It is also ecologically fragile, faces mounting conservation pressures, and is currently covered by official advice against travel from Australia.
UNESCO inscribed the Socotra Archipelago as a natural World Heritage property in 2008. Its biodiversity is remarkable, but the islands are home to people and livelihoods as well as rare species—and should not be treated as an untouched tourist destination.

Where is Socotra?
UNESCO describes the archipelago as extending 250 km and comprising four islands and two rocky islets. It lies in the northwest Indian Ocean near the Gulf of Aden and appears as a prolongation of the Horn of Africa. “Socotra” often refers both to the main island and to the wider archipelago; here, the archipelago means the UNESCO-listed property.
What makes Socotra distinctive?
The archipelago is known for its unusual landscapes and exceptional endemism: many of its species occur nowhere else. UNESCO’s World Heritage property entry reports that 37% of Socotra’s 825 plant species are endemic, as are 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species. UNESCO also reports 253 reef-building coral species, 730 coastal fish species, and 300 crab, lobster, and shrimp species.
#1 Best Overall
UNESCO has called Socotra one of the world’s most biodiversity-rich and distinct islands. It is sometimes nicknamed the “Galápagos of the Indian Ocean,” a metaphor for its distinctive wildlife, not a claim that the ecosystems are literally equivalent.
Conservation and local communities
Socotra’s biodiversity does not mean its ecosystems are untouched. In its 2026 decision, the World Heritage Committee reported that the archipelago retains the exceptional biodiversity for which it was inscribed, while key terrestrial and marine ecosystems are deteriorating. It identified interacting pressures from development, invasive alien species, pollution, climate change, and unsustainable resource use, and said legal protection and management remain weak and insufficient.
Rank #2
UNESCO’s listing also identifies road development, overgrazing, overharvesting, potentially unsustainable tourism, and invasive species as threats. The Committee called for habitat restoration, better regulation of grazing, fuelwood collection, and fisheries, and sustainable local livelihoods that share the benefits of conservation and tourism equitably.
Residents and their culture are part of Socotra’s story. UNESCO describes a rich cultural heritage and the unique, endangered Soqotri language. Its 2022 publication description emphasizes the relationship between the islands’ nature and inhabitants, and discusses changes to traditional land and sea uses, climate change, and unsustainable resource use.

Is Socotra safe to visit?
Travel advice can change, but the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller advice, current 17 September 2026, says: “Do not travel to Yemen, including the island of Socotra, due to the security situation and political instability.” It cites risks including armed conflict, kidnapping, and terrorism, and warns that medical services may be difficult to access. Check current official advice for your nationality before making any plans.
Travel-route reports are not a substitute for official advice. A private operator reported a Jeddah–Socotra route in July 2026, but that information is volatile, operator-provided, and not independently corroborated in this research. Do not rely on it as confirmation that travel is available or safe; verify any route with relevant authorities and the carrier immediately before publication or travel.

UNESCO’s 2022 illustrated publication, Nature and people in the Socotra Archipelago, draws on scientific knowledge and stories from island inhabitants. It offers a way to learn more about the connection between Socotra’s natural environment and its communities.
