The headline was accurate only with a few important qualifications. On March 23, 2016, Pornhub launched a VR category in partnership with BaDoinkVR. It offered free short previews, generally around five minutes long, rather than free access to BaDoinkVR’s complete paid library.
The announcement arrived when Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, and Oculus Rift were making virtual reality more accessible. It was an early experiment in putting 360-degree adult video in front of a mass audience—but the technology was less uniform than the word “VR” suggested.
What Pornhub actually launched
The 2016 channel was a collection of promotional VR videos produced with BaDoinkVR. Viewers could watch the previews without buying the partner service, while links and promotions directed them toward BaDoinkVR’s subscription catalog for full scenes.
That distinction matters. “Free VR porn” described the availability of the previews, not an unlimited free version of the commercial library. The launch was both a content release and a marketing funnel for a specialist VR service.

The videos used more than one format:

Which devices were supported?
The launch targeted several different levels of VR hardware:
- Google Cardboard: an inexpensive folding viewer that used a smartphone screen.
- Samsung Gear VR: a phone-based headset built around compatible Samsung devices.
- Oculus Rift: a dedicated PC-connected VR headset.
- Desktop and mobile browsers: users could view 360-degree footage without a headset and drag the perspective manually.
Pornhub also announced a giveaway of 10,000 branded Google Cardboard viewers. That was a launch promotion from 2016, not an offer that should be assumed to exist now.
Why the experience was not automatically “fully immersive”
VR video is a production format, not a guarantee of a particular experience. A headset can show a flat 2D video, a monoscopic panorama, or stereoscopic footage. Those formats look and feel different even when all are labeled VR.

Contemporary reviews found several limitations in the early material. Some footage was blurry, perspective could look distorted, and at least one review found that moving the head added little because the video covered only 180 degrees. A viewer turning toward the back of the virtual room might therefore see a blank area, an edge, or an unsuitable viewpoint rather than a continuous scene.

The camera position was fixed during filming. Head movement changed the direction of the view, but not the events being recorded.
How browser-based VR works today
Old articles about the launch may mention WebVR or promise a universal “VR Mode.” Those instructions are dated. WebVR was deprecated and succeeded by WebXR, the current browser API for immersive experiences.

A modern browser-based headset session depends on several conditions:
- The page must be delivered over HTTPS, apart from limited local-development exceptions.
- The browser and operating system must expose WebXR support.
- The relevant device must support an
immersive-vrsession. - The page’s player must be designed to use that capability.
- The user must grant permission to enter immersive mode.
Technically, a site can check whether the browser exposes navigator.xr. If that object is unavailable, the browser cannot start a native WebXR session from the page. Even when it is present, support for a particular headset, browser, video projection, or player is not guaranteed.

Common problems and what they mean

The access question is separate from the technology
The original announcement treated the channel as broadly accessible, but online availability is not universal. Pornhub has blocked access in some jurisdictions rather than adopt particular age-verification requirements, while other regions have introduced device-based or identity-based checks. In the United Kingdom, for example, access policies have changed as age-verification requirements evolved.
That means “free” needs a date and location attached to it. A preview may not require payment, but a user may still face regional restrictions, an age gate, device requirements, or a separate subscription for full-length partner content. Readers should also be adults where such material is legal, and should avoid bypassing local access rules.

The channel was significant less because it perfected VR video than because it made an emerging format visible to a huge mainstream audience. Pornography has often acted as an early commercial test for new distribution technologies, and this launch showed how 360-degree video could be delivered through familiar web platforms rather than specialist demonstrations alone.

It also exposed the gap between promotional language and technical reality. A headset did not automatically create depth, interaction, high resolution, or complete visual coverage. The best description is more restrained: Pornhub introduced a free set of BaDoinkVR promotional previews using 180-degree and 360-degree video, with support for several early VR platforms and paid full scenes available separately.
