The Rich, the Poor and the Trash is a 30-minute, English-language DW documentary from 2018, directed by Naomi Phillips and Thomas Hasel. It follows two people who earn money from discarded materials: Godwin Ochieng at the Dandora dumpsite near Nairobi and Pierre Simmons collecting cans on New York streets. Through their stories, the film examines how waste and consumption intersect with social inequality.
What the documentary follows
DW’s synopsis describes Ochieng as 28 at the time of the documentary. He searches garbage arriving from wealthier districts at Dandora for items he can sell. In New York, Simmons collects cans and sells them to recycling companies.
| Subject | Setting | What the film depicts |
|---|---|---|
| Godwin Ochieng | Dandora dumpsite near Nairobi | Searching mixed discarded goods for items to sell |
| Pierre Simmons | New York streets | Collecting cans to sell to recycling companies |
The two portraits show different ways discarded materials can become a source of income. They are examples presented by the film, not a study representing everyone in either place.
Waste and inequality in the film
DW frames garbage as a way to consider prosperity and social disparity, describing discarded goods as one person’s trash and another person’s lifeline. That is the documentary’s interpretation; its synopsis does not provide statistics that establish a universal relationship between waste and inequality.
