennedy’s earlier marriage to Mary Richardson ended amid divorce proceedings before her death in 2012, but that history does not establish that Hines’s marriage followed the same course. See Us Weekly’s coverage.

2026: Continued public association

The Getty Images archive includes photographs of Hines and Kennedy together at a January 31, 2026 gala and at the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Joint appearances are not proof of marital harmony or proof that a couple lives together, but they are consistent with the pair continuing to present themselves publicly as married.

Did Cheryl Hines ever confirm the divorce rumor?

No. Hines did not confirm that she was preparing divorce papers, had retained a divorce lawyer or had filed a petition. Her representative declined comment when People sought a response.

Her later public comments addressed the relationship rather than validating the original rumor. In 2024, she spoke about connection and getting through difficult periods. In 2025, she described herself and Kennedy as close, said she loved him and their family, and said they trusted each other. She also disclosed the proposal to pretend publicly that they were separated—while saying she rejected it.

These statements do not prove that the marriage was peaceful throughout the period. They do show why it is inaccurate to turn an anonymous report about a possible filing into a confirmed divorce story.

Is there evidence of an actual divorce filing?

No credible public filing or divorce judgment was located in the reporting reviewed for this article. No source in the available record identifies a petition, court docket, filing date or legal separation agreement involving Hines and Kennedy.

That wording describes the limits of the public record; it is not an omniscient claim that no document could exist in any jurisdiction or under restricted access. The responsible conclusion is that no verified filing has been publicly reported or documented in the available evidence.

Confirmed versus unconfirmed

Established or directly documented Reported but not independently verified
Hines and Kennedy married in 2014. Hines was actually preparing to file for divorce.
Nuzzi acknowledged a personal relationship, said it was not physical, and faced a professional conflict-of-interest review. Kennedy was begging Hines not to file, beyond the source’s attributed claim that he was asking her not to.
Kennedy’s representative denied the reported relationship and said Kennedy met Nuzzi only once. The relationship with Nuzzi was physical.
New York said its reviews found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias in Nuzzi’s published work. Hines sought legal advice, took concrete legal action or entered a legal separation.
Hines later described the marriage as ongoing, said she and Kennedy trusted each other, and confirmed that he suggested pretending to be separated publicly. Kennedy remained married primarily to protect his cabinet prospects.
A 2026 biography made claims that the marriage nearly ended after the scandal. The couple’s private living arrangements or current relationship quality.

The most accurate current status

The available evidence supports a nuanced answer rather than either extreme headline. Hines and Kennedy appear to have remained legally married and continued making public appearances together. Hines’s own 2025 comments support that conclusion.

At the same time, the 2026 biography presents a more difficult private account, claiming that the marriage nearly collapsed after the Nuzzi controversy and that the couple may not have been together continuously. Those claims add context but do not establish a court filing or prove that the marriage ended.

So the accurate formulation is: Cheryl Hines was reportedly discussing filing for divorce in October 2024, but no verified public evidence shows that she actually filed. Later public statements indicate that she and Kennedy remained married, while newer biographical reporting says the relationship was seriously strained and may have been more complicated privately than their public appearances suggested.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The October 2024 “exclusive source” story was about Cheryl Hines reportedly considering a divorce filing—not about a confirmed filing. No credible public record reviewed here shows that she filed or that the couple divorced. Hines later described the marriage as continuing, while a 2026 biography claims the relationship nearly broke down behind the scenes.
